I think we’re going to learn a lot now that there’s a unibody aluminum phone model. It’s one thing when just the outer band of a phone is aluminum, but now with more surface area covering a third of the back it’s going to be way more noticeable. With all my other Pro Max’s, the only time I got chips in the metal band is when I dropped it or placed it on rough concrete. I don’t use screen protectors or cases on my phones, so if/when they get chipped or scratched it’s usually my fault, but these Pro’s look like they chip and scratch just from looking at them. We’ll see how it pans out.

This is the first year I didn’t get a phone on launch day because I’m hesitant to get the Pro Max and the Air. Figured I’d wait it out and see but with a 16 Pro Max, I don’t fully feel the need to upgrade just yet.
I have the 16 Pro already, was happg with it, maybe it’s just not me time to upgrade yet. Love the new front camera quality though

With all these iPhone replacements, how does Apple know whether the device was already defective when it was opened, or if the user has caused a dent?

Apple offers a 14 day no questions asked refund policy. You don't even need to say why you want to return a product unless you want to. Like it or not, a lot of people from each camp (received a defective phone to accidentally scratched after purchase) return a phone and get another one and Apple honors their policy.

No, you can not "compare the two. Aluminum versus raw Titanium." Alloys are used. Raw titanium is never used for anything.

Certainly I agree that the titanium ally used in iPhone 16 Pros looks much, much better than the cheapy aluminum alloy and anodizing of the iPhone 17 Pros.
Yes I CAN.

Comparing them is the whole idea of the change they have made in the iPhone body.

Am I putting them to the test at a molecular level? No.

I am comparing the durability of each, and that’s it.

Haha. I’m going to do a drop test, then return it… “no questions asked”. As long as I’m in the 14-day window you say? Awesome!

I went to a Best Buy yesterday to check out the 17 Pro Max and they were also scratched and the scratches would not come off when rubbing. Even with a case, the camera area is still exposed and yes, as someone that carries their phone in their pocket with other things this is a concern of mine. My 15 Pro Max doesn't have any scratches on it.

I know how I get about scratches on new devices and I don't even want to cause myself any unnecessary annoyance with the 17 pro max.

It is just disappointing to see people try to explain why this isn't an issue. Perhaps this wasn't the best design choice for Apple - but these devices being scratched on day one is VERY concerning.
I agree with you. My 15 PM doesn't have any scratches to it either and I haven't been super careful at all.

While I wait for my Cosmic Orange Pro to arrive. I cannot help but worry because I'm a clumsy person and the last time I had an aluminum phone, I nicked it on the first day!

Yes the black iPhone Airs are getting scratched up the worst as far as I could tell from the ones I looked at in the Apple Store. Seems to be quite strange based on the idea that they’re made out of titanium.
The titanium is PVD treated so the black Air will look awful if the finish is removed exposing the colour of the metal beneath.

I think the aluminium enclosure on the Pro’s is a step back from a perceived quality point of view and the test have shown it hasn’t improved the cooling massively anyway.

I fully expect Apple to stay with the new Pro design but modify the aluminium quality and anodising process to improve initial hardness.

Here in France, I had the same experience at my local Apple Store. The backs of the Pro (especially the blue) and Air (especially the black) models were badly damaged. Especially by the MagSafe rings. I haven't seen this in previous years. I bought the Pro Blue model, but I'm hesitant to return it for the regular Apple 17. Even with a case, it's difficult to protect the "platter."

I’ve been case free with the Titanium Pros, no issues. The 17 Pro I immediately put a case and screen protector on, and wham I get this 😆
Just want to say, you’re not alone.

I had my black 16 Pro for a year, caseless, and not so much as a scratch.

After one day, my 17 Pro has some very tiny chipping on the edge of the camera plateau.

The Pro models are going to wear so badly outside cases because anodising is ****.

Thinking very hard about taking my 17 Pro back and keeping the 16 Pro. The 17 Pros feel like such a step back in this regard.

Most people will never pay to have just the glass replaced. If you make an apple care claim, they don't replace just the back glass they replace the whole phone. Have you seen the repair to replace the back? They have to chip out all the pieces, bit by bit, prep and glue and all kinds of stuff. The only thing that a replaceable back does, is allows some more options for second hand refurbish shops.... This is a non issue for 95% of the market.
$29 with AppleCare+ on my 15 pro max.

Had the back glass changed last week and the phone looks brand new.
