So, I just ordered a MacBook Pro
1.83 GHz Core Duo
2x512MB 667MHz DDR2 RAM
100GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
256MB X1600 Graphics
(Update)Shipping: February 15

Feel free to post setups and shipping dates(when updated)
 
curious, why did you opt for the 7200rpm drive vs the 5400? Pure performance, or some other reason? I'm in that boat trying to make a decision right now, and that's really the only thing i'm debating.

I'm going to be doing a bunch of video and photo editing, so I need the extra speed. If you're not doing anything hardcore, go with the 5400
 
Funny, what happened to all those Windows fans who kept saying as soon as Apple introduced intel based Macs they were going to be proven right that Macs are overpriced compared to Dell. :) No such post yet, is there?

This is pretty comparable to the highend apple model, and $500 cheaper. Even more if you get a nice dell coupon off dealsea or slickdeals or something.
 
How much are RAM modules going to cost for this sucker? Third-party, meaning, not Apple. I looked on Newegg.com and the seemed only to have them for desktops.

EDIT: Just checked Crucial and found them - they already the MacBook as an option in their little search thingy. :)

I added a few things to the dell - a remote control, upped the HD to 100gb (from 80), a superdrive and a 9 cell battery and that brought the price up to $2242.

While we're on the subject though, there's another thing that he forgot: the dell comes with a 17" display (add another $150 to make it "extra bright"). The MacBook only comes with 15.4" display.

Also, we'll have to see about the software. I'm curious to see if someone puts OS X intel on a non mac computer. I'm curious to see how well it runs on that computer. If it runs fine, then you you have to change your wording a little: "software" becomes "legal software". Let's not forget that this does come with a legal copy of Windows XP though, which MacBook buyers have to pay for if they want it (legally speaking again).

I would still pick the Mac because it's a brand that I trust and I know my OS X is gonna run smooth and that the design of the computer is gonna be well thought out.
 
The dell machine, the only dual-core they have right now, costs $3200+ when spec'd with the dual-layer drive, dvd-burning software, corel photo album, the brighter screen, etc. That still leaves out the iSight, and does not take into effect that the inspiron's are chunky clunkers.

Better and cheaper. When the hell has that happened?:):):)

For once, it isn't that bad a deal to have Apple upgrade the RAM for you.

+ $100 for 2x512MB
+ $200 for 1x1GB
 
I just bought a MacBook Pro (well last night as soon as the store came up).

1.83Ghz
120Gb Hard drive
1Gb on a single SO-DIMM

I'll add another 1Gb as soon as I get it.

Shipping is estimated as Feb 7th (UK store).

I am going to be ordering one, but have decided to give it a week and see the benchmarks of the iMacs to help me decided which model to get.

Cant decide between 5400rpm & 7200rpm either.. Most of my heavy files for final cut/photoshop/painter will be on an external drive(before FW800, I guess now FW400)

Though the new iMac 2ghz represents great value too... Do I really need portability.. aghhhh :confused: :confused: :confused:
 
I'm returning my recent 15" PB purchase today and will wait until these are released, and perhaps about 2-3 weeks after they're relased and read reviews before I jump.
For now, I don't really need it; I still have my trusted iMac :)
 
Just whacked a deposit down for a 1.67ghz macbook pro. Hoping I did the right thing right now. God I hate buyers remourse :D

I doubt you will suffer it once you fire up the machine, the specs seem pretty damn good...plus the form factor has not changed which I think is great as I love it.

I myself will not be making the purchase (having purchased 7 months ago) untill around Xmas 06. I don't feel like the next step to purchase for me (having a great machine already) is untill further advances in GPU and 64bit processing which should close the gap between the performance desktops and laptops a little bit more.

DVI to S-Video PAL adaptor

I'll add another 1 GB from crucial as soon as I get it.

Once you configure it to have all the same specs as the Macbook it becomes significantly more expensive than the Apple. And there are still some things that can not be added to the Dell that Apple offers.

Well considering it is 17" and given that the old 17" Powerbook is around 25% more expensive than the 15" i think the Dell beats it in price.

I'm waiting for the reviews to come out before i get one. Although work is buying me a new laptop (Dell Latitude D820 with a Core duo) so i think i'll invest in an iMac instead.
