I just returned my 15" PB yesterday and will pocket the cash until the MacBooks ship and I hear some reviews about it.
Patiently waiting...
Or not?

Ordered a stock 1.67 MacBook Pro yesterday morning.

Quick question.....is it me, or does the MBP look like it has a charcoal coat to the casing now instead of the usual aluminum? It looks great!

I order my 1.83/100-7200/1gb 1 hour after Keynote!!;)
It'll be my very first mac!!:)

Due date: FEB/15/2006
:(

MacBook Pro

You scare me....I am in exactly the same boat, my first Mac with the EXACT system, same HD upgrade and all. Now only if someone would advise me about Aspyr releasing Sims 2 Universal Binary and whether I should return the games(sims2 and univ) that I bought with it .

Lol... you even ordered the Apple USB Modem too?

Anyways, we'll be alright. I just wish that I had enough money to buy a black 60 GB iPod along with my purchase, but unfortunately I do not.

I ordered a MacBook Pro with 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200RPM hard drive and a USB modem.

I also ordered a chocolate coloured incase sleeve(bag) and the light blue and white logitech mouse for portables.

I'm super excited and I plan for this to be my main computer for the next two to three years. I just hope it doesn't have to go in for repair too many times, this being a revision A and all.

At any rate I picked up the following

-PowerBook* 1.83Ghz / 100GB 5400RPM / 2GB RAM / 256 OMG GPU.
-1 spare battery
-Applecare
-.Mac for a year.

I was a little bit irked. I thought people who purchased systems got a discount on .Mac for $60something. :( I'm also planning on replacing the hard drive with a 160GB drive sometime next year just before Leopard ships so I can do a clean install.

Yeah, there is/was some problem with the website where you weren't being given the option of the $69 .Mac with the new iMacs or MacBook Pros, but you would with, say, a PowerMac. That's why I called and ordered my on the phone...the guy went and talked to someone and figured out how to get it for the discount. I'm excited about my new webpage coming!! :D

LOL, I am wondering the same thing about TS2. Thank God I'm not the only simmer on here... lol. :p

PS. It'll be my first Mac as well--I'm excited, to say the least :)

For once, it isn't that bad a deal to have Apple upgrade the RAM for you.

+ $100 for 2x512MB
+ $200 for 1x1GB

That's Crucial. MemoryToGo is 106, and still has a guarantee.

Comparing Dell and Apple

I always find this humorous.

You can get a Hyundai with leather seats and a V6 engine or you can get a BMW with leather seats and V6 engine. Both will get you from A to B, but you're going to pay alot more for the BMW. Why? Becuase 'better everything' for the most part.

I look at buying Apple product the same way.

If you want the fastest machine for the cheapest price, then Dell is probably your answer. But have fun, when you're entire media collection of movies, mp3s and family photos gets wiped out when the next big virus hits.

It is this kind of statement that never cease to amuse me.

Let's see, the last time I lost data to a virus on Windows is.. erm, never?

Don't blame Windows for:
1) Your own stupidity, if you can't stop running in Administrator, it is YOUR own fault. Nevermind it is the default. By default your seat belts are unbuckled when you start your car, does that mean you can use that as an excuse when a copper stop you over?

2) Your own ignorance, if Windows is truly so fragile like you put it, and your data is so oh precious, just download a anti virus software and firewall for.. FREE! Is it very hard? And by the way when your battery monitors starts gunking up or when the lines on your screen refuses to go away, what do you do? Download "Software Updates" from Apple! It is not like there is a difference, the hassle is still there.

3) People who doesn't learn to backup don't deserve data. 'nuff said. The hard drives in your mac are not made by pixie dust and can run forever, it is the same crap that powers the rest of the PC industry.

With the BMW example you are literally comparing Apples and oranges, the BMW has 50+ PPC processors in it responsible for controlling various aspects of the car, the MBP has erm the same LCD and erm the same processor (actually a LOUSIER one) and in fact looking back at the iMac G5s and the capacitor problems, hey, the SAME CHEAP SHODDY PARTS too! The difference is solely software. Plain and simple.

Just ordered my 1.83GHz model.

1.83GHz Core Duo
1 GB RAM (single DIMM)
100 GB, 7200 RPM hard drive
Estimated ship: February (will update when I find out more)

Why did I pick the single DIMM? So I can more easily upgrade later. While some Core Duo notebooks take advantage of Intel's 945 chipset's 'dual-channel' memory, I called Apple Tech Support, and was told that the MBP does *NOT* support dual-channel memory. So I chose a single DIMM to more easily upgrade later. (If they had confirmed dual-channel memory, I woudl have gone with the two 512s and saved $100.)

Why the 7200 RPM hard drive? Because I recently got a Centrino laptop for work (2.26GHz,) that came with a 4200 RPM drive, and upgrading that to 7200 RPM made a HUGE difference in perceived speed. While the stock 5400 RPM in the MBP would have been better than the 4200 in the PC, faster is better. (Which brings me to: Why doesn't Apple offer the faster 2.0 GHz or 2.13 GHz Core Duos, at least as options?)

I do have three gripes:
  1. No FireWire 800. (I don't have any FW800 devices now, but it would be nice future-proofing.)
  2. No dual-layer burning! (Really! Go check the specs. This one is a very odd thing to leave out. Plus the SuperDrive is half the speed of the SD DL in the PowerBooks.)
  3. No TV-out. (No native S-Video port, and it doesn't say anywhere in the tech specs that it supports TV-out through a dongle; like the iMac page says.)

Maybe the rumors of an even better notebook coming soon are true, and I should have waited... (But my 12", PowerBook G4 [see sig] is just feeling its age, especially compared to the new PeeCee work laptop.)

Don't like to feed the trolls but with regards to your point about taking the time to make sure your PC is safe, secure and stable - therein lies the difference. The apple solution is sold as being out of the box, "it just works" - i believe that steve used that term during the keynote. The vast majority of home users don't want to have to do extra things to keep their system working. Both systems have regular updates (which tend to be pretty seamless) but the apple doesn't require the installation of additional software.

Plus macs are aesthetically pleasing which matters a lot to plenty of people, you can disagree with this of course, but you are in the minority. As for restricting the use of their operating system (as mentioned in your 'clever' comment in your signature) they are entitled to do that and if you want it buy the system and if you don't, don't - it's called freewill, sadly yours doesn't seem to compel you to leave the forums.

So that they can offer them as speed bumps later on. The duo line will likely not see many additions at the top end so if apple were to start with the top of the line chips they would apparently have a stagnant product for a year - they did the same with the G4. The pentium M only saw one clock boost during its lifetime (could be completely wrong on this) and that was the addition of the 2.26 at the top end. The MBP will probably be up to the top end prior to the roll out of the merom line towards the end of the year.

Just a quicky, a lot of people are saying they had to opt for a single 1Gb Dimm.

At the UK store, when I placed my order it was not an option.

If you ordered the 1.83GHz Dual Core, 1Gb RAM was the minimum spec.

I ordered mine as soon as the store was back up (I have a Feb 7th ship date). At that time the default was 1Gb on a single SO-DIMM. It still is the default. 2x512Mb is currently showing as an option at £70 less.

Dell currently charges $375 to upgrade the hard drive to 7200RPM [about $100 more than the retail price of the drive, let alone the upgrade.

Ordered 1.67 MacBook Pro with 100 Gig 7200 HD Upgrade.

Left memory at 512, will go crucial for a 1 gig stick before it arrives.

Current Ship date of Feb. 7th.

Pentium M originally topped out at 1.7 GHz on a 400 MHz bus. The latest models go up to 2.26 GHz on a 533 MHz bus.

And, according to Intel's plan, the Core will be replaced by the chip codenamed 'Merom' in Q3 this year.

im probley going to order one as soon as i hear some reviews. i need to find out if the old(current) fcp and photoshop will work on them, as ive heard that they arnt supported now mac have made the switch to intel.
