Pioneer today became the first company to officially offer support for Apple's CarPlay vehicle integration feature, after announcing the addition of CarPlay to five of its 2014-NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.

"CarPlay enriches the iPhone experience in the vehicle by providing a safer way to access the iPhone features they want to use most while driving," said Ted Cardenas, vice president of marketing for the Car Electronics Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "With Pioneer's implementation, CarPlay can now be integrated into millions of vehicles already on the road."
As previously announced, CarPlay is available through a firmware update for the $1400 AVIC--8000NEX, the $1200 AVIC--7000NEX, the $900 AVIC--6000NEX, the $750 AVIC--5000NEX and the $700 AVH--4000NEX. CarPlay is also compatible with Pioneer's new $600 smartphone receiver, AppRadio 4.

First introduced in March, CarPlay utilizes the built-in dashboard display of an automobile to offer hands-free operation of the iPhone. With CarPlay, drivers are able to complete tasks like getting directions, making calls, and sending messages through Siri voice control.

Other companies that sell aftermarket in-dash systems also plan to offer support for CarPlay in the near future, including Alpine and Clarion. The first CarPlay enabled cars are expected to come in 2014 as well, with Apple partnering with a wide range of manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, GM, Honda, Mazda, Audi, and more.

CarPlay for compatible Pioneer NEX in-dash systems is enabled through a firmware update that is available at no cost. It requires an iPhone 5 or later along with iOS 7.1 or newer.

Ridiculously overpriced just because it's using Apple software.

I'll wait:
1. until these things get cheaper.
2. until I get that BMW 2002.
And you know what I'll do ;)

IDK about using Apples Maps yet. It still points me to wrong places. I switch to Google maps, and it shows how far off Apple Maps was.

It really depends on where you are. Where I'm at, Apple maps tends to be more accurate than Google maps. Google maps doesn't even have the correct street names in my neighborhood, where Apple maps even knows which houses have pools in their backyard.

FINALLY.

Been waiting on this!

this is what quality touch screen headunits normally cost... It cost this much before Apple even announced carplay, and you can (could) find them for hundreds less online.

Not really.. Pioneer headunits usually cost about this much.

Yeah, I have a problem with the price of these in general. So much money for such basic hardware. If you want a cheap unit, it'll work nearly as well, but it'll look like it's meant for a tricked out 80s Honda Civic.

I wish Apple gave certain badges or awards to people who make the most corrections. I've done at least 150 since they released it!

Still too expensive in my opinion, hopefully the carplay will come to their "low-end" head unit version.

What car model?

First thing that pops up in a potential buyer's head – what car models are supported by Pioneer, will it work in my car?

Anyone found any info on this?

Well Pioneer doesn't support any car models. You buy them and replace your current stereo with theirs. They support their hardware that you place into any car.

If your car can take a Double DIN headunit, this will work.

The UK didn't get the same models as the US, I have to wait for the SPH-DA120 to be released, and see how expensive it will be.

I'm not getting a car new enough to have it built in for a while so it makes sense.

they really should get cheaper. As with this carplay thing all it needs is a nice screen, bluetooth and thats it. doesnt need cd/dvd rom drive no navigation system no nothing as my iphone will do the rest.

I do not see the point of CarPlay on a receiver. Why can't just use a iPhone 6 plus, tell Siri I'm in the car and my phone goes into CarPlay mode. No need to shell out $400 to $800 bucks.

£349 according to Halfords who accidentally leaked the DA120 on their website last week and then took it down when I queried it - I posted a screen shot on twitter - pic.twitter.com/J2LcqqX8LY

If you join the BMW owners club, or one of the other related car owners club, you can get a 15% Halfords discount card - it costs about £16 a year to join one of the owners clubs, but you'd save £52 on one of these head units - I joined a couple of weeks ago just to get a discount on a new Pioneer Appradio HU - glad I held off purchasing. :)

Exactly.

Someone should make one that is simply an external monitor for your phone (for someone who doesn't need AM/FM radio, disc playback, etc)

I was watching some new car reviews on Youtube the other day... and there are cars that don't even have a CD player. Just a USB port and an AUX jack. Your phone is the brain.

Boy have times changed!
