Sigh, this is Pioneer's MO. Hey, you want this new feature? Buy a whole new car stereo system!

I bought an AppRadio 3 last summer and apparently its too old to support CarPlay? This is how Pioneer is, you buy it and hope they give you an update or two

Ridiculously overpriced just because it's using Apple software.

I'm far from an apologist when it comes to things being overpriced, but that's the nature of modern car audio. These NEX systems were around and priced as such long before CarPlay was a thing.

they really should get cheaper. As with this carplay thing all it needs is a nice screen, bluetooth and thats it. doesnt need cd/dvd rom drive no navigation system no nothing as my iphone will do the rest.

So you want AppRadio. Basically a touchscreen AM/FM radio without an iPhone.

As far as I am aware, none of the car audio receivers have done yearly software feature updates before (or at all). Frankly they don't make money doing it.

Can anyone confirm which specific models of AppRadio are getting this update?
Pioneers website won't load for me or I would check myself.

Just how bad is it?

Ridiculously overpriced just because it's using Apple software.

How ridiculously expensive? You could buy a used Core 2 Duo Mac Mini and a touch screen for less, install them in your car, connect them to the existing head unit, and still come out ahead if only break even.

However, you would have access to the full versions of software available while you drive down the road.

I dunno, Someone should have thought about that at Pioneer. I am guessing Pioneer believes heavily that their brand name is worth that much. To some consumers, it probably is. To me, I'd rather have quality computing power than a brand name.

One thing that raises my concern is lack of a traditional EQ with these systems. I mean are we stuck with "rock, treble booster, acoustic, etc.?"

that was slow.

Because of Apple, not because of Pioneer. Pioneer said back when iOS 7.1 and CarPlay were released in March that it was ready to go but they've been waiting all of this time for Apple to certify and allow them to release.

Really lame that they don't support the current AppRadio 3. Not sure if I'll upgrade or not.

They'd not included the AppRadio previously, at least those currently released which is the 3, 2, and 1.

Yeah because that is what everyone needs, a full mac mini in the car.
"Always on the go, no time to stop at a coffee shop and write that mid-term paper? Write it while you drive!"
On top of that, how many people would even begin to know how to install that themselves? Clearly Pioneer is offering an all in one solution that is basically Plug-n-Play and just about anyone can do in their garage/driveway.
Even when it comes to price, you fail to mention the cost of of still buying a screen to put in your dash.
How would you manage the power draw on your battery?
How about your intenet connection? going to hotspot from your phone?
How long is it going to take to boot up your computer every time you get in your car? what about shutting it down?
Seriously your idea is more than flawed...

The servers are backed up and connecting isn't easy.

I downloaded the download for the 4000NEX and the folder is titled "AVIC5000NEX"......

palm:face

Yup, seems to be the case. I have the 3 from this time last year and I'm not too happy to be left out even though the hardware itself is more than compatible.

Sure you CAN do that but the other 99.9% would much rather pay for something that works and be done with it than mess around with all of the time and headaches that what you described would involve. You can build a house and get just what you want but most choose to buy one that's already built and ready to move in.

Did anyone else install the 5000 file to their 4000Nex???

if i install this update after waiting 10 months and it bricks it i might kill myself.

Less than a week ago I contacted Pioneer about the availability of Airplay, and the response was basically "we don't know when it will be available."

Not Working

I do not see the point of CarPlay on a receiver. Why can't just use a iPhone 6 plus, tell Siri I'm in the car and my phone goes into CarPlay mode. No need to shell out $400 to $800 bucks.

That Siri command isn't working for me.

Pioneers site isn't loading for me. Thats always fun. I've been waiting for this since day one when I bought my head unit.

what's your authority on that? pioneer said in their orig announcement on FB that the appradio3 didn't have the hardware needed. why should I doubt them when they made it a firmware upgrade on other units they said did have the hardware? the AppRadio is their entry level unit so I don't doubt that they use the minimums for *today*.

PSA: technology evolves. Some old hardware can't be upgraded to use new software features. I'm still pissed at Jeep for making a new model with more horsepower and not upgrading mine. Waaaaa!

AppRadio 3 has a miserable resistive based technology touchscreen. It would be horrible.

The way I see it, CarPlay as a whole isn't very elegant solution at all. Wired connection is such an annoyance when it comes to a transportation. You constantly plug/unplug your phone as you get in and out of the car.

The only real advantage you get by using CarPlay is the text because cars with bluetooth connection can already do call/music WITHOUT the hassle of wires and Apple Maps is still "meh" for many places. I mean, even text is not much of advantage for many people including myself because SMS is quickly being (if not already been replaced) replaced by IM apps but CarPlay obviously doesn't support any third party IMs. (And not everyone I need to contact has iPhone and use iMessage.)

Apple should have made a dedicated hardware themselves with wifi connectivity(with and without screen), basically a dedicated stream client for iPhone to cast CarPlay if both devices are within range. For tighter integration with, offer automakers the option of embedding required hardware into them so that drivers can take advantage of built in buttons and knobs.

If nothing else, they should at least make this thing wireless if they really want to push it forward.
