Um, the iPod shuffle, maybe? Why does shuffle mean "no screen"?

The listing for the 1GB shuffle on the Apple Store indicates "expected availability mid-January," which indicates we'll be getting something at 1GB. I'm guessing the shuffle is getting a new, nano-ish form factor.

New lineup:

1 GB shuffle ($99)
2 GB shuffle ($149)
4 GB nano ($199)
8 GB nano ($249)
40 GB iPod ($299)
80 GB iPod ($349)
You must be on crack.

If Apple comes out with a iPod Shuffle with a screen, what are they going to rename it? ...The iPod "Non-Shuffle"?
Apple don't seem to be very worried about keeping the model names, "iPod mini" was an overnight icon and they dropped the brand cold. There is clearly no fear of considering stupid names at Apple, witness "iPod" itself, or "Vingle", "Genius Bar" or even "QuickTime" (that last one has had plenty of time for the sheer awfulness to wear off, but it still sounds more like an oven feature than a multimedia framework).

I've seen plenty of 1gig shuffles in various places around Toronto.

( and Nanos and regular iPods for that matter )

Apple need to add black.
( of course, certain people will think that is sooo unPC..)

I can see the Shuffle being discontinued or transformed. It just doesnt look the same as the newer iPods..

I can also see it becoming the new iPod remote for the Mini Media too :)

NO THEY DIDN'T.

DANG RIGHT!

You tell them... hopefully they will listen to you because people some how have it drilled in there minds that the consumer line will go first. I would love to see a transcript or document saying the consumer line will go first.

I remember the keynote.Jobs said something to the effect that the low-end would be first and the top end last. That doesnt mean Apple is somehow on some specific timeline..

In the Dev notes for the DTK Apple says the config of the DTK may or may not be similar to what ships.Meaning whatever they get finalized first would probably be first.

That all came from this story. The "sources familiar with the situation" were right about the switch announcement, so people simply assume that "low end first" must be right too.

So far, we have rumors for:

- New Super-Thin Intel iBooks in 13" and 15"
- New Media Center Intel Mac minis
- New Super-Thin Dual Core Intel Powerbooks with iSight in 13", 15", and 17"
- New iPod shuffles (smaller, black)
- Modestly bumped iPod nanos (3GB and 6GB?)
- "iPod Boombox" of some sort
- New AirPort with 802.11n, Video Streaming
- iLife 06
- iWork 06 with "Numbers"

Wow. Some keynote.

after talkign with some low-level people from apple corporate, while admitting they know almost as little as us, the one thing they were sure about is that they expect at least 10 updates of some sort.. so yah, doesn't sound too far off

Sorry to burst your bubble, however Apple has pissed off many iPod Generation buyers and they do not plan on stopping this trend just because they happen to have more iPod consumer this quarter than any other in history.

Many people here complained that they had a 1, 2, 3, 4,G iPod and why they could not get the latest software releases and features. The iPod is a device like any portable CD player that once had CD only, and then CD-R, then CD-RW, and mp3 support. Its a marketing ploy to increase sales. That is how the industry innovates and survives. ;) :)

Updating a lineup is always going to piss people off, but a mere .5 upgrade seems futile to me -- but thanks for missing the point.

I would argue that no one in the market to buy a shuffle, would be swayed by a .5gb capacity increase. No one is going to jump into the buyers market saying "well... 1GB wasn't enough... but now it's 1.5, I can't say no."

On the other hand, this capacity upgrade could piss off people who just bought a shuffle. More harm than gain, IMO.

Also, my bubble. Apple believes in the halo effect of the ipod. They've commented on it in quarterly reports and in keynotes.. so they also have to believe that its possible to negatively impact a buyer with the ipod. Releasing a new shuffle, this soon after christmas, might leave a bad taste (halo) in the mouths of a lot of potentional mac buyers.

I know they've done it before, that's not news... but here are two, reasonably sound arguments I think, for why they won't do this time.

I think Apple just needs to KISS...

Keep It Simple Stupid.

The original Shuffle design was pure simplicity, no extra bells or whistles. It just does one thing, but it does it well at a cheap price and very few parts to break and/or scratch.

I'd much rather have it without a screen to mess up or more extra buttons to press.

Make it smaller, increase the battery life, and up the capacity and I'll be first in line to buy one.

Geez, 10 seems like an awful lot, at least if they were referring specifically to MWSF - Jobs's Keynote is only so long! ;) 10 updates in the very near future I could see though - several at MWSF, and then the remainder in the following weeks - Apple has done this many times before, where major products have been announced throughout the rest of January and February following MWSF... Can't wait to see what happens!

Hardware limitations caused a fair amount of that, too. The iPods internal chips couldn't support a lot of the new stuff. I'd like to see bugfixes more than anything... the iPod Video firmware seems pretty slow and could use some bugfixing for when connected to the computer.

I'll order it online to get in front of you! I love my 512MB Shuffle but the battery life could get a boost (although I've never drained it) and sometimes I want more songs on there than I can fit... and smaller is just a size benefit, it is already REALLY damn small.

Trust me. At no time in the keynote did Jobs say anything about which machines will go first. The predictions that Apple will go consumer first are based on industry analysts and the timetable of chip releases from Intel.

It's a good solid theory but Apple has never said what's going to happen.

I can't trust you because I don't know you but after going over the keynote I will agree with you ;)

He said "by this time next year there will be Intel macs and we expect to complete the transition by 2007"

Media Access Control rocks my socks off.

My shuffle is cool too although it's starting to crack on the back near the USB connecter.

We Aussies trust everyone. Cause if someone ever broke that trust we'd beat seven colours of ***** out of them.

But yeah, nobody really knows what's going to happen. For all we know there could be new PowerMacs at this keynote. Not likely given the chips from Intel and the progress of developers to port pro apps to x86 but it's still possible in light of zero information from Apple.

10 days and 10 hours to go till iChristmas.

6.5 hours till 2006!!
