Relative to other Apple offerings. ;)

When it came out it was one of the cheapest flash memory players around for the capacity. 12 months of competition means it's no longer the cheapest but it's still a good price.

Hence why it is either being replaced, revamped or discontinued I would guess... ;)

My predictions for the iPod line by the end of MWSF:

$79 iPod shuffle (512 MB, White or Black)
$99 iPod shuffle (1 GB, White or Black)
$199 iPod nano (2 GB, White or Black)
$249 iPod nano (4 GB, White or Black)
$299 iPod (30 GB, White or Black)
$349 iPod (60 GB, White or Black)

The only thing that I see changing is the shuffle part...I believe everything else will stay the same, regardless of the shuffle update.

Trust me. At no time in the keynote did Jobs say anything about which machines will go first. The predictions that Apple will go consumer first are based on industry analysts and the timetable of chip releases from Intel.

It's a good solid theory but Apple has never said what's going to happen.

I went on a quest a few months back trying to correct this "consumer line first" theory that was always presented as fact. Every time I saw it in a thread I corrected it; it must have been at least a dozen times. Yet this admittedly good theory is still passed around as fact.

Good luck trying to stop it. :)

That's OK, next person to say it gets their Mac replaced with my old 633MHz Celeron with 256MB RAM running XP Pro on a 15GB HDD that's gathering dust at my folks' house.

It all makes sense 1gb of music is too much to listen to without a screen, most people buy a 512mb Shuffle for sport or as a second iPod, as its cheap and functional.

Shadow

I was talking to someone over the weekend who has a 3rd gen 20gb. He wanted an armband for the ipod, so that he could work out with it, run and lift.

I explained that the ipod has a harddrive and I'd be cautious about running with it. He dismissed the notion... "It has skip protection" he argued. Not going any further into why that doesn't matter, I said "Well.. good luck."

The arm band costs $30. A shuffle costs $100. For someone with a good job and who excercises... it doesn't make sense (to me) to not own a shuffle for working out.

Very good point Shadow! :)

I would respectfully disagree with you.

I use my Shuffle all the time when I ride the train. I just load whatever music the night before and play on shuffle mode. Works great and I don't have to fiddle with it.

And if I don't have time to load more music the following night, I can just keep shuffle playing what I have. Simple to me.

Also, the more space a Shuffle has, then the more space I can use for files and still have plenty of songs to listen to as I commute. That is why I see a 2GB version as being viable. Have 1GB of memory and 1GB of songs. Very handy.

The shuffle is the purest iPod that Apple makes. It is clean, worry-free and very easy to use. What's all this crazy talk about adding a screen to the shuffle? Might as well just buy a nano then. Adding a screen means having to add a full featured click wheel, otherwise you might as well pick up a crappy Dell DJ.

I see just a 1 GB shuffle that's at least 2/3 the existing size and, rounder and lighter.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

think more simply

ipod shuffle,
*smaller, narrower to fit well on ibooks with other things plugged in.
*color, all the rest are black and white, why not the shuffle.

keeping
* both sized they will not want to eat into the nano, its still too new and selling too well.
* both price ranges if they change this it will be $10 or less. about the drop in price of NAND

there is no need to drop the shuffle its the only usb, jump drive, that is apples, and with out a screen there is no end to the smallness of it.

apple loves simplicity at MW look for that when it comes to the shuffle.

Well I like the sounds of an OLED display. Being able to see what podcasts I am scrolling along would be very useful, especially if we get the played/not played marker in the display.

I also like the idea of quickly seeing how much room is left, getting contact info and calender alarms on something I carry everywhere.

I agreeon the form factor you suggest. I think Apple can do both well.

So far, we have rumors for:

- New Super-Thin Intel iBooks in 13" and 15"
- New Media Center Intel Mac minis
- New Super-Thin Dual Core Intel Powerbooks with iSight in 13", 15", and 17"
- New iPod shuffles (smaller, black)
- Modestly bumped iPod nanos (3GB and 6GB?)
- "iPod Boombox" of some sort
- New AirPort with 802.11n, Video Streaming
- iLife 06
- iWork 06 with "Numbers"

Wow. Some keynote.

sorry to tell ya, but let us prepare to be disappointed !!

You people are starting to **** me. Apple has always said consumer first to intel and then the pro line. Powerbooks will get bumped when the right processor comes around. Let's get back on topic and discuss the shuffle!

Actually, could you show us where Apple has said _anything_ at all? Don't confuse with what rumor pages write with what _Apple_ says.

The only thing that Apple has ever said is that there will be Macintosh computers with Intel processors in the hands of customers before June 2006.

We do NOT need smaller shuffles. Period. The thing is small enough as it is. The fact that people are washing their shuffles in their clothing is testament to this. What is needed is a shuffle with an LCD screen. 1GB holds enough music that a screen is pretty much warranted. 512MB...not so much.

Um, the iPod shuffle, maybe? Why does shuffle mean "no screen"?

The listing for the 1GB shuffle on the Apple Store indicates "expected availability mid-January," which indicates we'll be getting something at 1GB. I'm guessing the shuffle is getting a new, nano-ish form factor.

New lineup:

1 GB shuffle ($99)
2 GB shuffle ($149)
4 GB nano ($199)
8 GB nano ($249)
40 GB iPod ($299)
80 GB iPod ($349)

8 GB of Flash memory cost _real_ money. There is no way whatsoever that 4 GB more of Flash memory could be sold for $50 only more in Jan. 2006.

That's just mean! :D

Well, saying that SJ has said explicitly that the consumer lines are moving to Intel first is stupid.

I'd much rather be mean than stupid.

I say old chap! Don't you ever sleep ?...yes..I know Australia is down yonder;)

If there's any kind of mini media device at MWSF that shuffle is gonna have an IrDA in it.

Well, I just got home from work, it's now 2006 and it's still a billion bloody degrees and humid as all hell. Tomorrow we are expecting temps of 41°C in the city and higher out west so it's warming up for it now.

Trust me,if it were say, 15 degrees then I'd be asleep. But it's not, it's 2am and 30 degrees. These poor drunken kiddies are going to be waking up on the hottest day of the year with thumping hangovers and do I care? No. I laugh at them.

Cheap price?

Yes, cheap price. Don't forget that when the Shuffle arrived Apple undercut the market price points of comparable players. Apple however is known not lowering the price but will keep profit margins healthy.

Reason you see other players cheaper now, is that most other manufacturers are having loads of inventory laying around. Their products just don't sell. So, to minimize their loss they sell below cost to clear inventory.
A good example is Creative. Their profit plummeted under market presure in the MP3 player market.
So, yes, the Shuflle is still cheap. But because of popularity, Apple has no reason to clear inventory and lower the price to do this.

Happy New Years!

Looks like you see it one hour before I do.

It's a bit cooler up here in the Northern Hemisphere. I always get a chuckle out of the difference. I think next summer when it's hotter than hell here I will head to Austrailia for vacation and to cool off! ;)

Anyhow, best to you in 2006!

Hardware limitations caused a fair amount of that, too. The iPods internal chips couldn't support a lot of the new stuff. I'd like to see bugfixes more than anything... the iPod Video firmware seems pretty slow and could use some bugfixing for when connected to the computer.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt for certain hardware limitations such as picture and video support goes, however what about on the software side. You are telling me that Apple cannot give a bonus to its long time supporters a feature like World Clock, Pod Lock, etc..

Though I know Apples reasons as to why they will not offer it, hardware limitations is not one of them. ;) :)

Fix bugs on iPod line, we all agree with you on that one. :D
