After developer AgileBits released details on 1Password 4 in August, the company has now released the new version of its popular password managing software for the Mac. Specifically, 1Password has been completely redesigned for OS X and promises compatibility with the upcoming OS X Mavericks, along with features such as iCloud syncing for passwords in addition to Dropbox and Wi-Fi Sync access and multiple password vault support featuring AES-256 encryption. The update also includes rewritten browser extensions and new fields for additional categories such as loyalty programs.

Keeping you safe. 1Password has been protecting people for nearly a decade. 1Password 4 builds upon this rich history to bring you the best possible security with unmatched productivity.

Security made beautiful. 1Password 4 has been re-written from pixel to bit to give you the best possible experience wrapped in a gorgeous new UI.

Saving you time. 1Password makes it simple to use strong unique passwords. Being secure with 1Password is easier than being at risk using weak ones you have to remember and type manually.
1Password 4 also offers a new "Security Audit" section in the main sidebar, allowing users to easily which logins are currently weak passwords, as well as which passwords are used across multiple sites or have not been changed in a significant period of time.

Has anyone used both 1Password and Last Pass? Any preference?

I've used both. My STRONG preference is for 1Password. It's amazing, and an absolute must-have Mac app.

Now, if you need something more cross-platform and less expensive, Last Pass is decent.

Doesn't seem to be available yet for those of us who purchased earlier versions outside MAS.

I have family licenses for both Mac and Windows plus iOS and would love to be able to upgrade!

Their website says that they do have a special Upgrade price available, but it doesn't say what that price is. Maybe they didn't put it up yet since they noted they were having issues hosting the app on their site.

Oh well... I can wait. Version 4 looks like a worthy upgrade. :)

Is this a free upgrade for those who already purchased? I have the Mac, Windows, and iOS Version, I really hope I don't have to pay (again) to upgrade each one!

With the advent of Mavericks from apple some (a lot?) of the functionality is built into OSX so they need to add features to further differentiate their product imo

The main feature for me that will keep me on 1Password is the availability of a Windows client. I need to be able to access my passwords from my Windows boxes/partitions too! Apple's support for Windows is diminishing, no more Safari, etc...

In my experience and as a user since beta, I have had to pay for every major update (1, 2, 3, etc).

I definitely had to pay for the 3->4 upgrade on iOS and the 2->3 upgrade on OS X.

However it seems that they are cutting MAS users some slack. Maybe because version 4 was already announced by the time 3 hit MAS.

I would think Apple has big plans for the fingerprint scanner and the password manager coming with Mavericks+iOS7. I've got 1Password, but would rather have it built-in to my iDevice than having to do everything in the app.

I like having multiple URL's per login with this new version. So if for instance a banking site redirects to a different URL for logins 1Password now handles it seamlessly.

I know only the MAS version will do iCloud syncing, but does (will?) the non-MAS version have any features that the MAS version does not have?

Just fired up the Mac App Store and the free upgrade to 4.0 was there. Just clicked Update and my 3.9.6 was upgraded in a few seconds :)

Looks right to me. It would be nice to maybe be cut some slack since I paid for the iOS and OS X apps faithfully, as many users have.

If I buy an upgrade from their site do I still get iCloud syncing or do I need to shell out the full price on MAS for this feature?

edit: From their FAQ: "To use iCloud syncing you should [read: need to] purchase on the Mac App Store."

I have a PS3 and other devices that don't support 1Password. How are you 1Password users managing the non-supported devices, for example when buying stuff from PSN or Xbox stores? Passwords have become a pain in the ass lately so I'm really interested in starting to use 1Password.

I have three types of passwords.

  1. Passwords you can remember - For me, these are only my Mac, iPhone 5S (now complex since I have Touch ID), iCloud/iTS (need to know this in case I need Find My iPhone), and 1Password.

  2. Passwords you can't possible remember - These are the bulk of my passwords; mostly websites, with long, unique, complex strings of characters. (Honestly, more concerned about someone hacking their servers and being able to retrieve the passwords in plain text than I am of people internally getting access.)

  3. Passwords you can't remember but can easily read off or remember long chunks of for a short period - I have very few of these but they would be something that you would bring up on your device that holds 1Password accounts so you can input them into another device manually.

For me, the PS3/Xbox stores would fall into the latter category.

I use it mostly on OSX so the cross platform feature of this is not a major selling point. I do like that this is more robust then Mavericks. I keep my bank, credit card and serial number information in 1Password. I don't see a reason why I would avoid upgrading but I'll wait until I get home and look into this more.

Luckily Microsoft is a very wise company, and have solved this problem for you by having a 16 character limit on Microsoft account passwords. :)

It should be interesting to see if 1Password continues to thrive with the introduction of similar features in OS X Maverick. While the built-in functionality doesn't offer all the same features, it is built into the OS and costs nothing. It also covers much more than just passwords within the browser and has system-level integration.
