I think I'm going to spend the extra $15 an buy the full version on the app store. That way when version 5 comes out I'll get that one for free :D

You'd only get version 5 free if Agilebits doesn't decide to make it a separate app the way a lot of developers have done.

I've used both. My STRONG preference is for 1Password. It's amazing, and an absolute must-have Mac app.

Now, if you need something more cross-platform and less expensive, Last Pass is decent.

Thanks for the kind words! We hope you enjoy 1Password 4 as much as we have enjoyed making it!

Doesn't seem to be available yet for those of us who purchased earlier versions outside MAS.

I have family licenses for both Mac and Windows plus iOS and would love to be able to upgrade!

B

We have a few things to clean up for the website. We ran into a few issues trying to roll the site out last night so it was pushed to this morning so we could get a little sleep, it's going to be a very busy day :) I do apologize for the trouble though. We'll get the website version up as soon as we can.

Interesting that it's out on the App Store before it's out on the Agilebits website.

See above, it'll be coming :) Our developers are on it

Their website says that they do have a special Upgrade price available, but it doesn't say what that price is. :confused: Maybe they didn't put it up yet since they noted they were having issues hosting the app on their site.

Oh well... I can wait. Version 4 looks like a worthy upgrade. :)

Thanks for being willing to wait! We'll get the website store updated as soon as we can. We wanted to release the website version the same time we clicked the button for MAS release, but ran into a couple things that held back the website, and the MAS updated faster than we expected :)

Is this a free upgrade for those who already purchased? I have the Mac, Windows, and iOS Version, I really hope I don't have to pay (again) to upgrade each one!

All users who purchased from the Mac App Store get a free upgrade. We promised those users a free upgrade when we released on the Mac App Store.

All users who purchased from our website in 2013 will get a free upgrade. If you're on the cusp let us know and we'll work something out.

All users who purchased from our website before 2013 will get special upgrade pricing. It'll be up on the website as soon as we get it deployed.

The main feature for me that will keep me on 1Password is the availability of a Windows client. I need to be able to access my passwords from my Windows boxes/partitions too! Apple's support for Windows is diminishing, no more Safari, etc...

B

We have a big update to our Windows version coming too! Hopefully we'll have more to announce there in the coming months. Our Windows developer is anxious to see it in user's hands!

In my experience and as a user since beta, I have had to pay for every major update (1, 2, 3, etc).

Version 1 users got 2 for free. Version 1 and 2 users got special pricing on version 3.

We've only charged for 3 upgrades in our history:

* 1Password 2 for Mac -> 1Password 3 for Mac
* 1Password 3 for iOS -> 1Password 4 for iOS
* 1Password 3 for Mac -> 1Password 4 for Mac

In order :) All previous users have gotten discounted pricing though.

I definitely had to pay for the 3->4 upgrade on iOS and the 2->3 upgrade on OS X.

However it seems that they are cutting MAS users some slack. Maybe because version 4 was already announced by the time 3 hit MAS.

B

Yup. That's exactly it. We promised it, we're delivering on that promise. Please enjoy 1Password 4!

I like having multiple URL's per login with this new version. So if for instance a banking site redirects to a different URL for logins 1Password now handles it seamlessly.

Great to hear you are enjoying this feature! I know there were a lot of requests for this in the past, so I hope that a lot of our users are happy for this feature :)

This looks like a good upgrade for an already great app.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I've posted this to our company chat room so the rest of the team can see. :) Hope you don't mind!

I know only the MAS version will do iCloud syncing, but does (will?) the non-MAS version have any features that the MAS version does not have?

At this time, the only feature that the MAS version has over the website is iCloud syncing. I pushed hard for feature parity in this release because I wanted to avoid as much confusion as possible. We'll do everything we can to keep them in line and I'll fight hard for it :)

Just fired up the Mac App Store and the free upgrade to 4.0 was there. Just clicked Update and my 3.9.6 was upgraded in a few seconds :)

Boom! :) Hope you enjoy it!

If I buy an upgrade from their site do I still get iCloud syncing or do I need to shell out the full price on MAS for this feature?

edit: From their FAQ: "To use iCloud syncing you should [read: need to] purchase on the Mac App Store."

Apple doesn't allow iCloud syncing with non-MAS apps. We wish we could include it though.

I have a PS3 and other devices that don't support 1Password. How are you 1Password users managing the non-supported devices, for example when buying stuff from PSN or Xbox stores? Passwords have become a pain in the ass lately so I'm really interested in starting to use 1Password.

I use diceware passwords for these types of things. There is some mention of it here: http://blog.agilebits.com/2011/06/21/toward-better-master-passwords/

They're long, strong and easier to type

Wow, really? I'm not seeing jack.

Anyone else having luck with the 'free upgrade' as can be seen.

Our website hasn't been updated yet. We've run into a few technical challenges, we'll get it updated as soon as we can. Sorry about that!

I'm contemplating on getting 1Password for my Mac and iPhone, but what I want to know is can I copy a password from the 1Password app on iOS and paste it into another app? I do my banking through my bank's iOS app instead of mobile web, and I have to sign in with the password every time I need to use it. If my bank password is insanely long and can in no way remember it, I would have to rely on copy-paste.

If that won't work, than what is a good workaround that people here do?

I think I'm going to spend the extra $15 an buy the full version on the app store. That way when version 5 comes out I'll get that one for free :D

I think they will then release a brand new app when version 5 gets out because they won't let the 3.x users have a second free upgrade.

Copy and paste will work, so long as the bank app doesn't prevent pasting into the password field. You can test it by simply copying some text from another app and trying to paste in. If it works, you can definitely copy from 1Password into the bank app.

To copy from the app, just tap the password, a bubble will pop up that says "Copy" (also Reveal, if you ever want to just view the password)

I think they will then release a brand new app when version 5 gets out because they won't let the 3.x users have a second free upgrade.

We just released version 4 today and you guys are talking about 5? :) I love the enthusiasm!

I think we're too far away from version 5 to even discuss pricing or upgrades for version 5. So, don't base any purchase decisions today on pricing or upgrades for version 5. You should decide entirely for 1Password 4, as that is what is available today, at this moment and something we can promise.

Luckily Microsoft is a very wise company, and have solved this problem for you by having a 16 character limit on Microsoft account passwords. :)

That's so very kind of them.

It should be interesting to see if 1Password continues to thrive with the introduction of similar features in OS X Maverick. While the built-in functionality doesn't offer all the same features, it is built into the OS and costs nothing. It also covers much more than just passwords within the browser and has system-level integration.

I don't think AgileBits has anything to worry about. It's possible it could help 1Password's adoption.

Apple's iCloud Keychain is great and hopefully will get the masses that still use the password for everything to start using more complex and unique strings but for those using 1Password already I simply don't think it's a viable option.

There is no way to edit, delete, or even view the passwords and CC numbers you have on file. I think to think that 1Password users not only appreciate that aspect of the app but like the granule control and ability to search for items within the app.

Until these things are adequately addressed iCloud Keychain simply a good thing to have if you don't have 1Password.

PS: For those with an iPhone 5S (or another device with Touch ID come next month?) I recommend using a complex passcode over a PIN since you won't need to input it very often.

I would think Apple has big plans for the fingerprint scanner and the password manager coming with Mavericks+iOS7. I've got 1Password, but would rather have it built-in to my iDevice than having to do everything in the app.

1Password does a lot more than what Apple offers in Mavericks and iOS

You'd only get version 5 free if Agilebits doesn't decide to make it a separate app the way a lot of developers have done.

Apple needs to incorporate versioning into the MAS.

I don't want to see 1Password 3, 1Password 4, 1Password 5, 1Password 6, 1Password 7, LastPass 1, LastPass 2, LastPass 3, SecureWallet 1, SecureWallet 2, SecureWallet 3, SecureWallet 4 when I search for password tools

I wonder if 1 Password will eventually work with the fingerprint technology, where the print is the one password for everything, not just Apple stuff. Of course if all Apple passwords are replaced by the button, I am buying into that immediately to start with. I loath the many and overly complex Apple passwords.

We're certainly interested in looking into it more if Apple provides an SDK. At this time they don't, so even if we wanted to we couldn't do it. Right now it is strictly limited to Apple use and no third party developers can access the fingerprint scanner.

I thought you guys usually do a 50% off promotion when launching things like this, only 20% off in the UK app store.

I am one of the unfortunate ones that purchased 1password 3 direct from you so won't get the free upgrade to 4, charging nearly full price for something many users are getting free is a bit of a kick in the teeth imo.

I love 1P and am a long time user. I have 1P 4 for IOS and MAC and just need wifi sync. When will the app be updated?

WI-FI sync is back! That's what it says, let me re-read that a bit. Anyone who has it, use wifi sync (like in v3)?

Glad to see the upgrade made it to the app store--upgrade was seamless and new version is very similar to the IOS version. Just be sure to use your IOS password if you had a different one on your Mac--data is imported from iCloud. (although I think there is another option to get data elsewhere if necessary--iCloud data was fine for me)

We'll be updating our website with discounts for existing website purchasers soon. We are working hard at getting it up... we're kinda of breaking the trend it seems and have a Mac App Store version first... not planned that way but that's the way it turned out :) Give it a day or so and you'll be set. Hopefully we'll get it up today.

I love 1P and am a long time user. I have 1P 4 for IOS and MAC and just need wifi sync. When will the app be updated?

We don't have a time frame for the iOS app getting wifi sync yet. We're still working our way through the hundreds (and thousands by the end of the day) of emails and questions from our users. We'll get the iOS app updated as soon as we can. Wifi sync is in beta, so it's just a lot of testing we have to do and squashing any bugs found along the way. Beta testers report it working very well though.

WI-FI sync is back! That's what it says, let me re-read that a bit. Anyone who has it, use wifi sync (like in v3)?

Wifi syncing only works like this:

1Password 3 for Mac -> 1Password 3 for iOS
1Password 4 for Mac -> 1Password 4 for iOS

You can't go from version 3 to version 4, or vice versa. Completely new wifi syncing code, and it's not backwards compatible.

It's back but not for the IOS app.......

We'll get it out as soon as we can. As mentioned above, it's in beta so our users are using it and it's there. We just have a lot of testing to do and a few more things we want to add and we'll be able to get it in your hands. No time frames, but we'll get it out as quickly as we can.

Won't iCloud keychain render this obsolete?

No, I am a Mac user and have a *gasp* Android phone (which I love, btw). I use 1Password and Dropbox to keep everything synced between multiple Macs and my phone. I don't use iCloud for anything, and want to keep it that way.

I figured this is why they just came out witht e upgade NOW. They need that last big bit of cash before their income tanks

So, do I need the Safari extension now that there is the menubar utility? Am I missing something?

Yes. The Mini app is basically always running, and you can reference information in it. However, if you want to fill into a web browser, you do need the extension. It's the only way we can interact with the web browser to find forms to fill, and to get data to save.

So, yes, you need the extension.

@Kyle - you kinda answered my question back-to-front ... I was wondering if the website version will have any functionality that the MAS version doesn't have (since this is often the case) ..

At the moment, no major differences. Different file paths (sandboxing, different bundle ids, etc). iCloud is only officially supported on the Mac App Store version.

As for the future? That's hard to tell. So far we've found ways to make all of the features work across both. That's not to say we don't find a really awesome one that can't be done on the Mac App Store version, but as of now, none of those exist. I basically can't answer your question, I wish I could though. It's just not something we can predict.

I hope that helps a little, but I understand if it's not what you wanted to hear. If you have a specific concern let me know either here or via private message and we can go through it.
