Hey Kyle.
It looks a great update, I'm liking it so far, and the anchor function is very useful.

My quick question is; is there any benefit to using icloud for syncing over dropbox? There is no extra (iOS or OSX) integration is there?

I am just wondering if I should bother switching.

Thanks!

At the moment, Dropbox syncing uses our "AgileKeychain" format and iCloud uses our "Cloud Keychain" format. Note that "Cloud Keychain" does not mean "iCloud." We can use the Cloud Keychain in Dropbox, but for cross platform reasons we'll be rolling out Cloud Keychain on Dropbox once we have iOS updated to support it fully there as well.

Cloud Keychain has support for things like Multiple Vaults (though not in use yet). Also it's 256 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit of AgileKeychain (128 bit is more than enough, see here: http://blog.agilebits.com/2013/03/09/guess-why-were-moving-to-256-bit-aes-keys/)

Dropbox is also cross platform (Windows, Android, Windows Phone). iCloud is only iOS and Mac.

The choice is yours of course, but it's a personal preference I think more than anything. Eventually the data format will change in Dropbox and they'll be completely even.

The upgrade prices for Windows, Mac + Windows, Mac are the same and don't depend on the license being upgraded from. An example - a single user license of one of the platform products gets the same upgrade pricing for family licenses as what a family license holder gets.

I understand this could get a bit complex, but treating family license holders on par with single user license holders does not seem fair. Some may argue that single license holders pay more on a per person basis, but still, there are no "separate upgrade prices" on the web store - there is only one set of upgrade prices for all web store customers.

Here's hoping that the OS X Mavericks release will bring larger upgrade discounts for 1Password and several other apps. I plan to wait it out for a while.

We provide a flat percentage for previous purchasers of any product of ours. Single and Family are treated the same because it's not a discount based on how much you paid in the past, it's a "you've already purchased from us, here's a discount for being a loyal customer" type of discount. I think we prefer the equality end of things.

The other side of the coin would be that family licenses would get the same discount as they do now, but single licenses would get less... Not so sure all of those single license holders would be happy though. :)

I don't make these decisions but we offer a pretty hefty discount on the family licenses already because we realize users want to have those licenses for their family and it's often critical in getting the family to use the application too. Five licenses would be $250 on their own, we offer it for $70 (normally) under the family pack.

I don't like how the 'edit pass' within safari was removed. Now within safari if you click edit, it will load up the main 1pass app and you have to search for your login

WI-FI sync is back! That's what it says, let me re-read that a bit. Anyone who has it, use wifi sync (like in v3)?

It's back but not for the IOS app.......

... which effectively means it is not back, as there is nothing to sync 1P v4 (OS X) with...

We don't have a time frame for the iOS app getting wifi sync yet. We're still working our way through the hundreds (and thousands by the end of the day) of emails and questions from our users. We'll get the iOS app updated as soon as we can. Wifi sync is in beta, so it's just a lot of testing we have to do and squashing any bugs found along the way. Beta testers report it working very well though.

I've mentioned this on the Agile forum, but I really think this is bad of you :(

I love 1Password, starting on Windows & iOS and moving to OS X and iOS last year.

... but I do not want to sync my keychain via the cloud, whether it is iCloud or Dropbox.

When 1P v 4 was released for iOS, you removed WiFi sync.

After many people moaned, you released the USB sync tool, so that we could still sync locally without using the cloud.

And now you have released 1P v4 for OS X, and brought back WiFi sync... yet not bothered to get the iOS version updated at the same time.

Now, as annoying as that is, at least there's still USB sync? Oh... nope, because that doesn't work with 1P v4 (OS X).

Great :(

1P v4 (iOS) works with USB sync, but 1P v4 (OS X) does not.

Do you not think it may have been better to ensure that one or both of those methods worked on both platforms before releasing the new version for OS X?

Can't upgrade to V4 without upgrading to Mtn Lion

I was planning on skipping Mountain Lion and going straight to Mavericks (what's the point of installing Mountain Lion now, when it will be superseded shortly).

However, I have found that I can't get my 1Password version 4 upgrade without going to Mountain Lion first.

Any comments about 1Password compatibility with Mavericks? Assuming that Mavericks gets released in the next couple of weeks, will I be able to get my upgrade? Or am I better off going to Mountain Lion now?

Hello Kyle,

I sent an email to support@agilebits.com on 10/4 asking some questions, and I haven't received a response yet..

I'll post them here, and I hope you will be able to answer them for me.

Hi,

1) I downloaded a trial of 1Password 4, and I don't see any facilities for importing data from other applications like Splash ID. Can you tell me if this works, and how to do it?

1b) Also, when I attempted to import data from Splash ID, using 1Password 3, my data was copied into the wrong fields in 1Password. Any instruction on how to keep my formatting in 1Password would be appreciated. I wind up with Secure Notes for most of my entries, and I have a fair amount of entries. Manually changing from Secure Notes to the proper category, retyping all of them, and entering the correct data into corresponding fields, in 1Password would be too time consuming. Data import is critical for me.

2) Is Dropbox synching supported in the version for sale in the Apple App Store, or is it only iCloud synching?

Thank You

Argh! I'm still running 10.7 on one of my Macs that needs 1Password 4, which requires 10.8. (The iMac stuck on 10.6 gets very limited use these days).

I'm not sure what we plan to do here, we certainly want to improve the mini app, but I am not sure whether this feature is coming back or what. I'll certainly pass your request along to the developers though.

We've submitted the update that includes wifi sync to Apple. Assuming approval is granted, the update should be available as soon as we can click the button to make it available.

Our developers worked on 1Password 4 while using the Mavericks developer previews. As far as I know, there are no known incompatibilities.

As for the stability of Mavericks, I can't comment on that. My usage has mostly been in a VMWare image since I rely on my computer operating 100% every day of the week. I was planning to get the GM installed, but it arrived too close to release and so it has been pushed back on my schedule.

Hey there! If you can PM me the email address you used to send the message I'd love to close the ticket out so we aren't duplicating efforts here.

1) There is no import from SplashID at this time. We're still working on import functionality and that will arrive in a future update, not sure which though as plans change depending on the needs of the users.

1b) SplashID is a real pain to import from. I suggest waiting until we support SplashID import in 1Password 4, it will likely be better than it was in 1Password 3.

2) Dropbox syncing is available on all of our supported platforms. Mac, iOS, Windows, Android and Windows Phone.

An alternative to the Import option, and the one I tended to prefer when I switched from another piece of software around 1Password 2 time frame, was to manually put my data into 1Password. You may roll your eyes at me for this, but hear me out.

Many of these applications work in different ways. Some store information that isn't supported by other applications. Every application organizes their data differently and has their own methodology for how it's supposed to work.

Importing may not work 100%, even in the best of scenarios. My suggestion is to manually add each item from SplashID to 1Password. This is actually much easier than you may expect. Once you have 1Password 4 setup and the extension installed in your browser, all you have to do is type in your username and password from SplashID into the site. We'll ask to Save. Done.

I did this for a week or so as I needed to. So, on day one I'd visit my most often used sites and each time adding the information to 1Password. By the end of Day 1, I had my most used data in 1Password. Over the course of the next week I had closer to 70% of it in there, the only remaining stuff was expired, closed or little used information. At this point I just took the hour to manually copy relevant information over and tidied things up.

This also allowed me to 1) Put data into folders and 2) Create Tags for each item type so I could easily setup Smart Folders for my most frequently used data. It also let me verify every single site and the passwords. A few of those sites needed password resets and I may not have realized until I had gone through and did this.

Like I said, you may roll your eyes at me, but for me, this process was _way_ better than an import because I learned how 1Password worked, what I could do to improve my organization and I discovered more about my passwords and how bad they were in many cases.

I hope that helps!

Will do! I'm curious as to why I still haven't received an automated email stating that someone would get to me soon - I'm reasonable, and I realize that the team my be overwhelmed. Is there any way you can look into this for me? Not critical, but if I'm going to invest in a product, I like to know that support is responsive.

I have found that importing from any password manager is always a crap-shoot, so I hear you.

I was concerned because I know how tight Apple is with their store, and I was hoping that they didn't make you remove the Dropbox functionality in order to push their iCloud syncing. Which brings me to another question: Which would you consider more secure, Dropbox or iCloud? I know what Dropbox publishes about their data encryption, and it sounds pretty good. I can find no information on Apple's handling of data in their cloud - either during transport or at rest. In fact, I often get requests )via Little Snitch) from various iCloud services to transmit data over unsecured ports.

Not rolling my eyes as I have had multiple failures importing data from one password program to another. None of them worked properly. I know that manual transfer is ultimately the way to go, but with 450 plus entires, manual transfer is something I'm not sure I currently have time for.

Not sure if I'm going to use the browser extension. I am looking for security over convenience, and I honestly am not sure if I trust the browser extensions. Any thoughts on this would be a big help.

I am going to be using 1Password to store passwords that should never be entered on a website. Since I am not familiar with the workings of 1Password yet hopefully you can tell me if 1Password is suited for this type of use? If so, what section would I put these entries into? Would I be better off creating two vaults?

I hope that helps!

Yes! You have helped, and I am looking forward to your answers to my new questions.

EDIT: I notice that 1Password 4 asks to connect to the internet several times. What are these request for? If I deny all of them, will I still get full functionality from 1Password 4?

Call me dense, but I'm confused about 1Password.
I create the main database on my Macbook Pro. Easy enough.
But, if I need my passwords on my work computer, iphone, ipad, wifes macbook, etc do I need to buy 1Password and load it on all the devices? Does the ios app need to be purchased for each device? With two iphones, two ipads, two laptops and two desktops (one at work), this might get real expensive.
Obviously the idea is to generate difficult passwords, so at work I would never know my Amazon password for instance.

We didn't turn automated replies on until we really needed to. So, some users may not have gotten one.

There are plenty of applications that offer Dropbox syncing on the App Stores. If they require removing of Dropbox from our app, it would mean removing it from all other applications. This would cause a lot bigger issue than just us. I don't have any details about iCloud's security. In the end, it doesn't really matter with regard to 1Password because our data is encrypted before it ever heads to iCloud or Dropbox. So, even if their system is compromised in any way, they'd have to get through our encryption separately. A break in iCloud or Dropbox would only matter for unencrypted data stored there by other applications and Apple.

That's what I said too, but it meant around 30 the first day, and then over the course of the next week I ended up moving the rest slowly as needed. The first day is the worst, each day after gets easier.

The browser extensions are more secure than copying and pasting your data.

1) We securely move the data from app to extension
2) Copying and pasting can be compromised by any keyboard logger or any other app that monitors the clipboard (clipboard history managers, etc)
3) We have anti-phishing methods in place allowing us to determine if the site is not the site you expect. Doing it by hand requires you do all of this work by hand.

You're of course free to not use the extensions, but you'd be missing out on the biggest reasons for using 1Password I think.

I am going to be using 1Password to store passwords that should never be entered on a website. Depends on the type of data it is. Passwords category or Accounts specific to non-browser logins would be fine.

We check for new versions (if it's the website version). If you have rich icons enabled, those icons are requested from our image server. These would all be normal.

You can disable rich icons, but you won't have icons for each site available. Checking for updates is pretty valuable, I wouldn't block that.

Our licensing is based on a per user, per platform model.

If you are the only user, a single Mac license is good on any number of personal Macs you use. Each user needs their own license.

If you have a Mac and PC, you can get the bundle pack on our website that gives you a single Mac and single Windows license. (again, per user, not per computer).

iOS purchases are tied to your AppleID. So, if all of your iOS devices use the same AppleID for the App Store, then one purchase works on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Hope that helps :)

I need to start using a password manager, but it would be really cool if the password managers could integrate with some sites to have the ability to dynamically change your passwords for security.

Question about 1password for Windows and syncing to 1password iPhone/iPad using iTunes:

These 1Password help pages (http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/Sync/iTunes-File-Sharing/itfs-getting-started.html, http://learn.agilebits.com/1Passwor...le-Sharing/itfs-send-data-file-to-itunes.html, http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/Sync/iTunes-File-Sharing/itfs-faqs.html) say that "restoring" 1Password data (which I assume is AgileBits terminology for copying the 1password keychain data to the iOS device for use by iOS 1password) through iTunes file sharing is not available for 1Password for Windows. The stated reason is that "iTunes does not permit folders for restoring" and "iTunes on Windows does not allow you to drag data folders into the Documents folder."

But isn't the keychain data to be copied to iPhone/iPad just a single file (the .agilekeychain file), as opposed to a folder? We know that using Windows iTunes File Sharing to copy files over to the iOS device. So why can't that be done with the .agilekeychain file? What's this business about copying a folder of keychain data from the computer to the iOS device?

An explanation from the Agilebits personnel who read these forums is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
