I haven't really tried 1Password but am pretty much convinced from reading around so will get it but I have a question which seems to be answered but I want to doublecheck
Say I have 2 laptops (work PC and personal Mac) and I regularly use them to access the same site which requires a password (let's take MAcRumours as an example). Does one license of 1Password work in this case? I guess this means storing the passwords in the cloud (?) somehow?
thanks!
1Password is licensed on a Per User, Per Platform model. So if you are the only user then one license can be installed on two or three or four computers that you personally use.
Each user will need their own license. So your boss will need his/her own license and your significant other too.
But if you are the only user, install it on all of your Macs at home and work. I have three Macs. Each of them uses the same license key and that is perfectly valid.
Licenses are not tied to data. 1Password is not a "cloud" system. We do not store your passwords on our servers. It is stored on your computer or your Dropbox if you opt to do so. This means backing up is your responsibility.
You could have a work data file and a personal data file. I do this but there are some gotchas. First, only one data file per "user account" on your Mac. So, I have a user "kyle" for my personal stuff, since I work from home I also have a "agilebits" account on my computer for doing work.
The personal account has a personal Dropbox and the data file is on that account.
The work account has a work Dropbox and that data file is on that work account.
I use fast user switching to go between them regularly.
Does that clarify things?
Understood but it seemed wrong to make decide that its not worth buying it because the purchase price was higher then what you paid for the operating system and I think that's the wrong approach.
Whether you find the product's functions worth the price is up to you.
Yes it does and it has convinced me - I can work with that. Thanks
Keep in mind what AGKyle said "1Password is licensed on a Per User, Per Platform model." It sounded like you are using both a Mac and a PC, so would cost more than the standard $50 for a Mac license. I believe AGKyle mentioned earlier that a Mac and Windows combo license for a single user costs $70.
If you only want to purchase for your Mac, you could always use 1password anywhere, which means you open your 1password account from dropbox. Although this requires you to manually copy and paste each password, so it would be kind of a burden if you use it frequently. It's intended to be used in a pinch.
Thanks
So it would be $70 for Mac and Windows.
Plus a free upgrade to 1Password 4(assuming he does go the MAS route)
@AGKyle - anything you can share with us regarding this often-mentioned Version 4? What are the main new features that we should be expecting?
AGKyle:
Hopefully you can help me. I recently purchased 1Password for my MacBook Retina. I've been using it on my iPad and iPhone for a few years.
I've run into a hurdle. When I only had my it on iOS I never used the program to create my passwords. I always did that myself and entered the passwords into 1Password.
My question: On my MacBook Pro Retina, Is there a way I can let the program reset my passwords so I can gain the full functionality of the program?? If so how can I do that fir each website? Also, keep in mind I use DropBox to sync to all 3 machines.
So I've been a 1password user for over 3 years now (Mac version & 1password pro), but I've recently starting using roboform as well since my work requires Windows. I'm considering purchasing 1password for Windows as well but I'm on the fence about it now. One thing I really like about roboform is the "search" box it gives you in your browser - it allows you to simply type the name of the site you want to log in to and then you can just click on it to log in. To do the same thing in 1password, I have to click on the 1password icon in my browser, click on the search icon, start typing the name of the site, and then click on it. I'm not saying that's difficult but it's an extra step that I'd like to be able to avoid.
Is there a way to add a "search" box for 1password as well or is the way I described the only way to get to it? If that's currently the quickest way, are there any plans to add this functionality in version 4?
1password certainly has a nicer interface (both on my Mac and on my iphone) but it seems that roboform is a bit quicker to use when you need to log in to multiple sites throughout the day.

Define 'in a pinch'.
It would be of more benefit to me to keep all passwords, so that I don't have to remember them. That would cut down on failed attempts, as I have many places to use a username/password.
I did not realize you could just start typing the name of site after you click on the icon - thank you for that.
Another question though. Does 1password provide the ability to log in to applications on your computer as well or just websites? I know that with roboform I can log in to applications that require a user id and password (at least on windows I can).
Happy to help!
There is no standard or secure way to insert data into other applications. So at this time we do not fill usernames and passwords into applications. Only the web browser.
The Windows version can using something called Auto-Type. Which I bet is the same thing that Roboform uses. There is no equivalent to this in OS X.
So, short answer, Windows? Yes
Mac OS X? No
Anyone here switch from the developer's site direct-purchase to the mac app store purchase?
Any improvements /disappointments to report between versions or transfers?
One general disappointment is the lack of exporting/importing password files from other password managers --- In my case, it will take a few hours to transfer every entry by hand from LP/RoboForm/etc. into 1Password --- it smells of lock-in and I dont like it.
From this thread on the developers forum it looks like Ver 4 will be a free upgrade for anyone buying 1Password now from the developers website or if you already have a copy from the Mac App Store.

This is correct. 1Password 4 is a free upgrade for any Windows and Mac purchase, regardless of which store it is purchased from.
Windows is only available from our site. Mac is available from our site or the Mac App Store.
