If that's the new 9.5mm drive I've got 2 of those on order. Hear good things about them. The dual 500gb platters seem to make a difference even though they're 5400rpm.
Actually, that's kind of pathetic. I'm not sure the problem lies with your drives.
bcrguy,
Those speeds on your original drive are indeed quite low. Unless the drive is almost completely full, it should be at least twice those speeds. Your SATA cable or connection to the logic board may be faulty. If you're under AppleCare, take it in to an Apple Store and have them replace what's needed. The first 1TB drive may still have been faulty, but even the stock drive should be performing much better.
Yes. Your AppleCare is still fine.i am under applecare so i might make a trek into the applestore friday to get it checked out.. now the applecare is still valid even if i replace the hard drive and ram right??
OP, it's possible that you just got a faulty drive. If nothing else has fixed the problem (repairing disk permissions, etc) then I would return it for an exchange and try again.
I had the same 1TB drive (well, 2 of them). The first one was also extremely slow like that, but the SMART data showed it was faulty (the 05 Sector Reallocation attribute was one of the faults). I got a new one that passed SMART diagnosis without issue, but it turned out that it's just a slow drive regardless. I sold it to a friend, as I couldn't use it.
I just got the Samsung 1TB 2-platter drive this evening, so it should be installed soon. I'm sure it'll be much better![]()
feedback after its installed would be appreciated.. i really have my heart set on putting a TB in this laptop..
I'll let you know but it looks like it'll be a while. I'm doing a "Restore" of my stock 750GB drive (650GB used) to the Samsung 1TB drive in Disk Utility over Firewire 800 and it says 9 hrs
Edit: It just changed to 5 hrs...a little better![]()
Don't mean to jack the thread, but are these speeds good?
What drive is it? 70MB/s is decent for a 5400RPM drive and really crappy for an SSD.
Edit: I saw your sig. If you have the 5400RPM version then it's fine.
It's off topic, but could anyone take a look at this screenshot and tell me if it's normal or bad?
