ok so i put in my original 250gb drive and did the aja system test and got 25.7 for write and 26.4 for read... but no lagging or anything.. drive is going back monday and im gonna get a 500gb 7200 rpm one..

Go SSD

i have the samsung spinpoint 1tb drive in my 2010 mbp and get 86/86 for the read/write in that test and have no problems whatsoever

I'm considering this drive as an upgrade. Does anyone know how these speeds compare to a 7200 RPM drive?

My 500gb scorpio black.

AJA system test mainly measures sequential throughput. It's nice if you're into video editing, otherwise it's not very relevant. I suggest Xbench instead, it's a little more relevant for normal usage.

The larger Scorpio Blue drives are notorious slow pokes. Check out the review on x-bitlabs for examples.

In order of best performance:
1. SSD
2. Seagate XT
3. Scorpio Black 750GB, Hitachi 7K750
4. Scorpio Black 500GB, Hitachi 7K500
5. Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB
6. other 5400rpm drives

I use the 500GB XT myself. If you really need 1TB get the Samsung M8, it's on Newegg. It's a lot faster than the Scorpio Blue 1TB.

SSD baby!

just Showing off a little :)

If that's the new 9.5mm drive I've got 2 of those on order. Hear good things about them. The dual 500gb platters seem to make a difference even though they're 5400rpm.

Actually, that's kind of pathetic. I'm not sure the problem lies with your drives.

bcrguy,

Those speeds on your original drive are indeed quite low. Unless the drive is almost completely full, it should be at least twice those speeds. Your SATA cable or connection to the logic board may be faulty. If you're under AppleCare, take it in to an Apple Store and have them replace what's needed. The first 1TB drive may still have been faulty, but even the stock drive should be performing much better.

the drive is almost full, hence why i want to put a bigger one in there. and i dont really care about the read and write speeds as much as the lagginess that i got with the TB.. i am under applecare so i might make a trek into the applestore friday to get it checked out.. now the applecare is still valid even if i replace the hard drive and ram right??

Yes. Your AppleCare is still fine.

But I'd leave that Apple Stock drive in when you take it in. This way the genius can't blame a 3rd party drive maker.

Also, make sure the genius does a quick read/write benchmark on a macbook there at the store to compare the results with what yours is showing. The read/write speeds of yours are too slow.

Sometimes the geniuses are busy and are just looking for a way to pat you on your head and send you on your merry way.

Whatever... you're savvy enough to know what's right or wrong. Don't leave until you're satisfied.

OP, it's possible that you just got a faulty drive. If nothing else has fixed the problem (repairing disk permissions, etc) then I would return it for an exchange and try again.

i already tried 2 of the WD terabyte drives.. im gonna hold off and try to find one of the samsung m8 TB drives on newegg and i might return the 500GB one and get it..

I had the same 1TB drive (well, 2 of them). The first one was also extremely slow like that, but the SMART data showed it was faulty (the 05 Sector Reallocation attribute was one of the faults). I got a new one that passed SMART diagnosis without issue, but it turned out that it's just a slow drive regardless. I sold it to a friend, as I couldn't use it.

I just got the Samsung 1TB 2-platter drive this evening, so it should be installed soon. I'm sure it'll be much better :D

feedback after its installed would be appreciated.. i really have my heart set on putting a TB in this laptop..

I'll let you know but it looks like it'll be a while. I'm doing a "Restore" of my stock 750GB drive (650GB used) to the Samsung 1TB drive in Disk Utility over Firewire 800 and it says 9 hrs

Edit: It just changed to 5 hrs...a little better :)

Don't mean to jack the thread, but are these speeds good?

What drive is it? 70MB/s is decent for a 5400RPM drive and really crappy for an SSD.

Edit: I saw your sig. If you have the 5400RPM version then it's fine.

Oh, sorry I should update my signature. It's a 7200 rpm. Seagate Momentus , not XT though. 500gb

AJA shows about 77MB/s for read & write. I'm about to start an exam so I can't post a screenshot atm, but I will later.

Results of the 1Tb drive attached.
