Iphone Apps Did Not Work/my Solution

1st Gen Iphone..

my problem:
iphone apps stop working/would not load apps on itunes..kept crashing..not starting.

solution for me:
full erase and reset of iphone and synce back to itunes..

GENUS BAR PASADENA NO NO NO HELP!!! ONCE AGAIN, TOTAL LET DOWN!! they told me to reformat my computer..fools...

For the record my phone is still is running fine since August 16th without the "all apps crashing and disappearing iPod music/videos" behavior I had since I did those steps I posted. So I am sure yours would have kept on running fine. The only issues I have with apps is the occasional app that won't run but powering the phone completely off and then on again fixes that issue.

I certainly do hope iTunes 8.0 and firmware 2.1 fixes those issues and others or there will be hell to pay.

Since using his steps, my iPhone has been problem free for the past week. A new record for me. :p

If Steve Jobs himself is emailing random customers to say a fix is on the way, you'd think they ought to let their own geniuses know that!

I'm sure it's no fun to tell a customer "wait a few more days," but it sure beats telling them to reformat when that likely will not even help.

Ah well.... here's hoping that this problem will be over in 12 hours, 14 minutes!

If anyone who downgraded iTunes to version 7.7 to deal with application crashes has updated to the new iTunes 8.0, please post here to let us know you remain crash-free after doing so.

I'd like to give the new iTunes a spin, but not if it is going to return me to crash-restore cycles again.

I did. I went ahead and installed iTunes 8.0 (gulp). I synced a few apps and so far so good, but that doesn't mean anything. Since we don't really know the cause, it is hard to say whether this new version will still cause issues or fix it until we run with it for a while. Plus, we have firmware 2.1 coming out this Friday which could be the real fix. Who knows. In any case, I will also be installing firmware 2.1 this Friday and I guess I will see in the coming weeks what happens.

Drop us a report once in awhile. The only real question I guess is whether to wait for Friday and the new firmware and do both at once, or move to do this one thing at a time.

If you did this, having been such an advocate for downgrading to 7.7 (and being responsible for my doing the same thing, only much later), maybe I'll join the party.

There are a two or three reports in the Apple discussion forums from people who have updated to iTunes 8.0 and cured their crashing problems. The difficulty is knowing yet whether they have just done what other have been doing with 7.7.1, only to later discover things go south again.

I'm doing 8.0 now, but I still don't plan to connect my phone to my computer until 2.1 :)

I loaded one too many apps overthe air directly onto the iPhone. This is with iTunes 8.0 and firmware 2.0.2.

The crashes have returned.

So far, installing a new app has not worked. Neither has deauthorizing and reauthorizing the computer.

Have you powered off the phone and turned it back on? Do they still crash? If that didn't help and if it were me, I would just wait 2 days for the 2.1 firmware update to see if that fixes things.

Since I installed iTunes 8.0 yesterday (and I synced a few apps) everything has been fine, but it has only been about 12 hours.

Sigh. Count me in. My apps just ceased working (iTunes 8/iPhone 2.0.2).

Can't wait for 2.1

Yes [I tried a hard reset of my iPhone], and they all still crash. If I can get it working again I will wait for Friday before installing anything again.
I was able to get my applications working again by unchecking the "Sync applications" box, syncing the phone - which removed all applications again(!) - deleting a couple of lingering apps on the phone, hard resetting the phone, deauthorizing and reauthorizing my computer in iTunes, rechecking the "Sync applications" box and syncing again. Note that I did not install the apps a few at a time; I just put them all back on at once. After that, all of the applications that I've installed on the phone are working again. There are still others I'd like to add, but I'm trying to keep it to a minimum in case I have to do this again before Friday.

No more installing or updating applications for me until after 2.1 is safely installed on my phone. Enough already!

Right there with you.... had the same 'bug' occur after upgrading to iTunes 8. Posted my frustration in another thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/6210993/

Regardless, I too will be waiting until after installing 2.1 before going too crazy and reloading everything. I REALLY hope that this fixes things once and for all... :(

This totally sucks... I had this issue maybe a month ago and had to do a full format to get my 3rd party and iPod apps working again... Lost all my application data including my fuel mileage data that I didn't have backed up anywhere because I haven't found an app that lets you export the stupid data... I have been VERY careful about not loading up on apps since then and I have been fine...

I was last able to use a 3rd party app last night without any trouble, didn't sync with a computer, didn't download any apps and now this morning this #@$*& problem is back, WTF!!! Has anyone found a real solution for this?? I don't buy the whole "running a certain version of iTunes on the computer fixes everything" explanation because I haven't synced in two days... I also don't believe it was any 3rd party app because I didn't load anything new between the time it was last working fine and when it crapped out... I am really pissed

Did you upgrade to iTunes 8.0? What version of iTunes were you running before?

My only suggestion would be to upgrade to the 2.1 firmware when it comes out tomorrow and see what happens.

That isn't good news! I've been refraining from updating, downloading, or syncing anything since I unloaded and reloaded all my apps after the crashing returned once I installed iTunes 8.0. Now I have to hold my breath for another day to hope my phone doesn't spontaneously begin crashing again. I had assumed that no syncing or loading new applications would protect me until 2.1 is ready. I had downgraded iTunes to 7.7, and for me, for whatever reason, that cured the crashes. Serves me right for getting version 8.0 before the firmware came out.

For me, I upgraded to 8.0 and then synced. It updated the apps that I didn't have updated just fine. Afterwards, I was checking out the new updates on the apps and a few new ones. All worked fine. I then tried the PayPal updated app and it kept crashing. Checked the others, they were fine. So I then read on the reviews for the PayPal app on the Appstore that you need to reboot for it to work. I shouldn't have done that. When I restarted, non of my apps worked and the iPod media is gone again. I am SO waiting for 2.1 to be our savior.

Also, I removed the PayPal app and reinstalled it. Still no go. So it messed something up.

Itunes 7.7 seemed the best option, some bug in 7.7.1 is still in 8.0.

Well, probably not exactly. There must be some kind of interaction in the firmware-iTunes pair that is causing this. The iPod Touch users are reporting no crashes with 2.1 and 8.0.

I was really surpised myself that installing iTunes 8.0 over 7.7 (not 7.7.1), which was working fine, brought back the crashes. I has assumed until then that there was an iTunes-specific bug in how DRM was being handled. It was that assumption that enticed me to install 8.0 right away, instead of waiting to do it along with the firmware update. I thought I had it all figured out - not so!

The only thing I am dreading about going to 2.1 is that iTunes forces a backup that I don't think you can stop (unlike the regular backups where you can press the X.) Backups on my system (Windows XP Pro) take hours. Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass the forced backup before the firmware update?

Backups with the new firmware and iTunes 8.0 are reported to be MUCH faster. But I don't think you want to interrupt the backup that happens just before an update. At least I wouldn't, just to preserve the chance to recover without beginning from scratch if something went awry during the firmware installation. Think of it this way - you will be enduring your last lengthy backup. Compare that to all the aggravation involved in restoring that you once did, and it pales in comparison.

The backups that I had after installing iTunes 8.0 and before I stopped doing them went much faster than they did under iTunes 7.7, for what consolation that may be worth.

(Maybe you didn't endure many restores because of crashing applications - as I recall, you jumped on downgrading to iTunes 7.7 some time ago.)

I didn't do any restores actually. I refused to go through all that and decided to wait for an easier workaround or for Apple to come up with a fix. Especially since it was just the 3rd party apps that were affected and not the native apps and core functionality of the phone was still working. I bought the phone on August 8th and then first upgraded iTunes to 7.7.1 and then upgraded the firmware on the phone to 2.0.1 that day. A few days later is when all my apps stopped working. The apps would start working again after I would download an app from the store etc... then they would stop working again. Then on August 16th I did the steps in the link in my signature below (downgrading to iTunes 7.7.0, resyncing apps etc...) . Ever since then all my apps have been working fine (with the exception of an app here and there not working which is resolved by power cycling the phone).

I actually did a full backup the other day (I let it backup overnight) which is why I was hoping to avoid waiting for a full backup when I do the 2.1 upgrade.

The third party apps made the iPhone for me, so I wasn't patient with the idea of letting them go until Apple figured something out.

If the fix was going to take a long time, then I certainly would have put more effort into looking for a solution. But it was only about a week of dealing with apps working then not working before I tried the iTunes downgrade and that has been successful so far (even after going to iTunes 8.0). Hopefully the 2.1 firmware coming tomorrow will fix the issue once and for all.
