I had TERRIBLE battery life on a newly replaced 3G. I would do a little texting, thats about it, and after an hour of being unplugged I would be down to 80% battery life. Used to go a few hours before I'd even see the battery drop below 100%. I was messing around with Google Sync push, but even after i set it to disabled I was still having the problem. Reverted back to 2.2 and haven't had a problem since.

And for what its worth, this was on a Jailbroken device, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Battery Life has always been okay for me. but whenever I am not using my phone its usually on the charger.
Sometimes here and there I will fully drain it and leave it dead for a bit then fully recharge it.

try it

My battery life and performance are as good as ever. I assume you've tried resetting the phone, which will clear any processes that might be hanging in the background and draining your power?

I reset the iphone every morning. No help.
Restored the iphone. No help.
The only major changes that happened prior to this sudden decrease in battery life are 2.2.1 and Google sync

IPhone Atlas has an old post about 2.2.1 battery drain

Dozens of users have reported dramatically reduced battery life under iPhone OS 2.1.1. A sampling of iPhone Atlas readers:

"Ever since I upgraded to 2.2.1 I have noticed that the battery life of my iPhone has significantly diminished. For example, my phone might have full/near-full battery charge at night, but in the morning it is down to 10%. Before the upgrade there would be almost no battery loss over night. I'm finding that I have to recharge it 2-3 times a day even with little use."
"Now the battery indicator never goes down. This gives the impression that there is better battery life, but instead, the battery dies instantaneously without warning.
"I notice my battery not lasting as long as before the update."
Potential fixes include:

Drain the battery completely Use your iPhone until the battery dies completely (indicated by a battery icon appearing on the screen when the sleep/wake button is pressed), then fully recharge the device. It appears that the full discharge may reset circuitry that prevents a full charge from occurring, despite iconic indication of a full charge.

Turn off location services It appears that the Maps application and some third-party applications that use GPS functionality fail to power down the necessary hardware components when they are no longer in use. Navigate to Settings > General > Location Services and turn these services off when you are not using Maps or another location-enabled app.

Turn off Push then restart The iPhone 3G's Push functionality for Exchange and Mobile Me accounts can destroy battery life. Turn this option off in "Settings" then restart your iPhone by powering it off then on.

Restore the iPhone with original settings Launch iTunes and select the second option in the "Version" section on the Summary page for your iPhone. This restore process will erase your iPhone software and data, including all settings, which can be restored later via iTunes

okay, today was retarded. I didn't wake my phone up all day and it went from half charge to less than 10% in a matter of 6 hours. Either the battery indicator is not working correctly or something is using the battery while it's idling.

Today was the 6th time my battery died the last few weeks, again, it never died while i was out in the past.

iPhone Battery

Based on my personal experience 2.2.1 is a little bit worse in terms of battery compared to 2.2. I have found 2.1 to be the best overall.

But for all of those that don't get at least 1 full day (24 hrs) of usage on their iPhone I'd suggest make an appointment with an Apple Genius and ask them to exchange your iPhone.

The battery on my old iPhone would go down to 20% after about 10 hrs of moderate usage. I got it replaced and now using the same settings and same amount of usage the battery lasts for 2 full days.

I also found that you have to be ruthless with the Geniuses. A couple just run the Diagnostics Program and they said "No, the battery looks fine."

Best way to deal with this is to go to the iPhone spec webpage and compare the values there with what you are getting. Then basically do not take no for an answer.

Battery life with 2.2 was fine. I'd end up with 12% battery after an 8AM to 3AM day of usage with internet and phone and heavy ipod use. I completely wiped and reset the phone for the 2.2.1 upgrade last week, then rebuilt. Now I'm seeing the phone hit 20% battery from 8AM to to 7PM, so about an 80% drop in only 12 hours of use. That sucks.

While Im glad not all of you have this problem, it sucks for me and the others who do have it. Im not doing anything differently, but my battery life is noticeably shorter. After a full charge last night before bed, I woke up to it at about 75% this morning. I'll try a factory restore, but when I restore from a backup, wont this just cause the problem to happen again?

no my batttery life is ridiculous loses pretty much 75% of its charge overnighht

I really can't understand why people take their phone OFF the charger while they sleep then complain about poor battery life the next day...

I can -- it's a good test. When I leave my iphone off the charger overnight, which I sometimes do after a day of only light usage, I lose just few percentage points of power. If people are losing lots of juice overnight, that's a clear sign something is wrong.

Thats fine. But BEFORE 2.2.1 when I took it off the charger, I didnt wake up to a 25% drain in the morning. Its not good for the battery to be plugged in all night anyways.

i have this same problem. my battery is drained when push is on. push worked fine up until 2.2.1 (or oddly enough, about 2 weeks after upgrading to 2.2.1).

i have email on fetch, which helps for the time being, but i'd like my push email back.

If i turn push on, my usage time equals standby time and the data ticker continues to slowly grow even when the phone is on standby. The phone gets hot and battery drains.

Very annoying, glad to see i'm not the only one experiencing. it. Anyone downgrade to 2.2 or 2.1 and had this problem go away?

After my original iPhone 2G (battery was great/never had a problem) was stolen, I ended up buying the 3G version a few days ago and the battery life is spotty/terrible. I left my phone on airplane mode for flight to the west coast and by the time we landed 6 hours later the battery was dead. Then last night I charged the phone before I went to bed and when I woke up this morning the battery was drained again....terrible. I am thinking AT&T sold me a refurbished model or one of the applications is draining my battery....in any case, not happy and miss my 2G.

Possible problem

My wife's phone had terrible battery life, turns out the internal modem kept reseting. That's what the Geinus bar guy said. Every time it reset, it drained more than normal battery. We swapped the phone and now she can go days without recharging. Before her phone was dead by 5pm, withouth ever using it.

i just recently got an iphone 3g, and one of the first things that struck me was how amazingly long the battery lasted while surfing the net, listening to music, watching videos, playing with apps, etc.

the honeymoon was short-lived though; now when i take my iphone off the charger in the morning, the battery is almost dead by mid afternoon. after only 8 hrs in standby and next to no usage. screen off. wifi off. 3g off. in an area with perfect reception and not going into any applications.

i'm not sure that the issue is tied to 2.2.1 for me though, as i upgraded right when i bought the phone and its worked fine for the first bit. in case it's an errant application, i've removed any app store downloads and reset. we'll see how the phone holds up after the next charge cycle. i'm certainly hoping it doesn't come to requiring a service app't!
