How many are doing push ups to military standards such as shown in this picture?

Breaking the plane between the elbows definitely increases the effort required. For many, who have developed chest muscles, it feels as if you are almost touching the ground with your chest.

I normally go all the way down to which my nose almost touches the floor.

+another 60 (+2 to make it a nice number :p)

MR Total: 8990

I do 300 pushups per day--four sets wide, four sets narrow--two or three days a week. In the last seven days, I've done about 600 pushups so add that to the total if you want.

I use the "Perfect Pushup" bars I got as a gift from my sister-in-law last Christmas. Here's the link: http://www.perfectpushup.com/

Just be careful that you don't bob your nose up and down. Most folks usually end up doing nose pushups, but they don't realize it at the time. Watching them, however, shows a much different perspective.

The best way is assume the front leaning rest position with your head up. And then go down to where it feels that your chest is almost touching the ground which ensures that you break the elbow plane.

Awesome! :D

I'm using the Perfect Pushup - my chest is going down to about even with my hands.
Awesome! :D

That's not military standard. We have to go to 90 degrees at the elbows, no lower, for our PFA.
Youngster! ;)

Yep, the new standards are more lax.

A few years ago we did them like shown in the photo. At the time, the standards required that your feet to be together during the iteration. On one test that I took, they put a dollar bill between our heals. If it feel out, that was the end of your count.

I do my training sets the way you showed, though.
Good for you.

Going down that far does much more for the development of muscle tissue and increasing your flexibility. :)

Please note everyone, I am not trying to squelch the great accomplishments here. Just trying to add some perspective so that we are doing good pushups which provides the maximum benefit, which after all, is the reason we are doing our push ups if I am not mistaken.

I used to do them that way, but you're not supposed to look ahead as you do them - your nose is supposed to be pointed to the floor if you do it proper.

But for shape and form, that's just how I do them actually..

I thought that was the proper way? It's what i've been doing...

+50

total = 10226, time for a new thread/goal?

What on Earth are you guys talking about? The title clearly says 50 000 push ups!

(congratulations to everyone so far)

Yeah, I think if you look ahead, there's an increased chance you'll unintentionally curve your back slightly so that your stomach is closer to the floor than your shoulders. With your face looking downwards, it's easier to keep your back straight.

Anyway, just did 30. Something definitely went amiss....
