why all the positives?

we're at 286 days since a refresh, and now the news is another 1-2 months, and this is getting overwhelmingly positive votes? These imac updates were due a long time ago, and it hadn't even occurred to me that it could be another month or two. This is very, very disappointing. apple seems to be creeping towards updating its desktops once a year, and that's certainly not good news.

i agree, the rumors of imacs have been wrong for so long, i just dont know who to trust anymore :p

Yes, but this is a rumor site and it's fun to speculate! If a person doesn't like reading and discussing rumors, whether they are rehashed or not, then MacRumors may not be the place for them. Although last time I checked there is no MacFacts.com... :p ;) Or wait, I suppose that would be here.... :D

Vesa

Call me boring, but I'm hoping they bring back the VESA wall mount capability. A new brushed steel touch screen iMac will look darn good mounted on my wall!

I would hope that new iMacs (if indeed updated before October) come with free upgrade to Leopard but knowing Apple that probably won't happen if no definitive Leopard date yet.

They'd be absolutely retarded to drop the 17in iMac. Also, I'd love to see them develop a budget friendly 17in LCD display for the Mini and Mac Pros.

Agreed. As has been said many times already on these Forums, there is a definite feeling that Apple has been neglecting its computers. Removing "Computer" from their company name, focusing on the iPod last eyar and now this year the AppleTV and of course even more so the iPhone... we're definitely seeing less frequent hardware updates.

In a way, it's not a bad thing - a buyer can rest assured knowing that his purchase will now not be obsolete for almost a year due to the infrequency of updates! ;) But that isn't necessarily a good thing.

Somewhat off-topic, but I sincerely hope Apple isn't putting too many of its eggs in one basket with the iPhone - they seem to be sacrificing other aspects of their business for it. I seem to recall a similar situation with the Lisa back in the day, and we all know how that ended...

I agree. I expect we will see a mbp speed equivalent with a new case/style design. Maybe a second HDD, but I really don't see touch screen, backlight LED screens, Penryn, 880 GTX etc.

iMacs are in short supply at the moment. Same thing happened with the MacBook's about a month ago. So I reckon the new iMacs will be out in about a month, which is what they are saying. So I concur.

I'll second that. With it being (presumably) so close to the Leopard launch date, a rebate or partial discount of some sort would definitely be welcome.

ok

well leopard release day is prob. october 29.2007....knowing apple!

and the 17inch iMac should just become the macmini and be like 699 or 799?

Mini Surprise ....

I so hope they will drop the 17 inch i mac and replace it with a New design/spec Mac mini that could replace the 17 inch iMac , sthen just bye a 23 inch screen and there's a very nice media server for in the house plus a bedroom tv/vdr/dvd player and recorder .
Aslong as it gets some more power then it has now, lol , like it would be possible not to ;-).

I honestly don't care what the redesign looks like. I'm sure it will be fine with me. I just want the damned thing!!

Why? Cause you like 17" screens?

20" screens have come down in price so much that 17" are not worth making or using.

It is just Apple that is caught using prices from 12 months ago that they still use the 17". Then again, that's how they make all their money (see my sig).

I agree. New design for sure; I doubt a second HDD just due to the physical space limitations; and I agree with you, no touch screen (if this technology was being introduced we would have seen it in Leopard as well which we didn't). LED backlighting perhaps, but definitely not Penryn as it is not slated for relaease until 2008 IIRC.

The timing is certainly impecable. I'm a mac owner, and I love apple products, but I needed a machine that was specifically geared towards gaming. I was about to build a new PC until I was hit with the new iMac news here on rumors and it's possible announcement at WWDC. If in fact it were to use a video card 8600GT on up, it would save me the depression of not being able to use OSX. Now...If only leopard came simultaneously...

yeah i agree, i dont really care what it will look like, but as it is apple it wont look bad :p most of there stuff looks pretty good

I am thinking there is a possibility for a second HDD because with TimeMachine coming out with leopard in October, I expect Apple could use the second HDD to show that they are making a new machine that will effectively use a lot of the features coming out with the new OS. You are right though that it would be a challenge to put it in a "smiller" machine.

how many stabs in the dark do these rumor sites get before nobody trusts them? if i predict the same thing each quarter or month for a year, do i get recognition when it finally hits? these sites have all but lost their credibility imo

AppleInsider actually predicted correctly (if only 5 days prior to the conference) that there would be no iMac updates at WWDC, and have been pretty quiet otherwise. It's ThinkSecret that repeatedly trumpeted a June refresh of the iMac.

I follow most Apple rumors just for fun, but I have to pay particular attention to iMac rumors because we're planning to upgrade to new iMacs at school for next year. We have to make our purchases over the summer.

If the iMac line is updated, it'll be nice to have the latest and greatest, but if they drop the 17" model, shift the price range, and offer discounts on remaining stock of the old models through the Apple Education channel then we'll consider all of our options.

I think it will be interesting to see how Apple handles the whole video card issue. The first order of business during Steve's WWDC keynote was to promote how Apple is attempting to take gaming more seriously on the Mac due to its new partnerships and the like. However bringing more games to the Mac, optimizing them, etc. means nothing if you don't properly outfit your machines to handle these games! Many people do not want to have to buy a Mac Pro just for games. An iMac would be/should be an excellent solution for games as well, however it all comes down to how Apple addresses issues like which video card to include and such. I guess we'll get a good indication of how serious Apple truly is about gaming with this new iMac release.

And for that matter, the Mac Pros could use some updates graphics cards as well...

If it's true that updates could come as soon as late July, then I wonder what's going to happen with the delayed shipping dates of some of the various hard drive configurations for the iMacs -- especially the 24". Come July 1st, if the hard drive upgrades are still seeing 3 week delays then sales would surely drop off before the release. Just an interesting thought I had.

Totally. One big problem for gaming iMacs, what do you do when in 1-2yr your video card sucks? Game companies won't slow down because Macs are built like washing machines -- by washing machines I mean single purposed non-upgradeable devices.

It would be great if they somehow get the video card to be upgradeable.

That might go in to the Mac Pro but at the most the iMacs might use is an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT.

If the iMacs don't get too slim, they won't need to use a mobile card (8600M). Just as the current iMac doesn't use the mobile radeon.

Uh, the current iMac does use the Mobile Radeon. (x1600 Mobile)

They could use the 8700M GT is they use a mobile card. If they use a desktop card they may stick with the 86 or 87 series. The 8800 GTS or GTX requires too much power for a small case (have you guys seen the cooling solution for those cards?).
