IMO, 17" iMac is a goner or it will become eMac II. 17" is pretty much obsolete these days for a desktop machine. Even budget PCs ship with 19" (same resolution as 17" :D ).

But 17" iMac death could be a good news for Mac Mini fans as Apple will (hopefully) try to keep something in that price range.

Oh yeah! I cannot wait -- my wife has been dying for an iMac and I've told her we've got to wait for the NEXT GEN. I'm glad I'll be able to calm her down with this news!

Wonder if that might mean a revamp of the Cinema Displays to 20", 24" and 30" models. One could hope, it's been waaaay too long.

I'd like to eventually look something like this...

So eight or ten weeks after the new iMac's hit I'm going to have to cough up another $129 for Leopard? No. I'm going to wait that out, baring some kind of incentive.

Actually, I love the idea of using mobile chips in a desktop system. It is a bit more expensive, but totally worth it.

Just asking, do they not throttle down if hot? I thought they had slower FSB's also but looks like they do not.

Apple Can Only Update As Quickly As Intel Can

there is a definite feeling that Apple has been neglecting its computers. Removing "Computer" from their company name, focusing on the iPod last eyar and now this year the AppleTV and of course even more so the iPhone... we're definitely seeing less frequent hardware updates...but I sincerely hope Apple isn't putting too many of its eggs in one basket with the iPhone - they seem to be sacrificing other aspects of their business for it...
I don't see it that way at all. I think Apple can only update Macs as quickly as Intel can update processors. And with the upcoming processor price reduction in late July, I see no reason why Apple should update anything else 'til August. Seems like a lot of impatience permeates this Forum lately.

1. No touchscreen yet, maybe next year, probably 2009.

2. No LED yet, that will be a 2008 revision to the new form factor.

3. July 10th or 17th, anything later is an even bigger slap in the face. We will have waited through the iPhone and the Leopard re-preview. Tomorrow would actually be better, but August is an insult.

Touchscreen makes a lot of sense for an iMac -- particularly if it's essentially just a flatter version of the current iMac -- but it seems like something that Apple would want to market as a Leopard (read: Leopard-ONLY) feature.

Macworld '08...

The iPhone has been a phenomenal smash. Sales states. Market share stats. Blah, blah, blah.

People sure do love that touchscreen, so today we're bringing it to the iPod and the iMac. Leopard runs the iPhone, so the technology has been hiding in Leopard THE WHOLE TIME waiting for just the right hardware. And here it is: the new iMac and the new iPod.

<wild applause from the audience>

Something like that. We're due for another iPod form factor before January, so maybe not.

about the new iMac using multi-touch? honestly... my arms would get sore if i had to keep touching the screen instead of using the keyboard/mouse... totally idiot idea... all you iPhone freaks go away!

Who on earth is going to buy a Rev A of any apple product?

Hehe, not me. I learned my lesson. THe Macbook in my sig got repaired more than I like...

- Random shutdown, backlight flicker -> logic board, heat pipe and inverter board changed
- came back with busted screen and wasn't built together right -> repaired again
- Battery popped -> replaced battery
- Trackpad button got loose -> changed top case (had to wait 2 months for it)
- Replacement top case had half of the buttons broken -> replaced
- Inverter board busted (making backligght flicker) -> replaced
- Inverter board busted again -> replaced

Right now it's working. But the only thins that are original are the frame, bottom case and the display assembly (i.e. the case of the display). Everything else has been exchanged (the RAM and HDD were upgraded by me though). I used to treasure my Macbook but it got all scratched up during the repairs :-(

And yes, I got a hardware protection plan that will cover for repairs the next 2 years. Kinda like apple care, minus phone and software support.
