Why go Low End?

The iPods growth has tailed off... apple needs a new product for the masses.

In 2001 we got the iPod... it was expensive.
In 2004 we got the iPod mini... it was Low End and affordable... iPod took off.

In 2007 we got the iPhone... it was expensive
In 2008 we could get the iPhone Nano... it will be Low End and affordable... the iPhone will take off.

If the 3G iPhone does not have a slightly cheaper monthly contract than the current one, this rumoured 'low-end iPhone' is the one I will go for.

Apple would never put out a 'low end product'. that is why there is no MacBook under $1,000

Um... the MacBook is Apple's 'low-end notebook', just like the Mac mini is Apple's 'low-end desktop', and the iPod shuffle is Apple's 'low-end music player'.

The iPhone was one where he was off, but he has been dead on plenty of other times. It's especially not fair to use the iPhone as an example as even the CEO of AT&T hadn't seen the actual phone before it was announced...

And besides the fact that there were multiple prototype devices floating around Apple HQ to catch leakers and keep the real deal locked up...

A low-end iPhone would be a huge hit for many that I know looking to get a new cell-phone

The price of the iPhone at the moment and especially during launch was just too much for friends/family of mine to come over to.

A cheap, stripped-down version would be a huge sell, imo. When I say huge sell, I don't think it will set any records but it would become a big hit for many looking to become a part of the iPhone cult at a price they can afford

I am not sure that a strip down version of the iPhone would sell well.
What would you strip software and hardware wise that people can do without?

I plan to buy 3 top of the line iPhones soon after they are available, I am not sure that I would be interested in less than the top of the line.

I am going to take a stab and say the $200 iphone will be pretty much the current 4gb model or maybe a 6gb model(if lucky) with an update design of the 3G model. I doubt that we will see an 8gb model for $200 at this point in time, because that would somehow cannibalize sales of the ipod touch and the Nano. Unless the rumors of an phone Nano are true, and we get a 2-2.5in screen iphone with 3g and come in only a 4gb model.

Would you idiots stop making fun of people who are poorer? "LOLZ UR POOR U DON'T DESURV AN iPHAONE!!1"

Well how about me- my mom has kidney disease and cancer, she can't work and my dad died when I was young, we have no source of income because she can't work and I'm too young to be hired.

So- I don't deserve an iPhone?

You prefer the system where people like us can't get one because we're 'poor?'

Does it make the iPhone less cool because somebody who's not a rich ******* owns one?

You people sicken me.

You have enough money for a computer and the internet. I'd say you aren't too bad off.

Apple will only release one iPhone. 3G service on it may be optional but I can't see Apple releasing different models and leaving it up to the consumers which model they need: IE edge, 3G, etc.

They just need to release one version of the 3G iPhone . And I don't take Kevin Rose as a good source of info.

Yeah, he's clearly full of it.

My iMac was a gift and we aren't paying for the internet, a friend is. Mr. Jumps to Conclusions.

Memory is not that expensive and Apple stopped selling the 4 Gig model because the customers were mainly buying the 8 Gib model.

The 16Gig model is currently 499, the 8 Gib model is 399 for a difference of 100 dollars for double the memory. If 8 Gig is worth 100 then 4 gig would only be 50 dollars. So prices would be 499, 399 and 349. Nowhere near 199.

In order to bring it to 199 they need to remove some hardware and or software capability. Maybe they could remove multi-touch, but who would buy an iPhone with no multi-touch capabilities? It would not be an iPhone.

Now it would be possible that AT&T would eat the difference by giving a subsidy but otherwise I do not see a 199 iPhone. You can not remove any important capabilities and still have an iPhone.

How many ears have you got?! Besides, a strip-downed iPhone would not be made with the wallet of someone who can afford 3 phones in mind.

You aren't understanding me. If you were in such a sad state, you would have sold your iMac because you would have needed the money more.

I feel bad for you, but this is America, not a communist country. If you hate it here so much, move to Cuba.

I know Apple stop selling the 4gb model, but I am thinking they are going to bring it back for the low end market. Think about most 4gb mp3 players, and entertainment devices can be had for as little as 100usd brand new for many major retail stores. And we know Apple could give us more for the same price(in the ipod line up that is) so we know they can do similar with the iphone. To sum it up, my previous comment stands.

I have a wife and almost adult kid, they also want an iPhone. Buying 3 has not much to do with being able to afford it. Family plan with 3 iPhones.

People in China, and India make less than a lot of other people, yet they basically pay the equivalent of 4 to 12 month salary for an iPhone.

Remember that Apple does not sell to the same group of people as DEll. Apple is not interested in competing based on price. I see some discounts but not 300 from a 499 iPhone. They already discounted the iPhone by 200 several months ago. I would not expect a lot more. Maybe AT&T will discount it to 199 but not Apple.

Um... what? This person didn't attack you or anyone else nor did he say anything bad about america. They asked a valid question, why the attitude here is sometimes "iphones would be less cool if everyone had them, look what happened with the razr."

It would probably be a poor financial decision on to buy an iphone in their current situation, even a low end one, but if they did own one I would not feel that the iphone itself was somehow lacking in coolness simply because someone less financially sound than me has one.

If anything, this will probably be the original iPhone offered at a discount.

It would be odd to run out of stock on the current iPhone, then re-intro it.

There are, likely, economies of scale and higher profits associated with the new model.

I would suspect that they intro an entry-level "new" iPhone, rather than last year's model.

Maybe you can....
What if Apple released 2 new products in addition to the iPhone 2?

1) An iPod Nano Touch. Mini touch screen letting you do the most basic of functions with your music. No email, no maps, no nothing... but music.

2) An iPhone Nano- Similar concept. Just a smaller iPhone but with music. So it is just a phone and music... nothing more. There are tons of people out there who just want a phone, and music. No need for webapps, email, safari, etc.
