I have a wife and almost adult kid, they also want an iPhone. Buying 3 has not much to do with being able to afford it. Family plan with 3 iPhones.

They need some family discount pack... like... buy an iPhone and you have the option of getting unlimited extra iPhone Nanos for 50%... with the condition that all of the iPhones have a joint plan. So that way you can buy one big iPhone (for yourself of course,) and then also get a iPhone Nano for each of the kids... one for the wife... and each of those are half price. Then they all share minutes and the other limits for the plan for a price just a bit more than the iPhone's normal price. They could sell them by the dozens...

I am not sure that a strip down version of the iPhone would sell well.

What would you strip software and hardware wise that people can do without?

Space for one

I really have no idea if a 3G model costs more per phone for Apple but if it does, that can go.

My current iPhone is fine for me. I will upgrade to 3G because I have the money and need for the speed BUT if I had to stay, it wouldn't be a big deal

I don't know about you, but I think I prefer the current system, in which poor people go without iPhones.

For pride and exclusivity? Give me a break.

From an investor's perspective, if offering a $200 model along side the high priced ones will ultimately add more to the bottom line--- than it is a good thing.

Look at some of the countries the iPhone is going to be offered in--- they will definitely need to offer a lower priced model if Apple is going to go mainstream with it.

Remember, the iPod didn't really take off until the lower priced Mini debuted.

Would be nice if they offered a 4gb iPhone, tad smaller and thinner, no 3G. £99 with contract, sweet.

I hope they don't do that like motorola did with their slvr l7 (which i have) and subsequent l6 and l2 models (the lattermost of which had no camera. That would definitely lower customers' perception of high-end products for apple. although, they did do this to their ipod line with the shuffle.

i haven't been following apple closely before summer of last year but i now that apple released so many products lie the iphone, time capsule, macbook air, ipod touch recently, i can't imagine how their site would have looked a few months ago. was it very sparse?

also @joeshell:
many companies could 'add more' to their bottom line like rolex, bmw, prada, but then their wouldn't be a feeling of exclusivity for those who want it. even jobs said something like they don't want to make the most money or be the biggest company, they just want to make the best computers.

Apple would never put out a "low end product. that is y there is no MacBook under $1,000

MacBook with the EDU discount is $999 ;)

You all need to chill or this thread is going to end up closed, if you can afford a iPhone great for you, if you cant you cant simple as that.

Why go Low End?

The iPods growth has tailed off... apple needs a new product for the masses.

In 2001 we got the iPod... it was expensive.
In 2004 we got the iPod mini... it was Low End and affordable... iPod took off.

In 2007 we got the iPhone... it was expensive
In 2008 we could get the iPhone Nano... it will be Low End and affordable... the iPhone will take off.

I am all for it and I totally agree. Imagine an iPhone Nano that is affordable and does not require a data plan!!!! Can we say 100 million iPhones sold??? Think about it people! It is going to happen, the question is just when.

I would definitely save up and buy one! If only Apple allowed T-mobile as one of the carriers. I bet the iPhone would do soo much better if they allowed multiple carriers.

An iPhone without the data plan won't happen. There'd be no point.

I do think there will be a cheaper iPhone, though - it'll have 3G and a second camera over the current model and that's it. No price increase. Or, for an extra $150, you can have GPS and more storage.

The iPhone won't be the biggest part of the show. Most of the keynote will be about OSX IMO.

It would make sense. When the price was lowered here in the UK, shops that were usually selling one or two a day sold about 15.

Not the first rumor of this kind too... i remember reading one a while back that said there would be two models of the iphone.

It is possible that there may be an enterprise phone with striped down features. Many large corporations fear trade secrets will be lost by having employees or visitors with cameras and microphones. Anyway, a cheaper form with less security risks could be issued to more employees.

I'm with the other guy...
Whats the point of having apple products if they let poor people have them? Poor people will just bring virus and poor diseases with them.

Seriously, when I pull out my iphone, I want the homeless guy who sees me do it to know that I spent 400 dollars on a phone, and he doesn't have 3 dollars for a cheeseburger. Not only that, but I spent it on a phone that doesn't even have GPS.

If that wino could go "maybe he got the subsidized version" it takes all the fun out of it.

Exactly what I was thinking, too....

There's still a market out there for an iPhone that's cheaper because it does without the 3G and GPS. Most of it will be met by people reselling their used phones when they upgrade, but Apple will surely also have some remaining "old stock" to clear out from warehouses somewhere, even if some of it is just refurbished product. (One would assume they hang onto a certain level of stock of refurbs, made from broken units that come in for repair. But after a certain point in time, it's more cost-effective to eliminate that stock and just swap people's broken units in for warranty work with the current model.)

If anything, this will probably be the original iPhone offered at a discount.

Unfortunately, in all of this pre-WWDC, too many people have their hopes up with a 3G iPhone among other countless expectations for Apple's upgrade. It seems to me that all of these expectations are just wishful thinking more than realistic ones. I can already see all of the negative votes of those whining and crying on June 9th when Apple delivers the announcement regarding the iPhone and it doesn't meet all of the rumors and speculation.

Kevin Rose / Low end iiPhone

I am NOT sticking up for Kevin Rose, but, as one who also writes a blog about Apple News and Rumors, I have to say that it is very hard to decide what to report and what not too. While it is true that Mr. Rose and several other well-known blogs have gotten some things wrong in the past, these same people have got a hugh decision on what to publish and what not too. Sometimes, Apple's own media personnel release bogus information on the web, so it makes bloggers who do report any of the rumors look like an a*s in the end.

For those people who are ready to scream about a blog getting wrong or inaccurate information about something that you have read on a "rumors web site", then I would like to invite you do open up an Apple blog and see how many rumor items you get right or miss out on reporting something that you may think would be 100% wrong, but ends up being the opposite.

My only beef with the iPhone has been not so much with Apple, but AT&T service in my area. It's very spotty, and I'm sure the data plan would c..r..a..w..l.. in my locale. It would be awesome to have a less expensive version with limited or no data plan, but with visual vmail, texting, and full ipod function. Until they get service extended a bit, I can't see the point in plunking down $400 plus $60 per month for a phone. Guess I'll stick with my moto KRZR and iPod video combo for now. Edit: However, the rumors of $199 price point are very intriguing to me.
