I could go on and on but you get the picture. We have everything he could want and we have it now. It has been confirmed that he is in talks with our Athletic Director and I do expect him to become our new head coach. Time will tell, hopefully by the end of the week.

So now that Gillispie has decided to stay at A&M (with a nice raise to go along with it), who are the next targets?

I've seen mention of Self and Floyd, but both could be difficult to lure away.

You know, I'm not really sure. I read the message boards surrounding Razorback athletics more religiously these days than MacRumors. What we want to avoid is another up and comer like Stan Heath. We want a proven winner but our Athletic Director has messed up this situation big time. I really don't know who we will get.

Self would be great since he coached at Tulsa, knows the area and wouldn't have to put up with all the demanding KU fans. I don't believe we will get him though.

Floyd is my top realistic choice right now. He has a lot of good things going for him at USC but he will always be second to UCLA. Floyd is from Mississippi, knows the area very well and we would be willing to pay him a lot more money ( which would go a lot further being in Arkansas over California.)

We shall see and when I see some credible evidence I will post that latest rumblings of our coaching search :(

It'll be interesting to see if you can land him. He's said a number times that he loves LA and USC, and with the new arena, OJ Mayo coming in next year, and a nice run in the tourney this year to build on, he's sitting pretty there. One big thing he could use is a salary boost, but I bet USC would take care of him if someone else came calling.

I think Illinois fans would agree, from experience.

As an Illinois alum, I've got mixed feelings about Self. He was a decent coach and a good recruiter, but he's never gotten over the hump in the tourney. I heard CBS broadcasters heaping praise on him as well, but it's too early to compare him to Smith or Wooden or anyone else who's actually led good teams to championships. Of course, playing what essentially amounted to a road game against UCLA didn't help, but still - he needs to win the big one before any comparisons begin. I'd put Izzo, Knight, and others in front of Self on the comparison list.

I'd like for him to do well, although personally I believe he could have turned Illinois into a perennial contender because of his recruiting. Weber is a good coach, but struggles getting the talent onto the court.

I agree, all those things are very nice. Latest rumblings point to Floyd turning down our offer. OJ Mayo could prove to be a problem anyways. He is only going to LA for stardom and will only be there for a year (off to the NBA).

Jamie Dixon of Pitt is another person I've been eyeing. Good resume if you ask me.

Now Jamie Dixon would turn some heads at Arkansas. I'm high on him. I think he has something like 105 wins, second all time for coaches in their first 4 years, has experience from UC-Santa Barbara. He's a comer. But would he be interested in leaving Pitt for Arkansas?

Today we hired Dana Altman from Creighton for the Arkansas Razorbacks head coaching spot. Excuse me while I go shoot myself .

jon

edit: Did a little research about the guy and it doesn't seem too bad. Certainly not a B. Gillispie or J. Calipari. I am intrigued though that the Creighton fans on the message boards are in complete meltdown mode about this coach leaving. Hopefully he will have what it takes for SEC ball.

Altman is a terrific coach...he's had Creighton performing at such a high level for years now. I think you'll be pleased with him.

Yep, much of the Hog country are starting to come around once we do some research. The fact that he has been offered jobs by Miami, Tennessee, Georgia and others eases my mind. I'll reserve judgment until I see him on the court.

Well the search continues. Altman has second guessed himself and is heading back to Creighton...Incredible.

Tony Bennett definitely deserved to win the Naismith College Coach of the Year. Go Cougs!

P.S. Tony Bennett coaches Washington State University not University of Washington, like CBS likes to get wrong.

More problems at Arkansas with two players testing positive for pot. Doubt anything will come of it, but it's certainly not good news. Any news on candidates for the job?

Gillispie to Kentucky after spurning Arkansas...not surprised at that.

Oh **** is really about to hit the fan. There is a huge scandal going on with our football coach. I expect him to be gone here within the week and I can't frickin' wait. You will soon hear the details on CBS and ESPN.

Time for a whole house cleaning at U of A (other than baseball and track).

We also offered J. Calipari 20 million for 8 years today. Don't think he will bite though.

John Pelphrey of South Alabama will be our new head coach. Announcement will come tomorrow. I will have to reserve judgement till I see him on the court. He has played under Pitino and coached under Sutton and Donovan. He knows the SEC and played for Kentucky.

Wish us luck

Pelphrey is a solid coach...he's in the Donovan mold (they're still best friends) and he's done well for himself at South Alabama. They had a bit of a collapse at the end of this past season, but he was building a good program there.

I've followed South Alabama a bit because I'm a Richmond alum, and one of our point guards, Daon Merritt, transfered down there after having some issues at Richmond.

We shall see. It doesn't really matter much to me since I gave up on Razorback basketball years ago. He has a complete returning team to coach next year so hopefully his first year won't be his best year.

Now if we can just get rid of that cockroach of a football coach we have then we will be set.

Probably time to start a thread for the upcoming season, but I'll tack this news item onto the existing thread.

Skip Prosser died of a heart attack while jogging earlier today. Talk about a shocker. :(
