I think we have a problem coming up in November...
If the new Mac Pros come out in November...
If the new Mac Pros have powerful bto video cards...
What will we have to complain about?

Apple not using the latest 9800 Nvidia GPUs (likely they won't), Apple's processor options being more expensive than you could buy yourself if you could get Intel's OEM pricing (which you won't be able to), Apple's expensive RAM and hard drive options (can buy elsewhere anyway), not having 500GB hard drives as standard (which will probably the best $ to GB ratio around that time), no bluray/HD-DVD, Apple daring to make a profit on it. If people want to find fault they will ;)

Just for a quck bit of fun, I configured a Dell Precision 690 with Mac Pro Spec's

With 2.66GHZ Stock Specs (Configured with 1,000Watt Power Supply and XP)

Cost was

$3,601 (Difference was 2GB RAM, and NVS 285 Graphics)

8-Cores @ 3.0GHZ

Cost was

$5,461 (Difference was 2GB RAM, and NVS 285 Graphics)

Is the Mac Pro that much more a deal?

Just throwing this out there... When a MacPro update does arrive, would there be a bigger HD option like a 320gb as standard? Or do you think Apple would just include 2x250gigs? That way we could run mac on one and windows on the other instead of partitioning.

How about this scenario...

Apple releases the new Mac Pro in November and they are all Octo-core...then in January they finally release a 'desktop' Mac running a Quadcore and using descktop components...

Would anyone be pissed that they bought the new Mac Pro versus the Mac Desktop?

Hell no, I need the 8-cores for video editing ;)

Desktop all the way. Mac Pro is over kill cept for a very niche user. Unfortunately, all the other macs are sub par performers except for grand ma level usage (ok, maybe the kids too...and the wife).

Would take an 8-core over anything at this point. Need it for hardcore rendering and encoding. So has anyone seen this yet? What Jobs said...

... even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Does this mean he would do the same with MacPro users that buy now if a new one comes out in a month? Give back money for technology that is old? lol

Quadro Replacement Card?

Is this a possible replacement for the somewhat aging Quadro card?

FireGL.jpg

Nvidia already hinted that it'll be FX4600 and even possibly FX5600 cards several months ago. I know Apple can change their mind and the FireGL performance looks great, but I think it'll still be an Nvidia card on the high end.

Hell with that list I'd take the V3600.

Apple desperately needs the stock card to have two Dual-Link DVI Ports.

I agree, but I it's too expensive for a base card. It'll probably be some midrange sub $100 consumer card no doubt.

hehe I meant the top end offered in the imacs. ;) Where the two can be compared on similar platforms in osx. I really hope apple moves to Nvidia in the Mac Pro....the ATI's are teh suck this round.
The HD 2900 Pro would compete quite well against the 8600 GTS and 8800 GTS.

The iMac uses the Mobilty HD 2600XT as it it.

haven't the 2900 series cards been getting smoked pretty badly by the 8800 series?

Yes, you are correct.
But I'm not proud, I'll take the HD2900 XT. I'd prefer an 8800GTX or 8800 Ultra.
My guess is the HD2900 XT will be the high-end bto consumer card in the next Mac Pro.

The HD 2900 XT can hold it's own against the 8800 GTS but the GTX/Ultra models are another story.

The HD 2900 Pro would compete in the current gap filled by the the 7900 GS/7950 GT and X1950 Pro/XT.

Apple need to offer the 8800GTS (640 meg) minimum as the Mac Pro's midrange card. The HD 2900xt gets smoked by both the GTX (both 320 meg and 640 meg) and obviously the Ultra. I'm no CAD designer so I have no opinion on the high side FireGL vs. Quadro, and I will pretty much ignore the low end card. If the current 7300GT is any indication I am sure the low end card will remain "low-end".

Here's a quote from Steve's recent back-pedaling on the iPhone. I added some of my own "flair" to highlight our current situation.

Steve:
"If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon, unless of course you are waiting for a Mac Pro update. There has been neither an update nor a price cut in thirteen months and we are perfectly happy charging everyone 2006 prices for 2006 (outdated) hardware."

Seeing as how Steve buckled to "relentless pressure from angry iPhone users", I think we all need to turn up the heat on the Mac Pro feedback form and send a copy of it to Steve Jobs' e-mail address.

Click the link in my signature and once you are done providing your feedback to Apple, copy and paste your comments in a letter to Steve. I think he needs another wake-up call to remind him that his company's focus on the iPhone has caused casualties in both Mac Pro and Leopard development. Once he sees how many people are and have been waiting for an update and realizes all of those people are ready to drop $2500.00+ he may rightfully light a fire under the dev. team.

Click it! You know you want to. ;)

R600 = 2900

R630 = 2600

The 256-bit interface stands out.

You are thinking about the RV630. We are talking about the R630 chip, which basically is a R600 with half the memory interconnects (256Mbit instead of 512Mbit memory interface).

The entire range of the Radeon HD family should be really awesome in professional software. Rumours says that even the entry level V3600 (based on the RV630) does good against the Geforce 8800GTX chip...

Time will tell
