Who's throwing out January as the month now??

No one, I am just saying. I don't care. The Mac Pro is well beyond its life. I couldn't buy now even if I wanted to, because there will be something in my brain stopping me. Oh well.

Well as said earlier in this thread, a revision is unlikely to be released until Apple can get their hands on Harpertown/Stoakley-Seaburg etc. I'm sure they have other graphic cards waiting in the wings, but they want to release the lot as a package super-mega-ultra upgrade. They might as well make the upgrade huge since we've been waiting.

That said, the earliest they could make an announcement would be next month with delivery in November I would have thought. That's what I'm counting on and it wouldn't be inconceivable for this announcement to coincide with the Leopard release.

Apple has something up their sleeve. Maybe there will be an announcement at Paris Expo. Whatever was suppose to be at Paris Expo will probably be next Tuesday in UK. They probably got a bunch of stuff early and Intel gave them the go ahead or something for September 25th? Ah well, we shall see.

The fact that there has not been a mac pro update since the processor price drops at the end of July is in my opinion a very good sign, it's what I was hoping would happen. If Apple were planning the SS mac pro revision to occur in January, they would probably have done an "in between" update in August, so it could have had a respectable 5 month life. If we had recently seen a mac pro update then I would be sure that there would be no more updates until at least January. Now imagine that you are Apple, and expecting SS harpertown in October or November - you would not do an update in August or September despite component prices changing, because it would not be worthwhile just for a couple of months lifespan (and anyone who bought it would soon complain like the iPhone users did). This is what Apple have been doing since the July price drop - waiting a bit longer for Intel to deliver the new hardware.

I agree Greg, I am also relieved there hasn't been anything. It makes me think SS + Harpertown will be the next update.

And if Intel delivers this all by the 18th? All this stuff could arrive early right? Maybe that's why Apple has been pushing things up themselves? I'm guessing Paris Expo they will show off the new MP, but not ship til Leopard. Apple can get the stuff early for a one machine demo. ;)

I wouldn't count on it.

Agreed - I do not think this bump or change requires an announcement or pre-release. I believe if it happens it will just happen silently without fanfare. If it requires any announcement it includes a case redesign and won't show until January - I would like it to be silent and November - or in a perfect world - October.

It don't think it'll be silent, it'll surely be at least the same level of the iMac display, maybe tied in with a Leopard showing.

I Think It Will Be An In Depth Mac Pro SteveNote

I think differently. I think Steve will relish explaining Harpertown Stoakley-Seaburg in great depth in a long presentation either in Paris or in the Infinite Loop Auditorium. :)

He would simply tell how much it was faster than previous versions of the Mac Pro, not explain in detail what accounts for the differences. Granted, he will tell you the names of the new components but nothing technically.

If Steve speaks about that in Paris. Then he will hopefully say it ships with Leopard. No one would buy a MacPro if he talks about the new stuff. So let's hope Paris gets something cool this year.

Intel X38 by Mid-September

As some of you probably know Intel is launching chipset X38 by mid-september.
I know X38 has very little to do with Apple.
But I do not know that much about platforms, motherboards, chipsets.
The bright side is Intel seems to be right on schedule with their platforms, chipsets, and processors which is very good news for Stoakley, Seaburg, Harpertown.
The X38 certainly appears to have similarities to Seaburg.
Can I take from this that Stoakley and Seaburg can't be too far behind?

It looks to me that if Apple is looking to use 1600MHz FSB Harpertowns in the next Mac Pro then we are talking about January 2008 for the Mac Pro.
That will be good news for some, bad news for me!

This is from Digitimes (14Sep07):
"Intel will officially start delivering its X38 chipsets in mid-September, enabling motherboard makers to begin volume production of X38-based motherboards by the end of this month, according to sources at the makers.

The official launch of the X38 chipsets will also come in time to compete with AMD's forthcoming RD790 chipsets scheduled in November, the sources noted.

In addition to supporting 1333MHz FSB, DDR3-1333 memory, PCI Express 2.0 (PCIe) and dual PCIe x16 graphics slots, the X38 will also be the first core logic chipset using ISH (integrated heat spreader) technology, the sources noted.

While barely beginning shipments of the X38, however, Intel also plans to launch an upgrade version of the chipset, the X48, by the end of the year with motherboard makers to begin delivering X48 motherboards to shelves in the first quarter of 2008, according to sources close to Intel's roadmap.

The X48 eventually will come with the same chip design as the X38 but will support 1600MHz FSB and DDR3-1600 memory, the sources stated.

Board makers will not be required to change any design work of X38-based motherboards since the X38 and X48 chipsets will use the same PCB (printed circuit board), said the sources, noting that the X38 could also support 1600MHz FSB and DDR3-1600 memory after overclocking.

Sources at Intel Taiwan, however, stated that the company would decide whether to launch an upgrade version of X38 chipset after evaluating the market reaction to the X38-based motherboards."

See, if Steve in Paris made a statement saying there will be no MacPro updates until January, then I will buy now.

That makes no sense. If you have a confirmed date why the heck wouldn't you wait? Especially if specs were given. I don't see why you don't buy now since you have no date and no indication.

If Steve says tomorrow: New Mac Pro is January, you better believe I would wait and feel great about it because I KNOW it is coming (unless they delay like Leopard).

Oh well. I still have my lawn chair open and I am sitting in it.

Eidorian, that card looks sick!

Well if it is going to be a show then it is going to be in January. The other items on the slate are too soon and I do not believe that there would be a special event for the Pro as the reach of it is far less than the laptops, iMac and iPods.

I think I may need something to tide me over afterall...

Ok, yea, you're right, I would wait. That and I would be breaking my "I'm waiting" pledge. :)

Crossfire in a Mac Pro?
Why do you like it except for the fact it is newer technology?
The bus width is a bit small (128 bits).
ATI cheats on the shaders but is still only has 120 compared to 320 for the HD2900 XT.
The bandwidth is an unimpressive 35.2 GB/s.
The 65nm process and 1024 MiB max memory are nice however.
Why?
