There Is No 80 Watt 3.2 GHz Harpertown - Only 120 Watt

According to the story (which may be wrong) Apple is scarfing up X5482 processors. Why would Apple prefer a 120W Harpertown over an 80W Harpertown?
Speed. There is no 80 watt 3.2 GHz Harpertown. But Apple already knows how to cool 120 watt Clovertowns so it's no big whoop. Plus I think Harpertowns can scale down their wattage consumption according to their loads can't they?
1600MHz FSB sounds good, doesn't it?
Yeah, if the price of the faster 2GB RAM sticks doesn't put us all in the poor house. ;)

FB DDR3 Is Purely Speculation By Me

Wait, what?
Just speculating - not knowing. I keep reading occasional posts that say DDR3 is a possibility. But I have no clue about the veracity of such a scenario. I don't see Fry's selling any DDR3 sticks nor motherboards yet. So it's not likely this round. Sorry Eidorian. Didn't mean to alarm you or anyone else.

Where's Aiden when we need him?

I bet these ship with DDR2. It's not like they still won't be smoking.

I'll load up with DDR3 when the prices drop. Figure 4GB should be okay in the meantime.

Multi, what is the relationship between amount of RAM and speed of video rendering? How much will DDR3 speed up that rendering over DDR2?

Make RAM Disk Has Got Me Curious

I don't know either answer. My idea is to run a large RAM disk and do all the crushing inside that for maximum speed. Leopard should let Make RAM Disk go beyond its 4GB Tiger limit, although with 4 or 5 GB of RAM I can only make it 2.2 GB max. I figure if I max the RAM then I can still run a 10GB RAM disk to create DL DVD images with Toast 8 while retaining 6GB for other things.

OR... Maybe Apple will release a new MacPro October 16th. Maybe there will be a special media event where they announce the ship date of Leopard, then say, "But we aren't done yet. How would you like to run Leopard.... ON THIS!" Bam, new MacPro. Watch that happen on a Leopard ship announce date.

I still think Steve is going to surprise us with revelations of Leopard features he called "TOP SECRET" last August. So far I haven't heard him make one reference to that moment since then. And I haven't seen anything jump out as if they were what he meant back then either.

You know he loves to surprise us with the unexpected. Video nano is a perfect example. 160GB Classic Video iPod is another.

Right, there's no doubt in my mind we will def. get another media event for the hype of Leopard. Can't wait to hear what the "Top Secret" things will be. Cause your right, the top 10 things mentioned already don't seem like "Top Secret." Then maybe a huge surprise of the MacPro. It's gotta happen.

Listen to how sick I am.

Last weekend I got tired of working on my laptop (too slow) so I decided to go ahead and order a PC with the kind of parts that would make a teenager wet his pants.

I have to admit being able to choose the components was fairly exciting and I was looking forward to being able to overclock the new beast. Something that I haven't really messed with in the past 8 years or so.

Anyhow, a friend of mine knocked some sense into me last night and I am sending everything back - including a 24" NEC LCD Monitor. If apple doesn't come out with the new LED backlit displays, I will upgrade to the 26" :)

Just thought that I would share. I am in dire desperation of a new computer. Apple hurry the #$#$ up!

I don't think there are even going to be DDR3 FB-DIMMs.
I haven't seen any development of DDR3 FB-DIMM.

Not when you keep taking on projects and having them pile up on a *****ty G4 that's compression time is 10 hours for 1 hour. I have projects due by the end of the year and need something faster. I can not wait until January. So it better come out by November.

Dude, buy a dell ;)

Any chance that apple would ever release the new 3.0Ghz extreme CPU's as a single CPU setup with an additional socket on the motherboard?

These new systems are going to be stupid expensive if they only are releasing quad core setups as 2 CPU's.

i.e. 2 x 4 cores.

I will bet anything that they offer three or four systems at roughly the same price points.

What's "Stupid Expensive"? You Mean Like $60K For A 20 mpg Mercedes Benz?

What's your definition of "stupid expensive"?

If you're not prepared to spend $4-5K on one of these tricked out, you're in the wrong line although entry level will be the same $1999 that it's always been.

So if dual 3.2 GHz Harpertowns are the top end, what will be the other lower options? Anyone care to guess at price points?

Dual quadcore setups wont be stupidly expensive as the processors are of similar pricing to the current ones used. Yes there may be a chance that Apple offer a single CPU system, though I find it unlikely it will be with a spare socket. Yorkfield is mentioned which is a single socket CPU and could be used on a system board worth half of what is used in MPs. Apple adding a single quadcore CPU workstation with similar form factor to the MP is logical.

2.8GHz for $2,499, 3.2GHz for $1200-$1600 more and maybe 2.33GHz as a "downgrade". Low end is harder to guess at as there is no 1600MHz FSB option.
