My idea of the new Mac Pro:

Base Mac Pro - $2500

$900? - 2.8ghz E5462 Harpertown 12MB cache 1600mhz fsb
$100 - 16x double-layer Superdrive
$400 - nVidia 8800gts 640mb
$150 - 500GB Western Digital SE16 high performance hard drive, 16mb cache
$400 - 4gb fb-dimm (2x2) 667mhz RAM
$50 - Apple Keyboard
$50 - Mighty Mouse
$130 - Leopard
$80 - iLife ‘08
$240 - other (case etc...)

This is a question for anyone who knows..but this brought it to really make me wonder. the chart and prices for harpertown, that was posted here a few times now, are those prices for one processor, hence 4 cores, or two proccesors, 8 cores? bc if they are for one processor, the guy I quoted needs to double his price for the processor, but IDK

Well it would be $ 797 x 2 = $1594.00

But then you need to add the "Apple Tax" factor to it, probably throw in another 200-400 on top of that, since they price all of their components into the stratosphere...

Only on the upgrades, as all workstation vendors do as there is alot of money in industries that use such computers. Whatever GPU or hard drive the new ones come with if they have dual quadcore 2.8GHz or 2.83GHz processors for $2499 they are going to be a great deal for what you get.

I wonder if they'll simplify and take it down to 2 or 3 procs, but maybe have separate Good, Better, and Best like they used to have instead of just 1 standard and you have to CTO from there. Or have a lower end 1, like a 2.3 or 2.6, then a standard higher end, than maybe an Ultimate with more RAM and a better video card than the default. Would be nice to have 1 under $2000, perhaps even nearer to $1500 like they used to, then they could go up from there.

And hopefully we can buy the new video cards separately for those of us who already have MacPros, for what I hope won't be too high of a price.

On a side note, you would think Apple would want to release a new MacPro by November 12. If they were to wait until January, the chips would be more than 2 months old by then and other people would be using them before Apple. So I can definetely see an update with Leopard or by 11/12.

Just Curious,

Would anyone care if the Mac went to an all SATA interface setup.

Don't know how many of you are running IDE Hard Drives, but considering the awful performance with 2 IDE Burners, I think this would be a nice change to see.

I wouldn't mind keeping at least one IDE cable in there so that I can add the DVD Burner that I bought awhile ago.

eBay it...

Now that SATA optical drives are common and cheap, there's little need for legacy garbage like IDE on the mobo.

And, considering Apple's history of dumping older generation connections, I'd be surprised if Apple didn't consider "no IDE" to be a feature.

Public release of Harpertown.

Why should that be of importance to Apple and the Mac Pro? I've read here that Intel is already manufacturing the Harpertown chips at full production from 2 factories in the US. Surely they're now in the hands of the major manufacturers. I don't think Apple qualifies for "public" release. You and I might. I would assume that when Leopard is released, so will a faster Mac Pro. What's the point of advertising a faster OS without a machine which can fully demonstrate those claims?

Oh I fully agree. I can see another media event coming where they give us the official release date of Leopard and demoing the "Top Secret" features on a new updated MacPro.

Surely there are no "Top Secret" features, or they would have had to release them to developers in recent pre-release builds of Leopard. I think Steve mentioned that secret features were still to come because he realized the 10 new features he was talking about at the time were mostly rubbish. He probably hoped the OS X developers would come up with something between then and release, but due to iPhone etc they have struggled to finish Leopard at all. Bet you a bar of fruit and nut that when it's released there are no secret features worth mentioning.

Of course there won't be any "Top Secret" features. But it builds hype and the only people that will remember about it will be die hards that post here. Which, and I may be going to on a limb here, will buy Leopard no matter what!

With these new processors coming out, will I be able to pop out my old CPU in my current Mac Pro and put these new processors in, or will they have different pin configurations?

I'm sure just reading a few posts before yours would have easily answered your question.

It's still using LGA 771 though.
