Doesn't mean they are electrically the same.

Naturally. However, generally pin configurations are changed just for that purpose (different electrically). Intel doesn't want someone sticking a CPU into an older board that has a different electrical configuration as it may not give favorable results, to thwart that, they change the pin configuration.

While it is possible they are different in the way that they interface, it is exceedingly unlikely for the reason explained above.

Not really, Pentium M (as well as modern Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, both mobile) and Pentium 4 shared the same number of pins, although one was called Socket 479 and one was called 478. They both have 478 pins, which are electrically different.

This also holds true with Core 2 Duo and Pentium D in regards to socket 775. Newer boards with updated VRM supported both but not older boards.

This post made me tired... two weeks ago I was working on a 1.66 Ghz dual core HP. And today I am working on an 3.0ghz 8 core Mac....

I am running Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Burning a disc and updating my blog.

I have seen that funny little color wheel spin only once so far. And that was nice to see, just so I knew what to look for if I was working my computer too hard.

I didn't know I was waiting for the SS but my workflow and sanity has paid for the MacPro in only two short weeks.

nVidia G92 moved up to October 29th

For what it's worth, Digitimes (yeah yeah I know..) is reporting that nVidia is moving up its launch of the G92 GPUS to October 29th to compete with ATI's 2950 PRO.

I'm sure there's no chance in hell of seeing the G92 in the upcoming Mac Pro's, but it's fun to speculate. The G92 is a single-slot solution. Haven't seen much in the way of performance numbers yet.

Nvidia is bringing forward the launch date of its upcoming GeForce 8800 GT (G92) GPU to October 29 from the original November 12, targeting AMD's new Radeon HD 2950PRO (RV670) as the major competitor, according to sources at graphics card makers.

With G92 and RV670 having a tight performance/price ratio, Nvidia's earlier launch should give the company an advantage in the market, noted the sources.

In addition to G92, Nvidia will also launch the G98 GPU to replace the GeForce 8600 series, however the launch date has not yet been set, added the sources.

Nvidia was invited to comment on this report, but did not respond by the time of publication

This doesn't sound good.

Apple is set to introduce updated MacBook laptops following the release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard later this month, sources report.
[...]
Apple is not expected to update the MacBook Pro before the end of the year, and sources at this time don't expect any other Mac hardware to see a revision before the holidays.
:(

There are no rumors and the MacPro is not selling or generating revenue at the rate of Apple's iProducts and MacBooks.

Well, I'm definitely gonna wait for Leopard before I buy. We never know, by then, maybe Harpertown will be in the bad boys with a silent update or a better rumor will be out.

And the MacPros aren't selling because we aren't getting our money's worth with the price drops and us knowing Apple purchased the new Penryn processors.

Apple has "pre-booked" all the top (3.2GHz) Penryn bins for this year.

Actually, does that (title above) mean that Apple would only be interested in replacing the high end 8-Core MacPro and still leave the 4-Core untouched? Or did Apple pre-book all the new Penryn's to update the whole line?

Highly unlikely they won't replace the whole line with dual quad core processors.

It means very little when the Inquirer reports on what it admits is a rumour.

https://www.macrumors.com/2007/10/05/apple-buying-up-high-end-penryn-processors/

The Inquirer reports on rumors circulating around Tokyo about Apple's interest in high end Penryn processors for their upcoming Mac Pros.

I don't see how it means very little. We all form our knowledge of anything Apple from rumors. That is what ths site is about. Unless you are going to say no rumor has any merit, I don't think we should start picking and choosing which ones we like and don't like.

I think the phrase is "consider the source" - and when the Inquirer calls it a rumour I think that calling it fact (as you did) would be risky.

I don't remember calling it a fact. Could you please point that out to me.

No. When Aiden shoots down the one thread we have to hold onto, the only hint of an Oct/Nov MP release, I am really worried that we are looking at a MWSF release.

Aiden doesn't know anything more than we do, and I don't take his opinion very seriously. Regardless, all I know is the Mac Pro will be released when it is released and I won't be buying one until that happens. Of course, I hope it is soon, in fact I hope it is this month. But who knows? Definetly no Aiden. So I wouldn't too much about what Aiden says.

As it stands the current offering is COMPLETELY overpriced. It would be rediculous for them NOT to do an update. It would also be nice to start seeing more options from third party vendors i.e. EVGA producing NVidia cards for apple.

"Apple has "pre-booked" all the top (3.2GHz) Penryn bins for this year."

You didn't qualify the statement, such as saying "Rumour that Apple has...". Therefore, the sentence is presumed to be a statement of fact.

Come on now. Can't we all just get along???

Probably not. But that tidbit of information has popped up on more than one website by now. Let's keep focus people. Focus on the rumors of a new Mac Pro. That is, after all, why we are all here. And considering how long some of us have waited, I think we troopers deserve to cling onto every rumor that comes along until it is either proven true or false. There hasn't been any inkling of a Mac Pro rumor until recently. Don't take the wind out our sails Aiden. We've come this far.

Bet you dollars to donuts Apple has pre-booked them all.

And we're all gonna get excited.........until.........
...........they screw up the video card options.

I was simply replying to the question about a "fact" - no hostility....

I'm only talking about the "pre-book" rumour - not doubting that the long overdue MacPro upgrade will be Penryn/Stoakley ("SS" is redundant).

In my opinion, it would be unlikely that Intel would dedicate all production to only one of their OEMs.

You can bet that Dell and HP will want them for their gaming and workstation lines. Intel wouldn't want to p#ss off companies that have the AMD option....

The "Apple exclusive" 3.0GHz Clovertown turned out to be not so special - the other makers passed on the older hot 150 watt quads and waited for the faster 120 watt chips. MM's term "FrankenMac" is appropriate.

If we do get a new Pro in November, I wonder will there be supply issues with limited stock. Maybe a few weeks waiting time? Just throwing it out there – wasn't there some delay on Macbook Pros this year?
