Dont think new mac pro is coming out this week. The soonest would be in November following Intel's press release.

It would only be logical to assume as long as that Leopard countdown is hogging the front page we will not see an announcement for the new Mac Pro.

I agree with others. I think we will see new Mac Pros in november. I doubt they would wait till Macworld. If they do then I will be very disappointed as I want my MP before xmas. :(

Well they could. But they never do on a Tuesday after a holiday. They need a day to prepare the release or PR has meetings all day when they get back from a holiday on Tuesday or whatever. So it puts them one more day out. Historically any national holiday Monday puts the announcements to Wednesday without fail. So it appears to be a rule.

Kinda like the new iPods. Released on a Wednesday. That Monday was Labor Day.

I wonder what the Mac Pro & Power Mac threads will look that after the release of this new Pro. Will it be filled with complaints about the new machines? I'm half tempted to wait a week to see how people are finding the build quality, but I expect it to be very good.

I wish they'd hurry up and announce this hardware. :(

It's easier to wait when I have a sure date to wait for. Currently I spend each day tossing up whether I can keep using my Macbook Pro or whether I should be buying a current gen MP...

If they retire the old PowerMac G5 case, then there's more chance of initial build quality issues.

If they put a new Stoakley motherboard in the same old case, then the only worry would be Rev 0 motherboard issues (but you'll have that worry regardless).

Did the current Mac Pro ever get out of revision zero over the last almost two years?

You can almost be certain that the MP has undergone revisions to the hardware. The common usage of "revision" in the Mac community is really a misnomer--we look for functional change, while actual revisions are very often minor component or board layout changes.

Right. But motherboard manufacturers also turn out revisions of hardware. I was wondering if the main component, the motherboard, is still a Rev. 0 or a Rev. X?

(a quick peak inside by one of the more recent mac pro purchasers would work)

You'll probably never hear from me again, until I'm ready to buy a MacPro 50% faster than an 8-core. Well, I would actually post one more time saying how fantastic the new machine is, then disappear for awhile. ;)

I have a feeling I'll be complaining about the video cards.
If Apple uses the RV670 as bto video card I will be extremely disappointed. Unless by slim chance it is available as crossfire.
If the G92 is available as bto, I'll be fairly happy.
If the 8800GTX or 8800GTS 640MB is available, I'll be ecstatic!

Harpertown compatibility with currect Mac Pros

I have a friend who is asking if he can drop a 1600MHz FSB Harpertown into his current Mac Pro.
Would it work?
I assume there would be a performance loss?

Why Do It Yourself For More Money Than It Will Cost You To Sell & Buy The Next One?

There would be a bank account loss too. It's not financially feasible to do. Will be much less expensive to sell the one he has and buy the next one.

Not to mention the advantages of the Stoakley platform. There I mentioned it.

Loss of Applecare protection.

Probably work, but it would run at the fsb of the old chips. As long as their pin compatible.

Why couldn't he buy one of the 1333MHz FSB Penryns anyway? They will be
cheaper too, but what multimedia said is right. Probably won't be worth doing for some time.

It makes no sense to me either. I'm just the messenger.

Or the fact that we do not know if the current Mac Pro actually has support for Penryn.
