Intel Opens First High-Volume 45nm Microprocessor Manufacturing Factory

New $3 Billion Facility to Produce Processors with Intel 45nm Hafnium-based High-k Metal Gate Transistors

CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 25, 2007 – Production of a new generation of microprocessors for PCs, laptops, servers and other computing devices officially began today inside of Intel Corporation's first high-volume 45 nanometer (nm) manufacturing factory in Chandler, Ariz.

Called "Fab 32," the $3 billion factory will use Intel's innovative 45nm process technology based on Intel's breakthrough in "reinventing" certain areas of the transistors inside its processors to reduce energy leakage.

The 45nm transistors use a Hafnium-based high-k material for the gate dielectric and metal materials for the gate, and are so small that more than 2 million can fit on the period at the end of this sentence. Millions of these tiny transistors will make up Intel's faster, more energy efficient lead- and halogen-free processors for PCs, laptops and servers, as well as ultra low-power processors for mobile Internet and consumer electronic devices, and low-cost PCs.

The first of the company's 45nm processors is scheduled to be introduced on Nov. 12.

Booyah! thanks Aiden, you made my day.

You're easy considering that we knew that (November 12th for Intel to ship) some time ago. :D

I'm waiting for Steve to say, "And they're shipping today, so go to Apple.com and get your new 8-core Penryn Mac Pros!"

Nehalem vs. Penryn

I saw on an earlier page that Nehalem might be on the market only 6-8 months after Penryn, together with some vague hints that this architecture might be noticeablely faster, I can't find any figures, I'm wondering if I should wait to purchase.
I know this sounds insane to some, and I would definitely like to upgrade from my G5 tower, but it's kind of a one shot deal. I have the money now, but as a grad student next yr. I won't be making enough to flip continously. Also I need any mac tower to last 3-4 yrs., as the last several have.
Hope this makes sense, I just don't want to bite if there's a significant upgrade in 6 months that is 50%+ faster.

If you need it now (a.k.a. Penryn) get it.

You aren't going to see a big performance increase in 6 months. Look more towards a year and another 5-20% based on what apps you are running.

Need is sort of a non starter, what I have now is useable and as an arts student I don't need a mac tower. I will get one anyway, as i have in the past, because I love using them and I can justify it to my self with video work (and to my fiance and family through being their tech support person).

That's good to know, I'll definitely take the plunge under those circumstances. I had just seen vague things online such as this architecture change being the biggest thing since ~96 and vague statements of a massive speed increase. Thanks for the help.

Well, since Nehalem will be 8 cores per socket, in a year that Mac Pro could have 16 cores.

I would expect more than a 5% improvement ;)

But anyway, with Apple on the Intel bandwagon you'll be able to see what's coming and when. There will always be "something better" on the horizon.

You just have to decide when you've reached the pain threshold on the current system - and buy then.

Well it's still going to be around a year before Nehalem and then even longer (2009) before 8 core processors are being shipped. I think it depends more on what AMD are doing than anything.

Only 19 hours until the Leopard is unleashed. Soooo tempting to get a Mac Pro tomorrow. Must, hold, on, and wait, til, November.

We're assuming 'til November for Apple to sell Penryn-based systems.

They wouldn't wait for 5 months after everyone else has Penryns, like they did with Clovertowns.

They wouldn't, would they?

Oh hell no. By January Penryn will be 2 months old, and other companies will be using them already leaving Apple behind. Apple wouldn't want to be behind. Hoping that it arrives in November, I buy either way. November 13th, if nothing and no good rumors, then I purchase a current MacPro.

Been doing some thinking. With that rumor earlier this month stating that Apple would have some more "announcements during the last full week of October." What if, WHAT IF, Intel did give Apple the go ahead to announce a new MacPro, but Apple is just waiting until Tuesday October 30th for the announcement? That way it doesn't interfere with Leopards release for the weekend? Let's all hope for an announcement 10/30 for 11/12 shipping. :)

Interesting, but *this* is the last full week of October. Next Wed is 31 Oct, Thu is 1 Nov.

In other words, the rumour was false - it didn't happen....

It might still be possible for it to happen Friday, but it would be very surprising if Apple decided to do a hardware announcement that would dilute the impact of the 10.5 release...

Oh, right, last "full" week. Welp, it was worth a shot, and still maybe something could happen. We never know. ;):D

from the ADC thread

"ok so the update failed... When the installer stated up again it said i had to erase my HD... I canceled the install and choice the start up disk.. Then the computer restarted and the gray screen with the apple logo came up... And then nothing, the computer turned off.
Ever time I start the computer I get the gray screen with the apple logo and then the computer turns off..."

Enjoy...

Definitely worth waiting for a later build for the new Mac Pro.
