I c. Isn't it better to get 8800GT?

Depends on how you want to look at it.
The HD3850 may give the best performance for the money but it is not nearly as powerful as the 8800 GT.
The HD3870 is more powerful but it too can not put up the numbers of the 8800 GT.
The HD3850 and HD3870 are probably quieter and have less power consumption than the 8800 GT.
Oh yes, the HD3850 and HD3870 cost less than the 8800 GT.

Haven't seen the benchmarks yet, but I bet the 8800 GT beats it like a red headed step child. Nvidia's been on a roll the last few years.

*edit* Just saw the ones above, ati's looking alright, but I do hope they offer one of the high end cards from nvidia.

I agree. Somehow, AMD and ATI (now one company) are at least one generation behind Intel and Nvidia. That said, I would definately go for 8800GT and I hope it will be included in the update or at least BTO option for reasonable price.

sure the 3870 comes close to the 8800gt but the problem is the expected price difference is so far not really there

cheapest 3870 from local retailer 213 euro
cheapest 8800GT from local retailer 219 euro

6 euro difference for getting a 10-15% faster card and better drivers

the 3850 while being great price performance (lowest price 163 euro)it is too limited on the memory side (256 is slowly running into limitations already) or when specced with 512 mb ram is too close to the better 3870/8800gt (cheapest i found: 194 euro or so)

we will have to see how prices on those cards develop.. currently it's either the 3850 or for 25% bucks more the 25-30% faster 8800 gt ... the prices on the 3870 are simply to close to the nvidia
gonna be interesting how prices develop after christmas

on noise/power consumption .. as far as i read in terms of noise gt8800 and the atis are fairly equal .. and in power consumption ati is better at idle while nvidia is better at max. load

3870 - US$219

8800GT - US$249 (CompUSA this week) - US$319 (Online)

well then it might be worth it .. though i'm heavily surprised by the online price ... did you only look at available cards/shipping status ?

(that said i just found a 3870 for 204 euro at another retailer.. too bad that the cheapest 8800gt also costs 207 there .. and the msot expensive 8800 does cost 248)
not that any of those cards is currently available anyway ;)

I'm ready... To be let down again. I'm going for January now, if it happens before then, I'm all for it.
I guess we all are. Anyway, I decided that if they don't update this week then I will buy Premium Bonds worth new MP and hope that I will get lucky. :)

The only thing that will be updated tomorrow is that we will go from monday to tuesday.

I give up

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to apple
not even a price drop wow.

I think were going to be very disappointed. If Apple leave it until January, they are not going to have two major upgrades to the system design within the space of 10 to 12 months.

With Nehelem (sp) coming out in 2H08, I'm not expecting anything fantastic, when they finally get around to doing it.

Or, they will do the same to Nehalem. Wait few months and then release so they don't break the trend of pissing ppl off. :(

Wow, those prices are just beyond the pale...248 Euros?

Hehe, wait till the apple prices come out. It'll be like 350 euros, much like the 90 dollar x1900 is sold for almost 400 U.S.

Yeah... You have to factor in the "3D Reality Distortion Field", telling you that this video card is not overpriced. In this case, it would be an x1900xtRDF.

That's probably one of the most absurd cases of Apple Tax I've ever seen.

Find me one person who thinks (today) that an x1900xt is worth $400.00 because I'd like to meet them (and sell them a bridge).

Maybe the update will be tomorrow, as we are approaching the mystical, magical 2000 post count on this neverending thread.

The higher priced 8800GT models (US$309-319) appear to be shipping. There are US$269 - 289 ones but they're perpetually out of stock.

The 3850 and 3870 are on sale for $179 and $219 respectively online.

I agree that the X1900XT should have been price dropped...but it's far from the first time this has happened.

We had the same issues with both Apple and ATI going back to the original Radeon Mac Edition (the Radeon 7000) and even before that I remember crazy pricing on the Voodoo cards - the Mac edition never got the aggressive price drops that the PC cards did.

Don't forget, whats available for consumers and whats available for manufactuers are generally independent of one-another. Apple may well have had a deal with NVIDIA or ATI to purchase a % of the production bin to allow a "now shipping" announcement and have been hoarding up stock while the consumer model is perpetually out of stock to us.

I doubt it. Apple does their own boards (at least they subcontract for them), so unless there is a real production capacity issue with the GPUs Apple won't effect the supply much if at all.
