I could not quite figure this out, either
Not sure. I wondered about this, too. It is because the 5000X board is only rated for 1333 (even though people have been able to push it further with overclocking)? That is the only board option they seem to have. Have they just not gotten in the other cpu parts (rated at 1600mhz) from Intel? I do not think I could have convinced my client that the price was worth it (the lowest cost part that I see would be the E5462 at 2.8ghz, at is listed a bit less than double the cost, I think), but I know some people would like the option.
Anyway, I have a UPS shipping number now, so that confirms it is not just some online store trick to get pre-orders. Again, as someone pointed out rightly, this seems to be a very small on-line vendor. And they only have certain of the new parts, and no where do I see a place to just buy the proc itself. If I would have thought, I would have ordered two procs with this system and just pulled the 2nd oem cpu out and used it in another application. When I bought the last round of workstation procs, they were the X5355s, I think, and they were around $1100. That was less than a year ago. These E5430s (same clock speed, more 2mb more cache for each pair of cores; apparently this first had an unlocked multiplier, but none of the boards I put it in had this tweak ability) lists at under $500. Gods how I love the way Intel/AMD and Nvidia/ATI are clubbing each other!
Perhaps Apple plans to use the 1600 MHz FSB Xeons, at http://www.pogolinux.com/ they offer only the versions for 1333 MHz front side bus...
