I know but I really think that the MP has become the red haired child of the line up and they really could give a sh@t about how long it has gone unchanged. I bet they have NAB in their sights. Regardless of when the chips come out Apple has shown us that they release their product when they seem fit to.

If MWSF is coming up and the MP has not been updated in 512 days, well who cares because this is a consumer show and we have a stupid Ultra Portable to make headlines with. Lets save that for a few more months until NAB, that way the GFX card will truly be out of date.

We are WAAAAAAAAAAYYY beyond the graphics card being truly out of date.

By the way, the 9th of this month will be the x1900xt's 2 year anniversary.

Hey all! [First post!]

I have been following this topic for some time now and it seems counter-intuitive to not announce a Mac Pro refresh. Look at what we know:
  • The system design is over 500 days old [its due].
  • The graphics cards are reaching EOL [they're due].
  • Apple has reportedly purchased a WHOLE BUNCH of Harpertown procs and Stoakley chips [to panel Steve's office?].
  • PC systems are being introduced at CES with these chips [Steve likes to be one upped?]
No, a Mac Pro that should have been announced in November has to be in the works for Macworld. Every PC maker and their mother will be showing off Penryn/X48 kit at CES. A Tablet Mac and Itunes movie deals will not compete with that.

Just my $0.02.

Anyone who is still looking at it rationally should see that it is almost certain macworld will be when they get refreshed/updated/redesigned.

Yeah, well, the problem is that anyone who was looking at it rationally would have seen that it was almost certainly November 2007 when they would get refreshed/updated. And anyone who was looking at it rationally would also have seen that it was almost certainly Summer 2007 when they would get refreshed/updated. It's repetitive enough to drive a person slightly irrational.

I thought for certain it would be November. I was wrong. I hate being wrong!

I like the explanation given by the French web site MacBidouille. They say the reason for the delay is Apple is in the process of reworking Leopard to work with the instructions of Penryn and especially with SSE4 instructions.
MacBidouille believes MWSF will be the launch date.

Don't get everyones hopes up, I have a bad feeling about this.

Truth is I am worried about it also.
So, I been thinking about it. What to do if the new Mac Pro is not announced at MWSF?
No ifs, ans, or buts, I HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW!
Answer: (albeit an expensive answer)

I will buy the current Mac Pro.
I will trade it in on the Nehalem Mac Pro which may come out toward the end of the year.
Nehalem Mac Pro: very powerful processors and very powerful video cards.
By then the video cards will be so advanced, so powerful, that even Apple won't be able to screw-up the choices.

Do you wanna bet on that video card bit?

This is true, but if you want to base a buying decision on roadmaps and guesses it's all you can go on.

Looking back I can certainly see why they didn't come before now, if they don't come at macworld it will be rather puzzling.

Yes, me too, I will be buying on 1/15 no matter what, unless they announce and shipping in Feb. or something.

I know you said "may" come out toward the end of the year, but, with all this hype about Penryn arriving November 2007, and now hopefully arriving in a couple of weeks, don't you think Nehalem will have the same type of delay? I could see Nehalem arriving in a 2009 MacPro with Apples history now.

Do you wanna bet on that video card bit?
Oh man, that's like free money right there. There's not a chance in hell that Apple won't mess up the video cards.

The Nehalem base card will be something on par with an Apple ][ 80 column expansion card except it'll have a giant heatsink for no reason. Mid-range will be an underclocked 2900XT (retail, $499) that curiously has a 3GB firmware so you can't flash a Windows card to work. The high end will be some bizarro-world nvidia thing that can only be used with a special build of Kinemac and gets 4fps in World of Warcraft due to cornball drivers.

You heard it here first.

Edit: and the shame of it all is that I'll buy it and be thankful. :)

Absolutely. My confidence in Apple has just about hit rock bottom.

The greatest mistake with going with x86 is that now consumers can do an apple's to apple's comparison. yeah, I know, it's a pun. But if anyone has an alternative colloquial, I'll use it.

I agree with that to an extent, BUT, maybe there is another reason why they are waiting so long. It might have nothing to do with the processor.

Probably graphics and making it work with Leopard the right way. Also, I would think that Nehalem would be a silent update down the road with just a processor change.

Nehalem will require a new systemboard and new memory so it won't likely be just a silent update, with AMD slacking off it may be WWDC 2009 before we see it in Mac Pros.

Nehalem will be introduced with the Caneland Platform. Motherboard with 4 sockets etc, will be fun to see one of those fully.
