The fact that 9to5 hasn't had anything to say concerns me. There really is nothing going on here in terms of rumors since November. I am starting to think that they are having some sort of production problems, either in terms of hardware or OS development.

I think it is honestly all our fault. We have been so anxious for a new system, so annoyed that they haven't updated the system we want so much that we missed something important along the way.

Mac Pro

We all thought it stood for Mac Professional.
We were wrong.

Mac Procrastinate

or perhaps even

Mac Prolong

I think had we understood that from the beginning then we wouldn't have gotten so frustrated with the lack of updates and them keeping prices of components at the same level as if they weren't outdated.

Although we shouldn't expect them to lower the prices on hardware. I mean it's not like they have lowered the prices on anything else they have released. I mean would you expect them to lower the price on like an iPhone after upgrading components only a short time after the initial release? Oh wait....

Alrighty, we have a possible rumor on AppleInsider:

Final Cut Pro group meet provides clues to Apple's MWSF plans

When a collection of Final Cut Pro user groups assemble to hold a meeting at Macworld San Francisco later this month, Apple will have a surprise presentation for its guests, AppleInsider has learned.

The January 16th gathering, which follows a day after Apple chief Steve Jobs' Macworld keynote, will feature "something super secret" from the Mac maker, according to the announcement.

Despite the nature of the group, the Apple unveiling is unlikely to include an update to the Final Cut Studio video production suite, which was updated in April and has rarely been updated during the San Francisco show in the past.

Historically, Apple has at times used professional audiovisual industry gatherings to discuss its high-end computers, including the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and Xserve.

I would guess new software--perhaps a preview

What were the rumours like for the current Mac Pro?

From the mouth of newbs... :)

This newb has been in this business probably longer than you have been alive, kiddo. Plus, I run my own technology sites and have my sources as well. We have Penryn/X48 in our labs already along with Phenom/RV790. I have been following this thread as a lurker for months now and felt that the level of paranoia merited me stepping in and giving my opinion.

Do you know the self-definition of a pessimist? They refer to themselves as "realists". I refer them to psychologists for treatment of manic depression. You can nay-say all you want, but the evidence points to a Macworld announcement for this platform. Apple will not neglect their cash cows (lets face it, their highest margins are on these boxes) for the sake of teeny-bopper toys. The show is Macworld. Not Ipodworld or AppleTVworld.

Also, I predict a refresh of the Cinema displays to go with it. Don't be surprised if Steve jumps over to DisplayPort from DVI (get that HD goodness without having to pay royalties - and eat margins).

You see etrigan63, some seem to think the margins are on the other products. The iMacs, Macbooks, etc. I am glad you point out that is not the case. The fact that they can hack off $500 on a Mac Pro for the ADC members suggests they have a good amount of wiggle room for these things.

Welcome to the forums btw. :D:apple:

Phenomen?

As apple has discontinued Shake, they dont have a digital compostion/sfx program anymore in their lineup.

Perhaps they are gonna run a presentation of Phenomen on a new MP...?

Edit: For the kex´ses. Would they work under 10.4.11 or would you need the 10.5 to run them?
I mean,if the drivers for new gfx cards would emerge, would they be Leopard only?

Actually both G92 and RV670 works in 10.5.2 ;)
Check it out here :D
You can even use the kext from 10.5.2 in 10.5.1 to get G92 working.

Please excuse my ignorance but...
Aren't they talking about Leopard running in a PC?
If so, then they are talking about PC cards working with Leopard in a PC, right?

Is there anything implied here that makes you believe the G92 and/or RV670 may be available for the next Mac Pro?
Thx

Yes, they are found in text strings inside kexts of the new ADC seeded 10.5.2.

But yes, they are using it on PCs but the kext are from 10.5.2.

Looks like MacBoudille was right after all. 10.5.2 coming to support the new Penryn Mac Pros at MacWorld. Finally a truly substantial piece of evidence!

I'd say that the Mac Pro rollout at MacWorld is pretty much a lock now. Can't wait!

Yes, I was thinking the same thing.

Well, don't know if I would go that far but the prospects are sure looking better. :)

Excuse my ignorance, but these cards that it looks like they're going to use...

How do they compare to what's already out there?

What performance do they offer for 3D/Aperture/gaming?

Faster, better performance. How that translates is anyones guess. As it really depends on how reliant the program you are using is on the GPU.

The ATI/AMD HD 3800 series are very good performers for the price. They also sport onboard HD (Blu-ray & HD-DVD) decoding with support for 1080p on 30" dual link displays (2560x1600). I have tested this on the PC side. This includes HDMI support with in-band sound.

The 8800GT (nv92) based cards have slightly faster 3D performance and have overcome the 7-series limitation of HD over dual link displays.

Both support DirectX10.1 but that is pointless on the Mac. One can hope that the Mac Pro rev will allow for Crossfire or SLI to increase performance. HP has shown that a single system can support both technologies (see their Blackbird 002 gaming system). Also, Diamond Multimedia demonstrated Crossfire cards running on SLI mainboards by using a driver virtualization technique. There is a sight (5%) performance penalty for this configuration, but it does allow for ATI cards to be used in performance configurations on SLI systems.

Forget about SLI or Crossfire, there isn't the customer base for them to even bother.

None of nvidias cards supports DX10.1
