And now moving on from Alex Smith to a quarterback who's actually good:

Tom Brady was named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year today. He is the first NFL player to win the award since Joe Montana in 1990.

I still love this quote from the Sporting News
The Sporting News

October 11, 1999

Tom Brady-Classic, tall, drop-back passer with a decent arm. Has improved his play and could continue to rise. Could be an NFL backup.

So I was just watching the news and they were talking about the Pats-Giants game next week. Apparently the NFL decided that they won't show the game over the air for the Providence market. That's ****ing ********. RI senators Reed and Whitehouse even sent a letter to Goodell, but apparently he's not going to budge.

Why the **** is Boston the only market to get the game? They're the NEW ENGLAND Patriots. I live closer to ****ing Foxboro than Boston is to Foxboro, but I won't be able to watch the ****ing game because I'm like 5 miles to far from Boston to get Channel 5 over the air.

So how the **** am I supposed to watch this game? I don't have cable, but even if I did, Comcast is the only ****ing service in this area and they don't even have the NFL Network.

**** THE NFL NETWORK.

**** THE NFL NETWORK.
You are aware that there are people outside of Boston that won't get to see it don't you. Most of the northeast that might want to see the game wont be able too. Hartford is right in the middle of Pats/Giants country and wont get the game over the air.

Wow, such hatred. I love it!
Indeed.

P.S. If you had cable there is a good chance you would get your local Boston affiliate.

P.P.S. You better get your digital converter before February 2009.;)

P.P.P.S. You can always go to a bar, I'm sure the game will be on there.

Yeah, but it's stupid. Plus the fact that the Providence market is closer to Foxboro than the Boston market. If you're going by proximity and only the market where they actually play, the Providence market should get it.

Cable is a waste of money. 99% of the channels are crap. I'd never watch any of it. Plus I get better quality picture over the air.

My HDTV has a built-in ATSC tuner :)

Obviously not if you can't get over the air Boston channels.;)

That's not what I'm talking about. The Boston over the air channels don't have strong enough transmitters to reach me.

I get OTA channels out of Providence. As far as the picture quality, I was referring to OTA vs Cable. Cable uses much more compression than OTA for HD content. Therefore, OTA has a better quality picture than cable.

I would think that Boston would have transmitters for their stations that should be able to range pretty far.

Yeah, but they apparently reach just a few miles short of me.

I can pick up stations about 25 miles away on digital. Boston's stations are 32.6 miles according to antennaweb, and I can't get a strong enough signal.

I don't mean to gloat, but...

Well, okay, I do. I'm also closer to Foxboro than Boston is, and I also don't get Boston stations OTA (actually, I think only one TV in our house gets anything OTA at all anyway). HOWEVER! Since I live in RI, we have Cox cable, and they include the NFL Network in their standard digital package. :D

Otherwise, Gator's Pub in North Smithfield is a pretty good place to watch a game. I was there for Game 1 of this year's World Series.

I got Cox here in CT as well, we also get NFL Net HD, but I also think that Comcast here has NFL Network too.

I'd go to a bar if I was 21.. :/

stupid ****ing alcohol laws.

And none of my friends get NFL Net because they all have comcast here in my town :/ I might end up going to my grandparents because they get NFL net on their cox service (they live in RI)

LEAGUE'S ANTITRUST EXEMPTION COULD BE THREATENED

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that the unavailability of the NFL's in-house network could result in an attack on the league's antitrust exemption.

On December 19, Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Arlen Specter (R.-Pa.) sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting such an outcome if the December 29 game between the Patriots and the Giants isn't generally available.

"The NFL appears to be moving incrementally closer to limiting distribution of its programming to subscription television," the letter said. "Now that the NFL is adopting strategies to limit distribution of game programming to their own networks, Congress may need to reexamine the need and desirability of their continued exemption from the Nation's antitrust laws."

Earlier in the month, Senator John Kerry (D-Massachusetts) wrote a letter to Goodell urging the league to find a way to make the game available to people throughout his state.

In response, Goodell offered to submit the league's lingering dispute with cable giant Time Warner to arbitration. In response, Time Warner's CEO politely said, "Get bent."

"As I'm sure you are aware, over the years we've been able to successfully reach agreements with hundreds of programming networks without the use of arbitration. We continue to believe that the best way to achieve results is to privately seek a resolution and not attempt to negotiate through the press or elected officials," wrote Time Warner big cheese Glenn Britt.

We suggested a few weeks ago that the NFL should auction the national broadcast rights to the game. If New England is 15-0 come Sunday night, the league could reel in at least $100 million come Monday morning.

A lot more than $100 million could be riding on the outcome of this one for the league. If the game that caps the first 16-0 regular season in league history can't be seen by anyone who wants to see it without going to a sports bar or installing a satellite dish, the league could be in hot water.

Did the NFL block the networks from getting this game, who was originally supposed to air the game.

Not all bars you have to be 21 to get in to.

i would go to the sports restaurant type bars. those are usually less rowdy and don't have an age minimum. if you're lucky, you don't have to order anything, you can just walk up and take an open seat at the bar and watch football and drink water. i've done this several times during my freshman year of college.

We brought a DirectTV Disk and two consuls with us in to Ecuador, but haven't set it up. If the NFL keeps this line, I'm gonna get up on the roof, install the Disk, find the signal coordinates and get an NFL Card somewhere on the street.
