we looked pretty lifeless out there today. hopefully, it's just jet lag and first day jitters and not a sign of things to come. not too impressed with the offense so far, even though the pitching looks good. huddy did pitch well after kate hudson showed up in the first inning to ruin everything.

Vin is starting to show his age a bit. He makes mistakes here and there, like missing the count or mixing up a player's name. No big deal, and we certainly forgive him some slips-ups. He still quotes the classics and throws in an outrageous pun or two nearly every game. And if you remember this one, he still does "deuces are wild."

Chick Hearn was doing the same thing in his later years and everyone was OK with it. We've just got too much invested in him and he's too iconic to quibble about such things. Once in a great while I'll find myself annoyed that he spends so much time fawning over kids in the stands or whatever. But I quickly return to Scully worship when I hear almost any other announcer call a baseball game. Even a lot of the veterans are freakin' idiots.

I know somebody who was working on a biography of Vin, which he started maybe 15 years ago and never finished. Apparently Vin is not the most cooperative subject, not because he's unfriendly but I think because he's quite private and doesn't like a fuss being made over him. I hope he relents before he gets much older -- Vin has more baseball history in his little finger than anybody else has in their head.

The last I heard the biography was in the final stages, but he's still against the idea. According to the author, it's not a behind-the-scenes expose or anything, just a long ode to a great subject. It wasn't clear if or when it will be published.

He sure has a weakness for the little tykes. It can be a bit much sometimes, but if he wasn't such a sentimental person, would he care as much about baseball?

Maybe this is another book. Do you know the author's name? The last time I talked to the friend who was working on a book on Vin, which was a few years ago, he'd pretty much shelved the project. He grew up in Southern California but has been working in Sacramento for years now, which I think made it a more difficult project to pursue.

BTW, the LA Times ran a brief "appreciation" of Vin in today's sports section. I thought it was pretty disappointing.

opening day is becoming a disaster...yankees game postponed and two more games on rain delay, and also hearing the braves could be in trouble tonight.

So someone explain why the Twins are building an open air stadium while if they were playing in that said stadium right now the game would be snowed out. Isn't there a reason why the Metrodome has a roof.

good question. i don't know. there should have been a roof of some type before they started building.

I think money was an issue but still a little common sense will tell you that it can snow into May in Minnesota. Not going to be a warm first month. You would think they would have learned from Cleveland last year.

And in flipping through the free preview of extra innings I noticed Crabtree TV doing Braves games. Is that the new Braves network?

Guess they need to invest in some orange baseballs.

it's peachtree tv, and they are what used to be wtbs, a local station in atlanta. after the end of last year, tbs completely split off from it's wtbs roots and became cable only nationwide. and they are not really the new braves station, they only show 45 games on tv (and there was a huge stink around the south whether those outside of atlanta would see those games, and right now, it's a no), so that's thatt.

and i really don't want to start the year 0-2.

I can't wait for it to be warm in Seattle, making it worth going to baseball games.

Here is to the Yankees and the Padres meeting in the World Series again.

Here is the one that I had heard about.

Great game by Dice-k tonight.

6.2IP 2H 1R 0BB 9K.. only reason he didn't go 7 was because his pitch count was getting a little bit high (96)

Oh yah, and Paps struck out the side in the 9th :D

2-1 sox win :)

If Dice-K can pitch like this the whole year, we're going to be in good shape.
