Bleh, ****** game. Lester couldn't get his control sorted until the 4th inning. Rich Harden pitched amazing. I went back to sleep after the 3rd inning after Lester gave up that huge home run by Emil Brown.

Manny hit #491.
So what your saying is that for the Red Sox to be good they need Beckett and Schilling to be healthy.....oh wait. That sucks.

So the big exhibition game between the Dodgers and Red Sox at the coliseum is Saturday, anyone planning to go. While I was looking for pics I found this site that lists all the field dimensions.

Not sure what the dimensions will be for this weekend. Are they keeping the fences the same?

If you think 425 to dead center is bad.

I decided against it. The traffic is going to be horrendous and my first regular season tickets are the following week.

So, anybody interested in Juan Pierre? He appears to be an orphan in the Dodger outfield, and very unhappy about it. I'll bet he's aching to be traded, and Dodgers are probably shopping him around. They'd probably eat some of his contract to open up the roster slot.

My understanding is that the dimensions will at the L.A. Coliseum will have to be even smaller than they were from 1958-1961. In the 1990s the running track that used to encircle the football field was removed, the field lowered, and new seats installed at the new field. So the field area is smaller now than it used to be. Per Wikipedia:

The Coliseum is scheduled to once again host a Major League Baseball game. The Los Angeles Dodgers are scheduled to play the second game of a three-game exhibition series with the 2007 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox in the venue on March 29, 2008, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Dodgers' move from Brooklyn to the west coast.[9] A crowd of up to 115,000 is expected, [4] which would set a Guinness World Record for attendance at a baseball game. During 1958-1961, the distance from home plate to the left field foul pole was 251 feet (77 m) with a 42-foot (13 m) screen running across the close part of left field. Due to reconfigurations of the Coliseum since then, the 2008 exhibition game will have a left field line only 200 feet (61 m) long with a 60-foot (18 m) screen. 200 feet (61 m) is 50 feet (15 m) less than the minimum required for a regulation game. This being an exhibition game, that rule could be suspended. Net proceeds from the game are due to be turned over to the ThinkCure charity.

I think I've established here already that I'd give Pierre away for a bag of balls, so I won't go into that again. Ethier had a good spring, Kemp is the right fielder of the future, and Jones pretty much has to be in center. So something has to give.

That is better than the original dimentions for Fenway, where the right-center field was 540ft, as was the original dimentions of Tiger Stadium (when home plate was in right field). Also, the center field dimentions at Braves Field in Boston was 580ft to straight-away center, with a flag pole in the field at 440ft.

Indeed you have. I think it's almost a given that the Dodgers aren't going to get even that much for Pierre, given his contract overhang, which I believe is currently around $36 million for four years. The Dodgers also have a healthy Jason Repko again (until he runs into another wall, at least) as a fourth outfielder who can play any of the positions. Repko can be used in the utility role with the occasional start, but Pierre can't. I wouldn't be surprised if he was gone before opening day -- which I'm sure would delight you no end. ;)

It's not that I want him off the team per se. I just don't think the Dodgers should play him if he isn't one of their three best outfielders. If he bounces back and plays like in his early years with Florida, i.e., well enough to make the starting lineup, then I'd be fine with that. But he just hasn't been productive enough to warrant that in years, in my opinion.

He had a couple of outstanding seasons in Florida, and in Colorado, and weak years with both teams. His season with LA wasn't a career year obviously but it wasn't awful either. It was pretty close to his average. But the fact is, he's probably not going to be given a chance to return to form in LA. He's an everyday player who's being paid to play every day, but he won't have a chance to do better than platoon with the Dodgers. Unless the Dodgers pull a shocker and trade Ethier, then I think Pierre will have to go, if only to clear a roster spot.

Do you actually watch baseball at all? If Schill was part of the key to our season, we would have been in trouble long ago. We only needed Schill to eat up some innings to keep Clay's innings down (and then pitch in the playoffs). He was gonna be the #3 or #4 starter.

Beckett comes off the DL in time to pitch in Toronto (second series of the year). About the same time Pettite is supposed to make his first start.

I would be worried about Beckett's back. I think it might give him problems all season.

When you look at the size of the parks now compared to what they were 50-75 years ago the home run has become cheapened by smaller parks.

You should be more worried about Pettite. Beckett is going to be fine.

Only time will tell but Pettitte is going to start game 3 or 4. Only difference is Pettitte is not the ace of the staff anymore, Beckett is. We can survive without Pettitte can the Red Sox survive if Beckett goes down for a few weeks.

In other news, the father of steroids is at it again with a new book. He claims that Arod probably took steroids but doesn't think that Clemans did. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3314192

I think there is a chance that Pettitte's elbow will linger all season.

And Beckett is going to come back to start the 5th or 6th game (which is the 3rd or 4th under normal circumstances). Its the same thing, except Beckett is younger than Pettitte.

I think that's pretty optimistic. I would argue that the Red Sox are (on paper) in slightly better shape overall than the Yankees are. The Yankees have more unknowns in their pitching staff, but have a slightly stronger lineup. Neither team can afford to lose a starter for any length of time. The Yankees needed a very hot second half last season to make the playoffs. You can't expect that to happen every year, so they really need to get off to a good start.

The Yankees had more then pitching problems last year. They started off cold. nobody hit, pitching got injured. By the time they got it in gear they had too far to catch up. Granted the Red Sox opened the door for them to get back in but it was to far a lead. I think they will be healthier to start this season, the only question is can the young kids step it up. A lot is riding on the young starters. But the same can be said for the Red Sox.

Red Sox, Yankees, Red Sox, Yankees - Blah, blah, blah...

GO INDIANS!! Rightfully should have taken the whole thing last year. Still crying about that:(

Hey, if you see Garko, ask him how the champagne tasted.. oh wait. :p
