So many key events can happen in March, I feel like this discussion is somewhat premature. Veterans can be injured, non-roster invites or rookies may prove themselves. Probably every roster in baseball will change in some significant way between now and opening day.

I figured Schilling for at least one or two stints on the DL this year..Didn't expect it before the equipment truck left Fenway for Fort Myers.Given it's February 7th,way too early to determine any sort of impact..

I've already gone on record that not getting Santana was a bad idea for the Sox.

A starting 5 with Buchholz and Lester is not what world series champs are made of.

If I am a Red Sox fan, I am praying to the gods of blister prevention that Beckett holds up.

In other news, Bedard is officially a Mariner. With that move, you have your prohibitive favorite for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it a mistake. They may eventually consider it a lost opportunity.

At this point, the defending champs are in a pretty good situation, better I would argue than the Yankees in terms of their weaknesses. It may be enough that for the Red Sox that the Yankees didn't get him.

I think a lot depends on Matsuzaka.

If he is just a 15 win 4.00+ ERA guy, that's not going to get the job done this year.

If he can be borderline Cy Young material, no one will care about Santana.

Agreed.

Although I think the Yankees are in a similar situation.

I wouldn't worry about the number of wins he ends up with, since that's not a great indicator of effectiveness. One of Clemens' later Cys was because of his record and not his high ERA. (Especially on the Red Sox, where good hitting can win games after the starters have left the game.) But I think you're right that he has to have a lower ERA this year than last because there's no reason to think Schilling will have as many quality starts in 2008.

the clemens roiding as a family?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's become a daily routine: A new element of Brian McNamee's "I injected Roger Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone" story emerges -- and Clemens' attorneys call the pitcher's former personal trainer a liar.

The latest, and quite possibly oddest, twist involves Clemens' wife.

McNamee told congressional investigators he injected Debbie Clemens with HGH -- at the seven-time Cy Young Award winner's direction -- before the couple posed for a 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition photo shoot, a lawyer familiar with his testimony said Friday.

The lawyer spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of Thursday's testimony have not been publicly released. McNamee's statements about Debbie Clemens were first reported by the New York Daily News on its Web site Friday.

well, if the wife is taking it, what about the children? i've met koby once, and he doesn't seem like the roiding type. i hope he isn't taking any drugs. and on another note, how much are my clemens signed balls going to be worth now?

So I got to see Don Mattingly yesterday at Mohegan Sun. Tried to get his autograph but the hoards of people and bodygaurds made it hard. I also got to see Cano, Goose, Zimmer, Leeland, and a few others.

Are the Giants any better now tho. What good players do they have now that they didn't have when Bonds was there.

Lincecum has oodles of talent, but is unproven and pitches like he is one windup away from a serious injury.

They picked up Aaron Rowand who is fun to watch and is coming off a career year.

They have a solid pitching core with Cain and Lowry in addition to Lincecum...but yeah the cupboard is pretty bare.

I have to admit that I believe the Mets will make it to the world series now with the addition of Santana, along with the continued growth of Maine and Perez. Also, the return of Pedro full time to the staff should help, especially if he looked like he did at the end of last year, and he can help tutor the young pitchers. Hopefully, Reyes won't disappear in September like last year and there will be a resurgence of Delgado. All that appears likely, so I've got to say Mets make it to the WS, probably against the Sox, Yanks, Tigers, or perhaps the Angels.

God no. but i'm going to be much happier being a fan without having to explain away bonds.

and they can build/rebuild. with him they were stuck waiting on the record. now they can play baseball.

the mets have won the nl championship on paper the past two years. how many did they actually win? none. i think the mets are overrated, especially reyes. pedro and el duque are probably going to get hurt, and i would say they finish in third place with a .500 record. i think the brewers or braves make the ws against the tigers.

.500 record?! What are you on crack? They have finished 18 games and 10 games above .500 that past two years. Now that Perez and Maine have gotten it together and with the addition of Santana, you can't honestly believe they will be worse than 10 games above .500? Furthermore, Pedro was hurt basically all last year and El Duque was limited. Even if both have the same stats as last year, Santana is a HUGE improvement of Glavine and will add at least 5-8 more wins over the 10 games over .500 last year. So there.

The only reason I am discounting the Phillies is because Utley and Howard have to face Santana and they are not the greatest left on left hitters, especially since Santana is tough on lefties.
