red sox have won enough, finally, and i never want the mets in the series or winning it again... hope yer wrong.

angels over any NL team in 4 or 5

Angels have too many low obp type of players who are fine when they are hot (see Chone Figgins last summer), but when the hits stop falling, they have no way to get on base.

That's why I bashed the signings of Hunter and GMJr -- more of the same.

Their pitching and Vlad will give them a chance though because that division is so weak.

The Angels have been on the brink the last few years it seems. Their pitching is always pretty good and Lackey is somewhat of a stud. Just because of Vlad you always have to give the angels a shot. Basically every time I attend a game at Angels stadium he hits one out, I mean, he hits shots wayy out.

go to every home game!

as a life long Giants fan(i even gave my oldest son the middle name of McCovey!) i came to really respect them when they beat the Giants in the '02 series. since the strike('94) i hadn't really followed much and '02 was my first year paying real attention again. i still think they are the other(red sox) best team in the A.L. and in all of the MLB.

and,IMHO, scioscia is the best manager in the MLB...;)

I would go to every game but I'm from New Jersey and a Mets fan so I only go to Angels games occasionally, I'm usually watching Tivo'd Mets game at home. I'm a big fan of their stadium and how they play, though. They are my American League team! :)

Scoscia is the classic example of overmanaging, doing things that hurt his team while it looks like he is doing something good.

The one positive I can say is that players on his team are very adept at taking extra bases.

You know what cracks me up though, is how everyone trashed the A's and their Moneyball no SB, no sac bunt approach for how it doesn't work in the playoffs but you never hear a word about the Angels not being able to crack the 1st round of the playoffs even though they do all those "small ball" things in the playoffs that Joe Morgan and his philosophical partners in crime love so much.

Did you ever wonder why you never noticed people saying they do not make it past the first round of the playoffs?? It is because they won the WS in 2002 and in 2005 they beat the Yanks in the Division Series and lost to the Chi Sox in the ALCS. So since 2002, they have won the WS, lost in the ALCS to the 2005 WS Champ, lost in the ALDS to the 2004 WS Champs (Red Sox), and lost in the ALDS to the 2007 WS champs (Red Sox). So in the last 6 playoffs, they've missed them twice, won 1 championship, and lost to the eventual WS champ the other three times. Hmm, maybe you should get something straight.

Why start in 2002?

Let's start in 2000 when Scoscia took over.

Since then his team has gone 703-593 in the regular season. That's pretty good.

They have won the division 3 times and the world series once.

That's pretty good too.

The year the Angeles had their 3rd WORST SB % was the year they won the World Series.

my prediction

It's going to be the Tampa Bay Rays all the way in this next season.

Why? Karma. You just can't suck so bad for so long and not have something go right.

yer from illinois and aren't familiar with the chicago cubs?

Clearly you're not from Illinois... :D

I've never met anyone who was from outside this state who didn't think we all must live in (or near) Chicago. I live 300 miles from Chicago, and I'm still an hour away from the southern edge of this state (think Tennessee tipped on its side). Most people in this part of the state really dislike anything that has to do with Chicago.

Secondly, when you're from this part of Illinois, and you want to root for a local team, it's the Cards. I'm sticking with the Rays, because I like to dream about living somewhere that doesn't require me to shovel snow out of my driveway!

you just did.

i'm relatively familiar with illinois and the where abouts of chi-town. i assumed that you could be either a cards fan/cub fan/chisox fan. i didn't say you were. seeing how your location is southern illinois i was pretty much assured the cards were your team.

i also assumed that you didn't know or had forgotten quite a bit about MLB history. the span that the devil rays have been in baseball and unsuccessful is nothing compared to the futility the cubs have endured.

That's a pretty snippy thing to say.

I think it's a little hard to compare the two teams. The Cubs have had a longer history, which has included longer periods of pain, but....

...they have at least won the World Series twice
...they have won the NL Championship a bunch of times
...they have an untold number of Hall of Famers
...they play at Wrigley Field
...you used to be able to listen to Harry Caray slobber and drink over the radio

The Rays, on the other hand...

...have played ten years of not showing a glimmer of hope or real talent
...will see no Hall of Famers based on their rosters so far
... play on artificial turf in Florida for Chrissakes! I challenge anyone to name a more crappy MLB facility than Tropicana Field
...are named after a listless pathetic animal
...have finished in last place in their Division every year (except '04, when they finished 4th in their Division)
...are only five years older than their cross-state rival that has won two World Series (coming into post-season as a wild card both times)

Give the Rays enough time, and their record of being crappy will eclipse that of the Cubs. The only thing that will save them is that they will probably never last that long. In this era, teams that don't perform end up being dismantled and moved elsewhere (ask an Expos fan, if you can find any).

I can't believe I'm debating about which team sucks the worst. :D

By the way, I'm not a Cards fan. My point was that people in southern Illinois tend to be Cards/Rams fans. I'm honestly not a native of Illinois, having lived here only two years (so, I'm not really a part of the "you either live in Chicago, or you hate Chicago" rivalry). My team.... before the Rays..... was the Orioles. I grew up in that area.

lol.

my bad. assumed to much...

Part of the problem is not too many bad teams, the main issue is that there are to many teams in general. There is not enough good talent to support 30 teams. 7 are great and the others are just average. The Rays will never be good as long as they are in a bad market with a cheap owner.

spring training tv schedule

webcal://icalx.com/public/furcalchick/Spring%20Training%20on%20TV.ics

just finished this today, post on your ical and follow preseason baseball. the regular season schedule will be up in the next few weeks. times are eastern, so adjust if you're not on the east coast.

(for those that don't know, i made a national tv calendar last year to help people track when a baseball game is on national tv instead of looking at 10 different pages just to find a game)

None are below average? Just checking your math here. ;)

I think there's plenty of talent to go around, it's just not well-distributed. That's what happens when one team is allowed to spend four times the league average on player salaries.

I will agree with that, but I do think there are to many teams. There is too much dilution. The major market and small market gap is to great to be able to support so many teams. But it isn't just a baseball issue, look at the NBA.

We have one more big issue to get through before we can focus on baseball this year. The congressional hearings are tomorrow.

Wade Boggs anyone?

Wade Boggs wasn't home grown talent and didn't play enough years there to really help the team. His career was on the way out when he joined the Devil Rays.

The NBA is obviously a different issue as you have several small-market teams which are competitive and many large-market teams which are not.

The issue isn't dilution, it's distribution. You'd have a lot more baseball fans in places like Tampa, Kansas City and Pittsburgh if these teams were able to compete on some relatively equal footing for the available talent.

You also need owners that are willing to spend the money. A lot of cheap owners don't help the situation. Of course that is only one factor.
