The NBA is obviously a different issue as you have several small-market teams which are competitive and many large-market teams which are not.

The issue isn't dilution, it's distribution. You'd have a lot more baseball fans in places like Tampa, Kansas City and Pittsburgh if these teams were able to compete on some relatively equal footing for the available talent.

The NBA also has a tougher salary cap than baseball does. In the NBA it comes down to management too, just like in baseball. The San Antonio Spurs are an extremely well-run franchise. The Memphis Grizzlies are not.

But why am I discussing it here, seeing as how I couldn't get an NBA season thread off the ground?

You also need owners that are willing to spend the money. A lot of cheap owners don't help the situation. Of course that is only one factor.

They'd be willing to spend the money if so many teams weren't in such hopeless situations year after year. They're in this as a business. Expenses can't exceed revenues. The game's revenues should be pooled far more than they are now, and overall team payrolls should be capped.

Interesting would be each team gets the same amount to spend and then talent in terms of player evaluation and indivudual skills would actually matter.

Spending money is an argument for yankee and boston fans...just spend more money.

Most teams simply do not have that kind of fan base. Period.

Personally, I don't really see the enjoyment in following a team that has around double the payroll of half the teams in the league.

I mean either you buy the best talent and it pays off (WOOO!) or you don't and you lose (now you suck even more cause you wasted money).

I mean...yay Boston won the world series! All they had to do to get there was pay $886,161 more per regular season win than the Rockies did.

The Red Sox paid $1,490,872 per regular season win.

The Rockies paid $604,711 per regular season win.

The Red Sox may have won the World Series, but they were a long way from the most efficient franchise.

That's why I love rooting for the Twins and A's and Indians and even the Rockies. When they win, it actually means something.

But hey, go on and root for those $1.5 million wins, cause the losses cost you more too.

those of you with clemens signed balls will see their value drop down to zero after today because of the hearings. i have a personally signed one myself (wasn't planning to sell it). and those with maddux and ryan stuff will see their values go up, as they are clean. i wonder if clemens' kids are clean or not...

wonder if greg maddux will be the undisputed greatest pitcher in the modern era now since he's likely clean.

Is Maddux clean tho, we don't know for sure how far the rabbit hole goes.

It is not looking good for Mr Clemans. He is digging himself deeper.

rocket looks like he bulked up since since he first signed a hundred years ago. i noticed that today. he looks like he is a lot bigger. ...as does bonds..and so did mcgwire. i hope the rocket didn't take any thing illegal.

maddux looks the same other than he is older. i think maddux is clean

i do not, however, trust mcnamee at all...

"it is what it is..." isn't answer to anything...

I don't know if I would ever trust a lawyer named Rusty.

Ok in watching hours of this committee I am certain that this is nothing more then people taking sides with or against Clemans an not getting to the core of the issue. This is far from an impartial hearing.

lol. sen. foxx just said they were wasting time with all this...

she also asked mcnamee if he was writing a book or had a book deal. i wonder if he tried to blackmail some folks and they called his bluff and he did something he regrets now. he has already admitted lying.

Clemans isn't telling the truth anymore then Mcnamee is. They are both lying about stuff.

Haha now they are fighting amongst themselves.

yeah...and i want to believe rocket but i can't..

WOW!

i was just going to say mcnamee is a lying drug dealer when that one senator beat me to it!

Me either.

Guess I didn't realize baseball enjoyment should be based on "efficiency." ;)

Hmmm am I missing something or is that quote doctored.

Enjoyment can be based on many things, but if it takes you $150 million to do what someone else can do with $60 million, then maybe you aren't really very good at what you do.

i get what you're saying. but it also comes down to locale. if you grew up a red sox fan, or a yankee fan yer most likely going to like them whether they can spend money and win or not. for the record i do believe that boston has had a lot of farm team players on the WS winners. feel free to double check that. i don't keep up like i used to.

and i agree on the last bit. it builds character. it really is neat when a small market team wins. it is a testament to frugality and some other things. but it is most likely a strategy based out of necessity not out of a mindset. in other words if they had "1.5 million" to spend on wins they would.

Exactly. The teams which are lucky enough to be in the large media markets somehow have the idea that it has become their divine right to spend five times as much on player salaries than teams in small markets. The imbalances are obviously ridiculous if only because they condemn many teams to permanent doormat status. Baseball fans in those cities suffer, and so does the game for not addressing the issue.

and then add to that the threat of a franchise moving...:(

further evidence that the florida marlins are a complete joke: http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/fla/...ees&affiliateID=2008hp_clubpromo_fla_manatees

are they trying to look bad? i know miami is an event type city, but you think people show up to games to watch this?

i'm going to be stuck in the abyss of baseball this year, no braves on tbs (still mad at them for selling out), and most of the games outside of espn's lame pickings are going to be filled to the rim of last place dreck (at least for me). at least there's still wgn...
