This is also the 4th (Nomo, Lowe, Buchholz, and now Lester) no hitter caught by Jason Varitek, which is tied for the major league record
Actually, he's the new record holder. He had been tied with Yogi, and a few others with 3.
Any perfect games or all nonos.
Schilling's was the closest. The only baserunner reached on an error by, well, you can guess who.
Instant replay only for home runs or foul balls down the line. No ball/strike calls or catches.

Absolutely for HRs, I don't think it's really necessary for fair/foul on the field itself, and catches, it depends. Depending on how they work it, the replay decision could work out to be faster than the arguing.

Oh, and Lester is on my fantasy team. :D Thanks to the no-no, I've got more than twice as many points for today as any other team, and I move from 4th to 2nd, barring 40pt miracles in the last few games.

"He's not just a good kid because he threw a no-hitter," Terry Francona said. "He's a good kid because he's a good kid."

You're correct. The stat I saw earlier was wrong. Ray Schalk of the White Sox caught 4 no hitters (2 in 1914, 1 in 1917, 1 in 1922). However, they changed the rules back in 1991, and now one of the no-hitters Schalk caught is no longer considered a no hitter. It was a no hitter through 9 that was broken up in the 10th inning.

They won't count it as a 9 inning no hitter? Extra innings should be just that.

How would they work replay, would it be a challenge like in football and you only get so many. Or would it be automatically controlled by the official scorer?

They used to count it as that up until the rule change in 1991. I don't know why they changed it. The page I was reading about it on said that 15 games are no longer considered no hitters because of that change.

If it still worked that way, Pedro would have pitched a perfect game for the Expos.

The version plenty of talking heads talk about is having a 5th umpire as part of the crew, and have one in a booth with replay stuff.

So, the only thing I'm concerned about with Lester is the fact that he threw 130 pitches, which is quite a bit higher than any other outings this year.

However, the schedule works in his favor. Because of the rain out on Friday and doubleheader on Saturday, they're going to have Masterson spot start tomorrow (call up from AA then option back after the game) and then call Colon up to take Buchholz's place in the rotation on Wednesday. This gives Daisuke his full four days of rest, and Wake, Beckett, and Lester all get an extra day. :D

we're getting close to getting willie fired, by sweeping the mets (who we own) in the doubleheader yesterday. but bad news is, church is a jerk and tried to hurt escobar, not once, but twice, and now escobar has a sore knee.

Mike Piazza retires.

Am I the only Mets fan here that never liked Piazza?

And yeah... yesterday was a frustrating day for the Mets... considering the Braves scored six in both games and we only got half that both games combined plus a bullpen meltdown and Maine pitching like @$$.

Brandon Webb is trying for his 10 win in 10 starts today.

Not doing to bad for his last 22 starts either if you look to the end of the last season.

Colon is done for the day because they're still trying to build up his pitch count (at 75 right now).

5ip 6h 2r 2bb 4k.. not bad for a first outing.

You didn't quite see him in his prime, but defensively he was never much better than average. He'll go to the Hall of Fame on the strength of his bat.

Ouch... do I come across as that young? You're pretty far off on my age to assume I didn't watch him play his entire career. :)

I know he'll go, I'd just prefer he go with a Dodgers hat on and my die-hard Dodgers fan friend hopes for the opposite. Just always felt his bat < his defense + self-aggrandizing ass.

The umps strike again taking a home run away from A-Rod that hit the stairs in the bleacher seats and bounced back.
