The NFL goes to great lengths to protect the quarterback. Why not do the same in baseball. Why risk injuring the most important player on the field. National League pitchers can't hit any better than the ones in the American League.

I think, on a scale of 1 to 10, how the NFL protects the quarterbacks is a 4. The MLB is a 17. Why stop with the DH? Why not put one of these on the field:

If you hit the quarterback after they have gotten rid of the ball or ever below the knees then you are penalized, but you can sack and beat the crap out of them otherwise. They are in the game as much as anyone else on the offense. To more accurately draw a parallel between the two you would have to suggest stricter penalties for beaning the pitcher while batting, not excusing them from half the game.

lol, so just because of one freak injury from a guy running the bases, you want to completely eliminate the pitcher batting in the NL?

I haven't heard of any NL pitchers getting hurt running the bases this year.

Like I said, the Yankees coaches should have made sure he knew how to run the bases correctly.

American League pitchers will risk more injuries because they are not used to running bases. No matter how much you teach them to slide or hit the bag they don't have the skills to do it.

Certainly not attacking you specifically, but that just goes with my point: why do we expect pitchers to not even posses the skills to play half the game?

To me it is akin to the US Dept of Education's response a few years back to American children's test scores getting lower with respect to similar tests around the world. Can't compete? Make the tests easier. Can't run the bases? You don't have to.

lol, hank is pissed.

"My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century," Steinbrenner said in Tampa, Fla. "They need to grow up and join the 21st century.

"Am I [mad] about it? Yes," Steinbrenner added. "I've got my pitchers running the bases, and one of them gets hurt. He's going to be out. I don't like that, and it's about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s."
"This is always a concern of American League teams when their pitchers have to run the bases and they're not used to doing it," Steinbrenner said. "It's not just us. It's everybody. It probably should be a concern for National League owners, general managers and managers when their pitchers run the bases. Pitchers have enough to do without having to do that."

wahhhhh....some of us actually like our pitchers hitting instead of having a glorified pinch hitter in that spot. hank wants wussy pitchers that don't do anything to help on offense, and as an nl fan, i'm offended by hank's comments of hating on pitchers batting. i'm sorry yankee fans, but hank is acting like a spoiled brat, and it's going to show in the coming years of your organization going downwards...

New York Mets fire manager Willie Randolph

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired in the middle of the night 2 1/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team’s colossal collapse last September.

Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.

A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was let go early Tuesday morning—making him the first major league manager to get fired this season.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were dismissed in an enormous overhaul that was revealed in a fact-of-the-matter Mets news release at a stunning time—about 12:15 a.m. PDT, nearly two hours after New York’s 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Ken Oberkfell, the club’s manager at Triple-A New Orleans, and Dan Warthen, pitching coach for the Zephyrs, will join the major league staff along with Luis Aguayo, a Mets field coordinator.

A message left for general manager Omar Minaya was not immediately returned. The Mets said Minaya and Manuel would be available to reporters at Angel Stadium at 2 p.m. PDT on Tuesday.

I'm sorry, what the Mets did to Willie was absolutely classless. You don't fly him out to California only to fire him after one game that they won.

Fixed that.

But yes, I agree. Be real here. 6.5 back before the break is bad, but it isn't "fire-your-manager-in-the-middle-of-the-night" bad.

If I were Willie I would rip into the team and the players. If they were gonna let him go it should have been weeks ago. It just makes the Mets look like *******s.

the mets continue to surprise me in the stupid department. you don't fire your manger in the middle of a road trip like this...he should have been fired during the weekend series, and especially not after a win. just dumb and classless. hopefully, it catches the mets off guard and makes them play lousy baseball the rest of the year. if they don't get the right manager that they want to play for, they will be finishing in 4th place in the east this year.

I feel bad for Willie but it's going to be hilarious when the Mets continue to tank. Willie wasn't the reason they suck.

As a Mets fan, aside from hoping they play lousy baseball the rest of the season - though there is the sinister side of me that says I hope this d*** move bites them in the ass - I wouldn't argue with anything in the above posts.

Mike Greenberg and Trey Wingo (who is subbing for Mike Golic until Thursday) were FUMING on Mike & Mike in the Morning today over this firing; they (more or less) called it an act of cowardice.

And I agree 100%. You don't fire an MLB manager literally in the middle of the night West Coast time, and right after the first game of a West Coast trip!

And they are absolutely right. It was an absolutely classless act. Regardless if you felt Willie should be canned, you don't do it they way the Mets did. Totally unprofessional.

i'm going to keep on laughing at the mets as i think they will keep stinking up the joint and finish in 4th place this year. one of the things that makes me happy even if the braves stink (they are a big rival of ours).
