It is unprofessional and childish is what it is. I don't know why he hasn't been fined for this crap yet.

It's almost getting redundant to refer to Manny that way.

So I'm back 'home' and back to the boards after some amazing last games at Yankee and Shea stadiums. Went Sunday night when the Yanks tied it in the 7th and won it in the 10th (yes, I was cheering for them). Then got to watch Lincecum pitch Tuesday night and, even better, watched the Mets tear him up for only his second loss this year. :D

So... /wave

Blah blah blah Mets have won 6 in a row.

Blah blah blah Wright got hosed in All-Star voting.

craig wilson traded to seattle.. i see the pirates have started their annual "fire sale" already...

sadly, i don't see them ever winning again. great franchise too. what a shame.

What is the Pirates payroll. They have a nice new park, why not try to build a team around it.

i would guess that their payroll is the $U.S. minimum wage ($5.85 per hr) x's 45 or however many they have on the roster. :p:rolleyes:

i agree. nice park and certainly enough low finishes in the past 10 years to merit some very good draft picks...

i hope they can rebuild but i don't see it...

The Pirates are a much storied franchise but for the last couple of decades, victims of a system which disadvantages teams in small media markets. Fix that and possibly you can make teams like the Pirates competitive again.

While it is a disadvantage, don't let the team ownership and management off the hook by calling them victims. The Pittsburgh metro area is bigger than Cincinnati and Cleveland, and not much smaller than Denver, St. Louis, San Diego or Minneapolis. All of those teams have at least made the postseason - and won at least one playoff series - since the Pirates last did. They've hired a series of crappy managers and wasted money, not even remotely fielding a team the loyal fan base deserves.

PNC Park is not just good, it's great. It's worth visiting Pittsburgh just to see it. But I'm not sure the quality of the stadium is any great indicator either. The A's have a crappy stadium and terrible attendance, especially considering how many good teams they've had. The Cubs have a great stadium that they once used as an excuse to not improve the team because fans show up regardless of whether they contend.

Ultimately the question "why hasn't Pittsburgh won the World Series in almost 30 years" can be answered by "mostly because of competitive disadvantages." But the question of "why do the Pirates keep sucking so badly year after year?" is answered by "because they use the resources they do have poorly."

what a dope. who is he calling? he is too weird.

as aloofman said, the pirates are terrible mostly because of bad management. look at the knicks for example, high payroll, but a total mess. can't cry foul on low money on that one.

I won't let management off the hook, especially after years of following a team with far greater resources that hasn't won anything in 20 years.

Since you bring up the Indians and the Reds -- it has to be tough for a team based in western Pennsylvania to draw fans when they've got two other major league teams so close by.

i wonder how the padres do so well competing with the la teams just up the road. they are doing okay...

Well dead last in the NLW, but the real answer to your question is 1.2 million people in San Diego vs. 300,000 in Pittsburgh, and Cleveland is closer to Pittsburgh than San Diego is to Los Angeles.

i'd put it off on expansion baseball. i realize that is the easy way out but i do hold the newer teams responsible. frankly, to me it seems that most people think anyone can play this game(any professional sport really) especially rich folks who want to own a team of any kind. in truth there aren't enough top flight athletes. the MLB, and the NBA have to many teams and not enough good players. just my opinion of course... but the NL west's won/lost record and i believe the NBA eastern conference usually make my point...

winning seems to come in cycles for teams so maybe it will reshuffle itself in a year or two in pittsburgh.

It's a game. Lighten the **** up.
And he gets payed big money to play that game too, maybe it is time he shows some respect for it. Is he talented yes, one of the greatest hitters in the game yes. So why the need to act like an ass. Just play the damn game and leave the childish antics at home. He is baseballs version of TO.

The Padres don't really compete with the Dodgers or Angels in terms of marketing, fan base, or broadcasting. There's not very much overlap. San Diegans tend to dislike Los Angeles, just like most other people in the rest of California do. Except for the occasional transplant, considering how geographically close they are, there aren't many Dodger fans in San Diego and vice versa.

I used to be a Raiders fan when they played in L.A. After they moved back to Oakland, I not only gave up on them, I cared less about the entire NFL. Someone from out of state once suggested to me that I could root for the Chargers instead. The idea was so preposterous that I laughed out loud. And I spent my college years in San Diego. I love visiting and wouldn't mind living there. But I'm not going to root for a San Diego team after growing up with the L.A. teams. That's never going to happen.

And as IJ said, it depends on what you mean by "do so well". The Padres are having a bad season even in a weak division. They've never won the World Series and got pasted the two times they played in it. It's not like they're the Clippers of MLB or anything, but through most of their history they have not done "so well."

On the other hand, they've been to the World Series a lot more recently than the Dodgers have. :(

So why the need to act like an ass. Just play the damn game and leave the childish antics at home.

If all players just played the damn game without any character, you'd be complaining that none of them have any personality. These oddballs make sports more interesting. Just because Steinbrenner prohibits his players from having fun, doesn't mean the rest of the teams have to as well.

This is entertainment to me. I know you hate the red sox, but I guarantee there are more fans who get a chuckle out of that than get annoyed. Lighten up and grow a '70s mustache.

I disagree. I love the game, not the antics, and I'm no Red Sox hater. And basing what is good for a sport, particularly one with the history of baseball, on what the majority of today's fans get a kick out of is far from a good policy.

Giambi's mustache is great. You can see it from the nosebleeds and I love the fans who wear fake mustaches. That I can get behind. Popping your head out of the scoreboard and talking on your cell phone during the game is very different. One is fun, the other is distracting, immature and disrespectful.

Disrespectful of what exactly? The fans are more likely to laugh than complain. It's a kids' game being played by adults. If a player isn't enjoying himself, then people say he only cares about the money, or he's selfish, or he lacks heart. And how is it distracting? He didn't miss any plays. He didn't cost his team any runs. It's certainly immature and I'd hate it if all the players acted like that. I'm sure most other players are laughing and shaking their heads and wondering what's wrong with him.

I'm not a big Manny supporter. I don't like that he sometimes seems uninterested in fielding. I hate that so many players don't run out groundballs. But with all the problems in the game now, this seems like very small potatoes. Shouldn't we be more worried about whether PEDs are still in the game? Or banning chewing tobacco from the majors? Or how much less affordable it is to attend a game now? It just doesn't seem like something worth getting worked up about.

Baseball has always had its share of pranksters, probably fewer now than in the past. I think what annoys fans isn't joking around but showboating. I'm not sure what Manny was up to in that photo, but it does seem more like showboating than pranking.

I doubt that it was actually his phone. It was during a pitching change, and I'm guessing one of the scoreboard guys was on his phone and Manny walked over there, and the scoreboard guy gave the phone to Manny or something.

Unnecessary vulgarity despite the asterisks. Climbing into a wall and talking on a phone during a pitching change is part of the game?

I do agree with what you're saying though. There's no reason to fine him.

So Lugo got hurt last night running out a single. It's apparently an injury to his left quad, and looks like it could be a tear.

It seems that Lowrie is going to get called up from Pawtucket to take Lugo's place on the roster. :D

UPDATE:

BOSTON—The Boston Red Sox have placed shortstop Julio Lugo on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain.

Lugo was injured Friday night while running out an infield single in the ninth inning of Boston's 7-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Lugo began to limp as he approached first base, then dropped to ground shortly after hitting the bag.

The Red Sox on Saturday called up shortstop Jed Lowrie from Pawtucket to replace Lugo. Lowrie was in the lineup for Saturday afternoon's game with Baltimore.

Lugo was hitting .268 with 12 steals for Boston this season. Lowrie hit .310 with 7 RBI in 17 games with Boston earlier this year.
