Does running itunes make anyone else's computer jump 20 degrees?

Yes, I have a 2009 Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad-Core with 3 GB of RAM and the CPU temperature climbs about 30℃ when running iTunes or Spotify. I can't understand why since the CPU sits mostly idle.

You might be right about iTunes. Here is today I've been editing some videos and a lot heavier work for over 3 hours now. iTunes is not open since I have a baseball game on the TV.

Found out that normal temp for a 2009 Mac Pro is 35C - 85C

Still can't figure out why itunes makes temp jump?

It's only the Nahalem based processors that do this though. This makes me thing that iTunes is utilizing some functions which aren't compiled for Nahalem optimization. Maybe. 😀 Let's see if it's still doing it with the next iTunes update.

iTunes in my 2006 qctad 2.66 uses about 8%~12% CPU time with about 34 threads while streaming internet radio at 160 kbps. MP3s at 320K are the same. With everything stopped and iTunes minimized iTunes uses 5% ~ 8% CPU.

Interesting I left iTunes open and just watched the CPU usage. It climbed up to 40% then dropped down to 20-30%. Definitely not optimized for Nehalem.

Here's my machine (2.6ghz Quad '09)...it's been on for days and currently all I am doing is surfing and listening to iTunes.

u have a rather high ambient temp too.
i recorded my highest of 33ºC and it was constant for a few days before it dropped back to 32

Mmm...my office is 23-26C ambient room most of the time, so I don't expect the computer to get much lower.

If the computer is recording an ambient temp of more than about 1c above room temperature it almost always means that the exhaust fans are not doing their job. Either dust is clogging the system or the RPM is set too low. It's the meaning of the ambient sensor and the purpose of the exhaust fans.

Exact same behaviour for me :
macpro quad 2,66

temp jumps 25° and fans 1300rpm when listening to music in Itunes....

1 min after quiting Itunes everything is back to "normal" ...

Same here with 2.66 Quad 2009. My office is on the 2nd floor so I have to turn down the thermostat 22˚C and the ambient in my office is still at 31C =(.

My MP without SMC idles between 45-70˚C. I have it set to 1,000 Intake/Exhaust and 1,500 BOOSTA and it stays around 36-40˚C.

Woah! idles at 45 to 70 ºC ... That's rather high!

Hello

15º Jump when starting iTunes (but no difference in CPU activity).

Sheesh... Update something Apple! lol

What's everyone keep their SMC fan settings on? I have mine set like below. Now thats just for surfing, itunes, and downloading content. Is this okay?

PCI 1050
PS 750
Exhaust 1000
Intake 1000
BOOSTA 1500

I can't tell they have increased when I use this settings but it keeps my temps at good levels. Just wondering what everyone else's was set at or any advice on my settings. 🙂

My mac is on the corner of the desk in the corner of my room, so airflow isn't as great over there, it's immediate zone ambient will always be hotter.

At 1000rpms things were too noisy for my preference, my slightly bumped up is:
PCI 1550
PS 700
Exhaust 700
Intake 700
Boosta 800
