Harry should rest the first team in the second leg. Spurs still have to play Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool in the EPL and need to make up six points on Chelsea to make next year's CL. It's a tall order.

I'd hate to see that as a neutral, but there's clearly logic in it from a league perspective. Mourinho will resolutely park the bus at White Hart Lane and willingly accept a meaningless 1-0 or 2-0 loss to Spurs. He knows he needs to rest his players too, in order to be ready for their inevitable semifinal loss to Barcelona. ;)

Schalke sure gets this year's award for "two-faced-team-of-the-season"
league position: 11 and goal difference of -2 and then they go on and on in the CL and Cup
Magath was _fired_ for the lack of performance (after he reacher this quarter final and the final of the cup) and now they are in the CL semi final

around the 65th minute i thought i was seeing the last game of leonardo at inter.. honestly if schalke had continued to push instead of resting this could have ended in a disaster
and schalke substituted in a 17 year old and a player with a reputation of being utterly useless.. that just put the icing on the "cake of humiliation"... they even started without 3 regulars because of bans/injuries

inters defending against headers in their own penalty box was also beyond comical. they lost every single header in the first half

I suppose that's the difference between league and knockout competitions, eh? Winning a league is less tactical, and more about managing resources over a long period.

Kudos to Schalke though, it was a clearly deserved win. Leonardo is definitely in trouble now.

Well that was sucky.

Quite a run though. No complaints about that.

They can get it from Arsenal & Liverpool.

Frankly, the Premier League has been so unconvincing this season that I would throw Man City and Chelsea in there too. Man Utd are going to win the title, but every other spot on the table is up for grabs.

I have a feeling the Chelsea game will be huge. Spurs have been playing down to their opponents' level lately, so they absolutely cannot assume they'll get points from Stoke, Blackpool, or Birmingham.

maximum kudos to Raul: 33 years old, kicked out of the spanish national team(before their titles) and put on the bench at Real, he decided to leave the the single club he has been in his life to go to the heavy steel industry town Gelsenkirchen (just look at the schalke crest) and comes up with 17 goals and 8 assists in 40 games, giving everything he has game after game

at the point of his substitution he was the player on the pitch with the most km in his legs, can you believe that ?
and to top it off: in the after-game interview he then goes on about having to look forward and focus on the next important league game on the weekend (against the 16th of the table).. after the first time in his CL career he won against Inter at home .. and that in his 15th consecutive CL season

i'm so crossing my fingers for the fairy tale of schalke meeting real in the CL final with him scoring the deciding goal

I grew up in a steel town (Cleveland), and I've spent a large part of my career so far studying the archeology of the industrial revolution, so I can respect another steel town like Gelsenkichen. :) I also just realized that is the same town that hosts a big historic mining museum...I may have to cheer them on just a little harder now. ;)

Raul is definitely up for it; you have to give him credit for how hard he still plays.

I think Schalke actually have a better chance of making the final than Real do.

Karma.

'Nuff said.

Merely a down payment.:)

Evra, put some studs on your boots, and Giggs, it's Football not Footflag - corner practice for you!

takao - "...i'm so crossing my fingers for the fairy tale of schalke meeting real in the CL final with him scoring the deciding goal."

I hope your luck is out.:D

It's two for Roo; it was foolish to expect common sense from an organisation that is responsible for the Burton mess, beyond a joke regarding contract negotiation, run like an old boys club, and with UEFA and FIFA is a major cause of disrepute. If Manchester United get through and win the FA Cup, collect the cup, face the FA, do a Harvey Smith - flicking the V, then turn and lift the cup.

Cheers,
OW

what's the word on the street?

Give Way???

It's been ongoing since Christmas, just the new-owner elect trying to extract every last penny from the old owner. Currently arguing over who is liable for a £2m tax bill if they lose a case which is currently being argued with HMRC in the courts. Might be tomorrow or next month. But the running joke is the papers run the same story each day saying the sale will be any moment, hence the obscure reference to General Franco!

Splendid news! Today's 2-1 win over Watford - coupled with Preston's inability to beat Portsmouth – means that we're mathematically safe from relegation this season.

Phew! :)

Anyway, never mind about General Franco – what about erstwhile West Ham player Guillermo Franco?

Phew again! :)

Breaking Arsenal news – it looks like Mad Jens will start at Bloomfield Road!

EDIT: Indeed, he starts – and Arsenal have no replacement 'keeper on the bench. As one of my favourite things is football is an outfield player in goal, I have high hopes of this match. :)

Bright start from Arsenal- and even better, Eboue and Diaby on the scoresheet. All for the tangerines to stay up but sorry guv, my need is greater than yours:D Keep the faith!

Still have zero confidence in that defense. Only won because Blackpool are actually worse at defending and nothing else. I really pray Monsieur Wenger sorts it out in the summer.
