There have been a scattering of reports about European interest in Landon Donovan. Everton remain interested in signing him, and there is of course an obligatory rumnor that Man City are offering a large-ish pile of cash.

I'm more interested to see what, if any, interest other USA players have generated in Europe - especially the players already based there like Altidore, DeMerit, Beasley and Edu. Gomez is happy in Mexico so I imagine he'll stay there, and Bocanegra, Dempsey and Bradley all seem happy where they currently play.

Though, if Hodgson goes to the 'Pool and brings Clint Dempsey I would just have to get a shirt with his name on it, even if he only played there briefly. I'd love to see an American play for Liverpool.

EDIT: Apparently Landon Donovan embraced the local culture a bit too much at Everton....

EDIT2: Oh, and just in case you all missed the action, MLS has restarted league play just in time for the World Cup quarterfinals. Columbus beat lowly DC United last weekend with a "Hand of Frog"-style goal from Guillermo Barros Schelotto, our resident Argentine (who is, incidentally, the same age as Maradona's man-crush, Martin Palermo). We are now 7-2-3 and top of the Eastern Conference. Lately performances have been a little flat though, maybe the players are distracted by the world's biggest football tournament?

UP THE CREW!

USA didn't do too badly in the WC. As for Americans in the Prem.... I'd love to see some of them sign for Wednesday :p ;)

We certainly could do with another John Harkes, that's for sure! Unfortunately since Simek's injuries he just didn't seem to be the player he was. Showed such promise, and has now been released :(

yeah good ol frankeh... i'd like to see them take an interest in Buddle. why he didn't play more in the WC is beyond me...

best new kit of the upcoming season IMHO.. and i'm usually right. :p ;)

I'm not a big fan of red on jerseys, but I do like that one. Even if it is a little too close to Milan for my tastes.

I like that one even better, although it is pretty similar to Argentina's. What is it about powder blue that just works on team shirts?

Striped shirts seem tough to do right, but when they are well done they look great. I like both, though 1860's shirt looks an awful lot like Argentina.

EDIT: Man City have just signed David Silva. How much longer can the United fans dismiss their "noisy neighbors", I wonder?

Not impressed by him, especially his lacklustre performance in Week 1:mad: Seems a bit fragile, see what he is like when he is getting lumps kicked out of him. Still, Modric has performed well and not hidden after injury.

They can be ignored as long as they concede in the last minute.

Cheers,
OW

I'd take him. Anyway, once the self-inflicted process of eliminating the English from their own league is complete, nobody will be kicking lumps out of anyone anymore...there will be plenty of space for free-flowing footballers to work in. ;)

I know, brilliant isn't it? Silva's a great signing for us, can't wait to see him play this season. To be honest, I deal with United fan friends most days (read: argue with) and I have to say there has been a big shift in their opinion of City. They didn't care, now they really really do. It's brilliant, it really is. Incidentally, just renewed my season ticket for the coming season, can't wait!

Seems Roy Hodgson is even closer to being named Liverpool manager:

If I was a Fulham fan, I'd be devastated. There's certainly going to be a lot of expectation on him. Is he the no.1 choice because he can do a job on a limited budget I wonder?

I suspect this is a signal from the Pool board that he will be getting a much less substantial budget than Rafa ever had. (Still can't get over Benitez talking about how little money he had when the amount he spent would buy the Fulham team 10 times over). However, if anyone can get Liverpool going on a tight budget, he's the man. The fans need to give him time and get used to playing fast counterattacking stuff...

If Liverpool indeed intends to slash spending, we are doomed in terms of fighting back to top four (or five?) status. Hodgson will not really be much better off than he was at Fulham, though he might win the Europa League this time.

On the other hand, if we maintain a big budget, I see Hodgson as being a manager with the necessary quality to make good buys and get about the business of pointing the club in a good direction. But everything is still up in the air.

With your current owners, you won't win a thing. There's uncertainty, unrest and you haven't got a pot to piss in, so no signings per se without selling a few of your better players. The thing with Rafa is for every good player he bought (Torres, Alonso, Reina) there was another very mediocre player he'd spent a sizeable amount of money on (Riera, Degen, N'Gog). He did piss away money like that, and as such you don't have much strength in depth.

I agree that our biggest long-term problem is ownership. Hicks and Gillette must either sell out or shell out. Unfortunately, they are trying to run Liverpool like a business (and failing at it), which is the wrong approach.

Silva is a class player. Would have loved to see him at United, but he wouldn't have addressed the glaring weakness in central midfield. United have plenty of good wingers already, just need a good attacker/creator in the center of the pitch like an Özil or Hamsik (or a Modric).

:D:D:D

By the way, it's rumored that Chelsea have tired of John Terry's act and are open to selling him. Would Citeh care to make another blockbuster offer for him this offseason?

Ugh, and we all thought Lescott was a wasteful buy....Terry would make him like like the deal of the century IMO.

We have Wayne Bridge.

John Terry and Wayne Bridge don't really mix. I wouldn't want him anyway.

Also, in defence of Lescott, he did have a good season for us.

How about Stephen Ireland, reminds me of a young Scholes, creative and scores goals, fits easily into a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, is only 23, rumoured to cost only 10 million pounds and best of all, was a former United Academy student.

I think football clubs need to be run like businesses, the problem is many of them aren't and that's why football is in the financial mess it's in. I just think they are trying to run it like the wrong kind of business.

He was? I could've sworn he came through City's academy... Not that I would want to sell him anyway, and nor do I think we'd sell to United.

I remember reading an interview during his stellar season (one before last) when he critiqued United's youth program for making it difficult for youngsters to get promoted to the main team; he even citied that as his reason for switching clubs.

Although thinking of it now, he may have gone over to City at a young age.

Terry - nearly 30, slow, and carrying baggage; he could be in for a shock re the level of club that'll have him.
