I'm currently having an extended holiday in Scotland but haven't heard anything against England hosting the World Cup.

I'll go with Russia for 2018 and I've got a feeling FIFA might go Qatar in 2022, these Middle East countries promise much but when you see what they done with the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi and the golf in Dubai they do deliver.

I must confess, I'm a little surprised at the choice of Qatar but they have the money to throw at it I suppose – it's also an untapped market for FIFA and their sponsors and they lap that sort of thing up when the votes are cast.

However, I've been expecting the Russian bid to win the 2018 tournament for several months, so that's not really a big surprise.

Hahaha how corrupt Fifa is, didn't want England to get it but come on... should have gone to Spain or Holland/Belgium. And QATAR? W...T...F... Someone's not been taking money have they  Should have gone to Australia.

Oh well, World Cup is getting worse and worse every time.... European cup and/or Champions League is where it's all at!

Gutted. I really think we deserve it. Didn't necessarily think we'd get it, but thought we deserved it.

Full results of 2018 voting:

Round 1: England 2 votes, Netherlands/Belgium 4 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 9 votes.
Round 2: Netherlands/Belgium 2 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 13 votes (Russia obtain absolute majority)

So many questions with the Qatar bid.

Setting aside how they won the votes, there are a lot of unknowns with how they would host it. Those stadiums had better be finished on time and be incredibly impressive. Whatever technology they use to cool down the playing fields in the summer heat had better work correctly. They'd better build enough hotels to handle the influx of fans, given that it's by far the smallest country to ever host such a big event. Somebody's going to have to provide practice facilities for all of the teams to use, since it's safe to say that they don't all exist in Qatar. I could be mistaken, but I believe that there's only one international airport there. Is everyone going to the World Cup going to fly into the same airport at the same time? Even if airports in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and Saudi help, you're still talking about traffic jams through the desert to get to a small country. It will be interesting, that's for sure.

And it's definitely disappointing for the US, since we seemed to be the logical choice for 2022. It would have easily made the most money and had the best infrastructure, stadiums, media clout, and sponsorships. Now they will have to compete with Europe for the 2026 bid. Maybe it's all karmic payback for bribing the IOC to get the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Disappointing but not necessarily surprised. To think we were the first out of the four to be ruled out too...

Full results of 2022 voting:

Round 1: Australia1 vote, Japan 3 votes, US 3 votes, South Korea 4 votes and Qatar 11 votes.
Round 2: Japan 2 votes, South Korea 5 votes, US 5 votes and Qatar 10 votes.
Round 3 South Korea 5 votes, US 6 votes and Qatar 11 votes.
Round 4 US 8 votes and Qatar 14 votes (Qatar obtain absolute majority)

It pretty much means that 2026 will be in the Americas (or maybe Africa) since Europe and Asia will be ineligible and Oceania probably doesn't have a big enough country.

Funny that Australia's decision to move to the Asian confederation actually hurts them, since if they were still in Oceania they could bid again for 2026.

I actually like the rule that says that a winning confederation is not eligible to host the next 2 world cups, but I'd like a further rule: Winning countries shall not be considered to host the next 7 world cups. It's ridiculous that some countries (Mexico and Germany) have hosted twice since England last hosted.

I don't believe that European countries will be eligible to host in 2026.
We should be. The rule, unless I'm mistaken, is that the Cup can't be hosted by countries from the same Confederation twice in succession – that's why the Europeans bidding for 2018 weren't up for the 2022 vote.

Might I be the first to publicly announce my support for England's 2026 Bid? 60 years of hurt, and all that.

EDIT: It's two World Cups then, fair enough. 64 years of hurt it is then. :)

To be fair to Mexico, the 1986 World Cup was due to be held in Columbia but they couldn't fulfil their obligations - a key reason why Mexico were selected as much of the infrastructure was already in place from the earlier tournament.

well before the surprising events of today this were my predictions

2018: england
2022: USA

well..... I really thought the US would win 2022. The main buzz here and people complaning on ESPN

is Qatar 2022!

Summer heat of 130 degrees and a football team that has not even qualified for the world cup. First of all the money!!!!!:eek::mad::mad:
and no-offense I say corruption with FIFA!

Speaking as an american, in my personal opinion, many americans will be afraid of traveling to the middle east for their own safety.

Let's be honest, FIFA don't care about the nation they care about commercialization and the amount of media coverage and satellite coverage they can get.

USA 2026/2030/2034:eek: or Mexico 2026/2030/2034 or Canada 2026/2030/2034:D

We need FIFA reform now!:D

Well, all the English media may go for FIFA now.

Cheers,

the Russian vote is no surprise ... their league/clubs has improved massively the last years, including good viewership and them hosting a tournament again was long overdue

the other going to quatar is much more of a surprise .. simply because opposed to russia it's way more risky... the real problem won't be the ACed stadiums but providing each national teams with training facilities up to fifa standard ... this year in south africa that was already very problematic
of course with throwing money at it it will be solved ;)
on the big plus side it's a big emerging market for football with growth potential

I don't believe that European countries will be eligible to host in 2026.

I didn't realize the rule was the next two WCs either. I stand corrected.

With Europe and Asia out, that would mean that the main 2026 contenders would be the US, a South American country, and perhaps Africa again. It could be another decade before that host is chosen, so no sense in contemplating it now.

To be fair to Mexico, the 1986 World Cup was due to be held in Columbia but they couldn't fulfil their obligations - a key reason why Mexico were selected as much of the infrastructure was already in place from the earlier tournament.

There were some rumors floating around that the US had offered itself as an alternative host to the 2010 WC if South Africa had fallen short. Perhaps they could offer the same to FIFA for the Qatar World Cup. In other news, pigs are evolving to develop wings.

I don't quite understand, when did the next 2 world cup's rule come in? France 98 (Europe), Japan/Korea 02, Germany 06 (Europe)...

Besides, Russia being a part of "Europe" I don't really agree with...

FIFA is a massively corrupt good 'ol boys club, even by the standards of massively corrupt, good 'ol boys clubs.

I suspect I'll never have the money to travel to a World Cup outside the US, and that means I won't have the opportunity to go to one till I'm nearing fifty. Still, I'm not shocked. Russia always looked like a very strong bet, and Qatar is a bottomless pit of money so there's little risk of them being unable to install the necessary infrastructure in time.

P.S. finally got a chance to watch the Spurs-Liverpool match, and I have to say we played pretty well. N'Gog's decision-making in front of goal was not always the best, many of his flicks and layoffs went nowhere. In terms of defense both Spurs and Liverpool are pretty evenly matched (read: rubbish), but Spurs are much more dangerous going forward, and that made the difference. Even so, Liverpool had enough chances to draw that match, possibly even win it, but we just didn't take advantage of them.

P.P.S. top of our group in the Europa League...for whatever that's worth. The upside is that we managed a result with a second-string side, the downside is that some of those second string players are still rather disappointing (Joe Cole, Babel, Poulsen). Still, apart from the goalkeeping error it was workmanlike performance.

Brasil 2014 - I'll see you there ;)
