I was really really hoping for the USA to host one of those years. Mostly because of Seattle and we were in a very good spot to host a game or two.

Qatar? Really? :( Is Alcohol allowed there? (not in public and only in expensive hotels/clubs). It's got like a population of Idaho and half are "guest workers" or something else. Anyway, good job Qatar on winning the hosting bid. I don't know much about what you or us presented to the judges but I have a feeling that ours was not a glamorous as yours.

I'm just glad I got to go to the Vancouver Winter Olympics for a day. Otherwise I could never afford to travel anywhere else for such an event.

Anyone who's watched the World Cup will know the importance FIFA places on its sponsors (sorry, 'official partners'), and how their branding is plastered over everything – one wonders therefore the extent to which Budweiser will be allowed to peddle their fizzy wares at the tournament...

I'm disappointed about losing the bid, but I think both Russia and Qatar can probably do the job.

However, I seriously question the integrity of the bidding process and FIFA as a whole. CONCACAF's representative, Jack Warner, is a criminal, a stereotypical corrupt bannana-republic politician - it's as simple as that. And he's certianly not the only one of the FIFA suits who deserves that label.

We laugh about it, and it is a joke, but in a bad way. FIFA proves why self-regulation is not a good thing.

I'd love to. But I'll be a very, very poor graduate student in 2014 and lucky if I can afford to watch it in a pub.

Me too - this is what overdrafts and loans are for!

Sepp Blatter was asked who his favourite Qatar player is.

.... Eric Clapton, he answered..

I don't quite understand, when did the next 2 world cup's rule come in? France 98 (Europe), Japan/Korea 02, Germany 06 (Europe)...

Besides, Russia being a part of "Europe" I don't really agree with...

They changed the rules recently.

Unfortunately geography has nothing to do with it, it's which confederation they are a member of. e.g.Australia is part of the asian confederation not the oceanic.

Hmm, there's a thought, why doesn't Russia move to the Asian confederation, surely that would make world cup qualifying easier for them.

I think it's safe to say that beer ads will still be on the field banners at the stadiums. Whether it will be sold at the games is probably still up in the air. Qatar isn't as draconian about alcohol as Saudi Arabia. My guess is that it will only be for sale inside the actual venues and they'll look the other way during the tournament. Half the Saudi royal family drinks booze in Bahrain on weekends, so it's not like people there don't know what goes on.

So is he an American then? :p

Because they wouldn't make nearly as much money without access to the UEFA Champions League and the Euro Championships? I'm guessing.

Alcohol will be readily available, and rules heavily relaxed, or a lot of people simply won't go to Qatar 2020. FIFA know that.

Thanks, makes sense.

Speaking as an American, I have to chuckle at the English press today, who are making a biug spectacle of feeling sorry for themselves, but I'm not sure the world shares their pain. Look at poor Belgium, most people forgot they were even bidding...meanwhile big American news outlets that should know better like Sports Illustrated are still criticising the heat in Qatar, an extremely facile thing to do. I have to assume that Qatar is going to figure out a way to allow fans to drink at their leisure, otherwise the outnumbered Qataris might find their nation overrun by riotous beer-swillers.

The only way one can feel extremely humiliated by losing the bid is if one felt extremely entitled to begin with. USA can make a strong bid for any world cup, so we have nothing to complain about. We're always in the running. It may be true that the best technical bids didn't win, but this is never a purely technical decision, otherwise the USA or Europe would be hosting every World Cup.

That doesn't change the fact that FIFA are a bunch of corrupt, fatcat *******s.

I love this reaction from 'Arry' Redknapp. Pure win.

On another note, very poignant presentation from the little russian

So did the media really kill the bid? or had FIFA just been exposed for what it is...or both??

The media coverage won't have helped our cause, but to say that we didn't get the World Cup because we upset FIFA by exposing their corruption is wide of the mark. Let's be honest, anyone who has any interest in football is all too aware of what they're like, and what a self-serving and corrupt bunch they are – I'm sure none of the contributors to this thread, for example, are particularly surprised at what what's being alleged.

On a technical level, our bid was very strong – although there were still a number of issues which would need to be addressed – but there's a huge amount of politics behind these decisions and from that point of view we were always going to struggle.

FIFA needs to be far more transparent, but the only people who can affect such changes are those within the organisation itself – and they're doing very nicely out of it at the moment, thank you very much.

Spot on. Idealistic, but some sort of breakaway or even serious threat of a breakaway is really needed. Sepp Blatter and FIFA in general are useless, football would be better without them.

Back to something positive... I can think of one or two.... :D

Head and shoulders the best player in the team currently this season. Amazing form. Henry was in the stands watching too which just makes it that much sweeter.

Newcastle United have 'parted company' with Chris Hughton – according to a statement on their website, the club are looking for 'an individual with more managerial experience' to 'take the club forward'.

Hughton, let's not forget, got the club back in order after its relegation from the Premier League and got them back into the top flight at the first time of asking – they're currently a very respectable 11th in the table, but clearly this doesn't seem to be good enough.

Bloody ridiculous. Absolutely bloody ridiculous.

Di Matteo is currently being regarded as doing an exceptional job with West Brom, with Newcastle a colossal 3 points behind, so I guess it was inevitable

What a complete joke. Ashley seems to be completely and utterly deluded. Was he expecting Newcastle to be challenging for CL places or something?

Not half!

I think he's desperate to get them up near the top so he can try and sell the club without losing too much money. The bloke's an idiot.

Surely any promoted club's No.1 priority in it's first season is survival? Not only do Newcastle look like they'll survive, they look(ed) a good mid table team, with a great manager and fantastic team spirit. Carroll seems to be getting over his demons and now has an England cap, which I expect he'll add to, Nolan seems to be rejuvenated and Barton hasn't assualted anyone (seriously) in quite a while. Not only that, he's actually playing well!

The guy just doesn't know how to stay out of trouble. This has 'bad idea' written all over it, just when momentum was starting to build too. What a plonker.

Considering how tenuous Ashley's relationship with the fans is, I think he's taking a massive risk. Hughton seems popular with the players and appears to be a good man-manager. I hope they bring back Keegan or Shearer (or both), that would be too entertaining.

Seriously though, if Ashely could be fired, this move would be grounds for just such an action.

It would be a complete farce for Newcastle, but for the rest of us it would be highly entertaining.

Hughton built a solid reputation in my opinion, his replacement is going to be under a lot of pressure and anything other than a big improvement in results will be seen as a failure by the fans. Especially if players like Carroll and Barton relapse into their former habits.
