I'm assuming everyone here who's got a replacement had troubles with their machines, right?

If nothing goes wrong with the machine, I can't replace it, right?

correct. replacements only happen when an mbp with applecare has had an abnormally long repair history/chronic problem that cant be fixed. the 07 Santa Rosa's seem to be frequent culprits.

Just thought id give my experience...i had a late 2008 13 inch base...

the replacement they offered me is a new regular macbook with the white body. I simply told them the main reason i bought the macbook is the alumnium body, and they gave me a current model base 13 MBP instead. Didnt need to ask for anymore then that, as its wayyy better then what my original model

Still waiting on mine

Have tourblesome Santa Rosian MBO 2.4GHz circa late 07. I was granted the replacement and ordered the replacement machine with upgrade on the day it came out.

I am still waiting on the tracking number... but looking forward to it coming especially since last I bought the machine I missed the new model by one week.

Which model did they give you?

Base model

Initially offered the midrange 2.66 or sth of previous gen then I told them I want to wait to which said okay. When the new one came out, I was offered baseline model so I elected to upgrade to 2.66 top end one but had to cough up 600AUD ish but should be little less after refund for Apple Care(hopefully...). I am thinking may be I should have upgraded to the mid-range but I really want to try 512MB VRAM:D

So short answer: I got top range but with 600 extra but not complaining(esp with free upgrade to hi-res screen)

How you got the free upgrade to hi-res? Is it because your previous MBP is of matte screen (with silver bezel) as well?

But I have paid £100 for the hi-res upgrade, I didn't know it should be FREE! =(

Any chance of getting refund for it? The stupid lady in Apple Store didn't know a ****in damn thing about mac replacement policy!
What she knows is only charging me more and more!:mad::mad:

Time to get the money back from Apple I guess??
Have you got your machine yet? cause I have been charged 600 but have not got machine just yet. If you have not got your machine yet, probably you still have some time to correct this situation:cool:

Do you think it would be better for me to argue over it once I got the machine in the Apple Store? Or it is better to tell the lady about it now rather than later?

P/S: Waiting for MBP thread Here ;)

Apple always replaces with *new* current generation models based on the specs of your current machine. Also, I have never heard of someone being refused the ability to upgrade at the cost of difference in models, and sometimes a model upgrade is offered as a gesture of goodwill.

I used to work in Apple Sales and CS.

Exception to that one, in Europe any way is where refurbs are concerned. I had the base 2.4 15" late 2008 model.

Had a really bad repair situation happen, so I asked for a replacement as I wasn't happy to get it repaired again, and I was told by Apple CS that as it was a refurb they would only replace if they had the same model in stock, which they didn't. So they gave me a refund instead, I said I was willing to pay the difference to get a better model as a replacement, but was told they couldn't do that, I'd have to take the refund and then buy a new one.

This was December last year and the reason I got locked into the waiting for Arrandale mess.

Did you mean that they actually did a refund for your MBP and asking you to buy a new one? Is that even possible? How much did they refund - according to the price you paid for it the last few decades?

Ah it's the old "can I scam a better and newer computer without paying for it" trick. They will send you a computer that's less powerful... I would anyway because it's ironic your wanting a replacment right in the time of a model refresh. They will send you what you paid for... exactly. Funny, I have owned about 30 macs and only one out of 30 was bad and actually had to be replaced. I think your scamming a newer box because why would you be here trying to question the world? You'll get what you paid for. They'll pull some old parts out and put one together.

Yup, they did a full refund rather than an exchange, was refunded the full price I paid for it, and was debited back into my bank account.

Great idea, I will try my luck tomorrow. Thanks for the advice! :)

NP dude, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Oh, really! That is a great news for me because the MBP was the most expensive the time I bought mine. But by looking at the money-minded Apple Store rep, I have slim chance of getting refunded. I shall speak to the member of CS tomorrow for further advice.

However, I heard that you need to speak to those with higher rank/tier in order to due with these kind of problems, right? Any opinion?

Eh? Why is that? I thought Apple always used the current generation as the replacement units?

Look in Apple's refurb store. They still have plenty of the previous generation of models. That is what will get shipped back.

Yeah good luck! I think you have a good chance.
Personally I think they tend to 'downgrade' the Apple Store staff after awhile... Apple Care (phone) seems to be more knowledgeable about Apple stuff.

not true, i have tried many times to get a refurb model and they pushed current models on me.

they specifically told me if i bought a unit and they agree to replace it, it has to be a new unit of the same spec and cannot come from the refurb store.

I have the late 2008 13" unibody model - if I were to get this replaced on applecare, what would I be expecting as a replacement?

*prays for a 13" pro, not the unibody...*

Wow- it's really hard for someone who lost work repeatedly because of a **** 8600M GT and had to get 3 different logic boards (and be told it needed a 4th after #3 failed) on a $3000 machine to not just reply to this with a big **** you.

I wanted a NON-DEFECTIVE GPU in my Mac - no "scam" for a better computer, I just wanted one without that crap GPU.

I can't help it that Apple uses ONE graphics card in the MBP and I can't help that nVidia made ****** GPUs for 2 years - yet from what you're saying because you've never bought a defective one I "scammed" a new computer.

Careful up there on your moral high horse - it could hurt when you get knocked off...

BTW - they didn't grab whatever they had laying around - I bought the top spec 15" when I bought it, I got the top spec 15" to replace it. Brand new. That's not what I've been told or promised - I'm posting from it now. Done.

When it happened to me it was all through the initial CS agent I spoke to, looked like it was going to get replaced then a different department (can't remember which one), pointed out to the agent that it had to be a refund due to it being a non stock refurb. Never asked to speak to anyone higher up.

Certainly reckon you'll get better service from CS than in store.
