I have the new 6-core, 16GB ram (2x8GB) and 5870 card. My monitor is a 30" Dell WFP-HC with dual-link. Randomly, I get a noisy screen (snow) that can only be fixed by shutting the screen off and back on, or unplugging.

I have had that symptom with a 2009 mac mini hooked up to a 720p hdtv via hmdi/ hdmi-dvi adapter. a wiggle of the line/cable has sent it packing. There is a chance you have a defective cable. or a defective connection right at the jack of the screen.

my 2009 mp has had this issue on the gt120 since I got it march 09. Called apple they said it was a driver issue that would be fixed in the next update... never was, still waiting for that fix. Seems like the mp isn't the only one effected as I've seen the same issue being reported in the mbp forums on the 330. Maybe it's time to call again.....

The hot-corners trick works. Just set one of your corners (in Screen Saver settings) to sleep the display. When you get the snow, activate your hot corner, then wake the display.

I don't think we're all having cable issues. Mine definitely isn't cable-related, because I swapped in a known working one.

I should have included more information. The 30" dual-link DVI screen works without issue on my previous mac pro, the 1,1 model from 2006. Same cable, same monitor. AOK It must be the new mac pro from the DVI output inward.

I also have a 20" non-dual-link DVI LCD. That monitor on the new system does NOT exhibit the noise issue. This means it's specifically a dual-link issue.

I have the same Mac Pro configuration as seanhoytphoto. I also have two Dell 2408WFP and of course i get the *snow* randomly. I tried a few things:

1. bought another Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter - same problem / adapter was fine. (i got my money back)

2. switched the Mini Display Ports but same issue on both.

3. hooked up my other Display with the second adapter to the other Mini Display Port so both running over the Display Ports. I switched the Port of my primary Display to Mini Port 2 and the secondary to Port 1. Same issue on the PRIMARY Screen so no matter which Mini Display Port i use its always the Primary Display that comes up with this snow image never that one which is configured as secondary. That's very interesting.

4. I bought a Display Port to Mini Display Port Cable and plugged in to the Display Port input of my Dell. I was thinking a direct connection from Display Port to Display Port maybe resolves the issue but it was even worse. No snow image but it only worked if the Mac Pro was up and running... with this cable attached there was no image after restarting the Mac the Screen was just black (in power safe mode). Reset the PRAM had no effect it seems this connection type doesn't work well for my Dell.

So i have no Idea what to do... maybe i getting an Apple Display and hoping it's working just perfect with it. The Mac Pro is brand new and only one week old... very frustrating
