Oh. OK, you've an excuse then... :D :p

Maybe a used system if you can inspect it prior to purchase (ideally still has Apple Care on it), otherwise you're likely left with no choice but to get an '09 Quad, preferably from the refurb store as well.

It's upsetting because I just sold the '09, hoping to get a better deal in the '10's. We will wait until Wednesday, but if there is not an update then I will have to look into the '08 2.8 GHz or the '09 Quad (ugh) :(

It's not that far off, so you'll be able to figure out what you need to do soon enough. :)

If I can pick up an '06 on the cheap, I could use that until updates and then sell it
A PITA at best (sell, wait for funds to clear, then order a new system), a financial loss being possible as well.

Given the limited budget and what you're doing, an '08 would be the best solution IMO. They're not slouches by any means, are less expensive to purchase, and will be upgradable for some time yet. Upgrades are easier and less expensive too (perhaps save 800MHz FB-DIMM's, which aren't awful anyway).

Yeah, but which one could I afford? Even the 2.8 GHz models seem to be going at or around my price range, and I was hoping (with buying a used model) to at least get some money remaining for RAM/GPU upgrade =/

Nano,

I know you can't say for sure when the 10s will be out, but I think I recall you guessing they could come out in January?

Do you still believe there's such a possibility that we might see the 10s arrive this Wednesday? If not, do you think February is more likely than a march release?

Sorry man, I'm dying here. I need some reassurances :(

08 MP vs. 09 MP vs. 10 MP

So if nothing is announced Wed on a 2010 MP, for sure they'll be announced or out by March right? Is it worth it to wait till March or go for an 08 or 09 box?

From reading this thread, sounds like a lot of you prefer the 08 MP over any of the 09 MP, wondering why this is? If this is the case, what do you all think of this deal that is being offered to me from a friend of a friend who is selling his MacPro3,1 that he has upgraded well...check out these specs:

MacPro and 30" ACD - $3300
MacPro3,1: 2008
Processor: 8 Cores - 2 X 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeons
RAM: 16GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Display: Apple 30" Cinema Display - NO dead pixels
Hard Disks:
128 G.Skill Falcon SSD for the system drive
2 X 1TB HDD for storage
Added extra: Apple Magic Mouse, Wireless Keyboard

Would you take this offer and not have any second thoughts about an 09 or 10 MP?
Main uses will be photo editing with LightRoom2 and Photoshop, and Video Editing with FCP.

take the deal; even if a new system comes out it would be easy for you to make $500 profit or so selling that setup :) (sorry, still thinking in craigslist terms)

So you think this setup is solid? He's also added two Sonnet Allegro cards, which have 4 USB slots each, I think that sweetens the deal; gives the box around 13 USB 2.0 slots.

The only thing not included is Apple Care, the didn't buy it, as he's a techy and figured he'd just fix any issues it might have. I asked him if he had any random logical board issues, and he said no, its been a perfect machine. He just decided to migrate to PC and has a monster Windows 7 machine.

I just feel odd buying something two years old, especially if something new is soon to be annouced. But this deal comes with the 30" ACD...trying to figure out what a new machine with all the same setup would cost me new...probably around $6500?

The SSD system disc setup is a sweet deal too.

yeah, the setup is worth it simply because of the resale value. It all depends on if you are the kind of person to be happy with a two year-old computer

Well, I'm on a 5 year old, maybe 5+ year old Dell Workstation right now, its crap, loud, slow, clunky, and needs to go...I just want to be on a Mac!

If the performance is close or comparable to an 09, I could live with it being an 08...he said the OS boots up in 7-10 seconds on that SSD!

Wasn't Wednesday all about mobility? "The New MacPro - comes with wheels" :D

Not saying nothing will happen, but the only reason to be "excited" is that Apple (IIRC) dropped the Nehalem processors out of nowhere. Personally I think we'll have to wait a little while longer for Gulftown (will eat words if wrong). However, I admit, it would be pretty simple to implement what Nanofrog suggested in a short amount of time.

Step 1: Update microode
Step 2: Insert 6-core CPUs
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit!

I sold my Power Mac G5 this summer and have been getting along on my laptop, swapping out all my hard drives via an external. I really hope the prices don't go up too much as I don't have a job. A desktop would be really nice for the 3D rendering stuff I do, not to mention gaming.

There are only two refurbed 09's in the Apple Store right now, that I see, $3200 and $3900 for them both respectively. I can get this 08, with the upgrades and that 30" monitor for $3300...it seems almost too good to be true.

There are cheaper ways to fry your eggs while listening to music.

Personally, I doubt there's going to be a Mac Pro update tomorrow. Apple will be content with Arrandale laptop, tablet, iLife and iPhone OS 4.0 for one day. Throw in the fact that Gulftown isn't even out yet, and I think we won't be seeing a refresh until Marc at the earliest.

Oh yeah sorry I didn't imply you should know I was from New Zealand. Just sucks we don't have the numbers to get a solid pool of refurbed Mac Pros available!

So if you were in my situation, would you pull the trigger on an 09?

well, i am in your situation, only living in Europe.
refurbs are impossible to get here.. so yes, i'm waiting for the 2010 mac.
