Good input from all. Went to local Apple store last night and guy (who seemed knowledgeable compared to most of the folks in the stores and wouldn't say much) did tell me to come back on the 27th and talk again about Mac Pro....hmmmmm

Need to figure out what to do as my Dell is dying a slow death and I'm finally giving up the ghost on Windows (good riddance!)

actually was ready to pull the trigger and he -- in so many words -- convinced me not to... Either he's honest or a bad salesman!:D

He may not know anything more than we do. It's not exactly a smart idea to buy a new Mac the day before a a press conference.

No, even if you are certain it won't be updated it seems a little silly. As has been mentioned retail workers know as much as we do on here, at most.

my friend work for intel. he told me that intel still work on 32nm 6 core chip processor...cuz having problem with heating and high power consuming.

Yeah, but which one could I afford? Even the 2.8 GHz models seem to be going at or around my price range, and I was hoping (with buying a used model) to at least get some money remaining for RAM/GPU upgrade =/
An '08 may be hard to get a good deal on, but be patient. They do show up from time to time, and you have to leap fast. I'd recommend getting one that can be inspected prior to payment, to be sure it's not DOA (local, as fleaBay can be dangerous).

Nano,

I know you can't say for sure when the 10s will be out, but I think I recall you guessing they could come out in January?

Do you still believe there's such a possibility that we might see the 10s arrive this Wednesday? If not, do you think February is more likely than a march release?

Sorry man, I'm dying here. I need some reassurances :(
I doubt there will be an announcement tomorrow, as the information available indicates it's for portable devices. MP's though have handles, don't really qualifiy. Maybe if you had a wheeled case of some sort equiped with batteries and a power inverter system, it might. :p

Seriously, assuming Apple has made arrangements with Intel to get parts early, it's likely they're just now getting their hands on them. Then figure in a standard lead time of 13 wks before they can ship (assemble, accrue some stock, then ship). So March or April are more realistic for users actually getting their hands on a 2010 model IMO.

Everyone keeps talking about how tomorrow is about portable, but you're all forgetting the "creation" if tomorrow is all about ways to create, then why wouldn't a MP update be in that, I mean the MP is only the best way to create on a MAC.
Before you flame, yes I still know the chances are low. But also a MP update wouldn't really constitute much fanfare anyway, so a quick "Hey we are updating the Mac Pros" is possible.
I'm just keeping my fingers cross, cause the waiting to upgrade is killing me

Hmm... Bunch of anxious people around here... :D :p

I feel as though we can't assume that Intel hasn't been producing the Gufltown (at least in limited quantities) to fulfill an exclusivity deal with Apple. An announcement could happen tomorrow, followed by a shipment in February (a month prior to chip release, emulating the last MP refresh)

Its about time it got a new design, heck this thing is from the G5 days and the new iMac is just as good. Apple really needs a new POWERMAC and and a Consumer tower to fill the void between Mini and Macpro.

Scheduling is tight. Once final verification is complete (process testing for example, as design verification should have been completed already, assuming there's not been problems), they start manufacturing. Parts aren't going to sit in a warehouse for very long either. Just until the quantity is large enough to fill the shipment quantity. As soon as that's done and they're loaded into the shipping containers, they're out the door.

In simple terms, they want to get paid, and that doesn't happen with vapor parts. They have to ship a working product, so they're in a hurry to get everything sorted, get the fab running, and the parts out the door. Lead times are typically 13wks for a reason. That's the time needed to get them manufactured in sufficient quantity to ship, and then have the parts delivered to their buyers.

Well, so much for Mac Pro updates. Disappointment abound today, as I'm also underwhelmed by the iPad :(

Looks like it will have to be the '08, at least for now

Yeah thinking 09 in the next couple of days. Problem is it could take up to a month to reach me. Would hate for an update to happen in that period.

The '08's are NOT a disappointment. Seriously. They hold their own next to the '09's in general, and offer a better value. Some models are even faster than their similar priced counterparts. That's saying something. :D

Take a look at the '08 models before leaping, as you could get a better deal. Especially if you're looking at the base '09 Octad (2.26GHz). The 3.2GHz '08 Octad is faster in both single and multi-threaded applications for the same $$$ (here), and it's easier to perform upgrades, especially RAID (hardware or software).

There's also fewer technical issues as well, some can be gotten around, but are a bit pricey. Others, have no solutions as of yet (example).

Just bought a temporary '06 (much to my dismay) in hopes of either buying an updated one or waiting for '08 prices to come down a bit more.
What will you be using it for in the immediate future?

(Clarification might help, as it could last you longer than you think, depending on what you're doing). 3D work, it will be limited in the very near future (i.e. HD4870 is the current best card possible), but it's going to be great for PS for awhile, given the software can't use more than 2 cores right now. No idea when that will change, but it doesn't seem immediate, given the tumultuous relationship between Apple and Adobe.

Thanks for your response.

Yeah its this damn audio issue that's stopping me. TradeMe (New Zealand's auction hub) has no 08s on offer. Quick google search results in nothing. Only real option is an 09.

 NP. :)

I recall you stated the NZ refurb store didn't have them, but I was hoping you could locate a used system. :( I actually checked prior to posting this, and didn't see any MP's at all, thinking there could be one pop up on occasion so worth checking often.

You'll have to be patient, as they should pop up from time to time somewhere (and go really quickly everywhere else, so I'd presume the same there), assuming waiting is an option. Otherwise, it's an '09, which really isn't worth it IMO. Just too much proprietization (i.e. expensive adapters for 3rd party RAID on the HDD bays), technical issues (other issues such as flaky PCIe eSATA cards), and high cost (loss of value found in earlier MP's). All in all, a poor mix. :(

You're definitely in a tough spot. :(

I guess if I'm looking at an 09 Quad, I'm already tossing value out the window. Didn't want an iMac, purchased my monitors now I just want a reliable Mac Pro to get my work done.

So if we take money out of the equation (I can only just afford an 09 Quad) and just look at the machine that will meet needs for photoshop and video editing for the next 4 years, hows it look?

Will this audio problem prematurely fry the CPU? I don't want to be listening to music while working with the guilt of knowing its the equivalent of feeding cigarettes to an athlete during a triathlon.

That's uncertain. Just make sure you buy AppleCare for that machine. Might become pretty useful in a few years... :)

I agree with this 1,000,000% over!!

There are plenty of people that need the scalability of a tower, but don't need 16GB of RAM & 8-12 cores!

Give me a dual or a quad of ~2.8Ghz, 4-8GB of RAM, room for 4 HDDs, 4-6 USB ports, Dual DVI w/ a decent video card, and with two optical drives. And I'm set!!

This type of a set up shouldn't have to cost me $3k??? WTF? I'm ready to plunk down $3k for a PM '08-'10 or whatever, but it will be somewhat overkill.

I don't render 3D or compile C++. But I do use PS, LR, and work with fairly large files.

Come on Apple don't leave us behind for your beloved iPxxxs (you fill in the xxx's)

/rant over.
