As I'm new to Mac, I have no idea if what I just experienced was a freeze.
I was watching the new episode of The Mentalist in VLC and suddenly my screen froze, however the sound continued to run, and I could move around the mouse. Using the keyboard and clicking on the mouse, didn't work.
And I don't really know any keyboard shortcuts to either force quit application or open up activity monitor, so I had no other choice than to shutdown my MacBook Pro with the power button.

Is this one of those freeze issues, that is discussed in this thread? Or was it just VLC acting all fancy?

Yes that was a total freeze everyone is talking about. It's not the app.

This is just sad. My MBP just froze about half an hour ago. It's about the 7th or 8th time, just today. I had experienced this issue right out of the box about 8 days ago, but it did not concern me at the time, since I thought a software update addressing this was about to be released.
Tried disabling auto gpu switching, but no good, same thing. Mouse/trackpad and keyboard unresponsive, screen gets static, won't go to sleep with closed lid, even the SuperDrive disc-loading mechanism stops. In my case it seems to happen more often under battery usage, but it happened when AC was plugged as well.
Could it be a faulty batch? Just hoping it can be solved by software, since tech support here is virtually none...

I can FINALLY close my case (20-25 sec. beach balls) with a successful solution:
My APR has replaced my logic board and I just got it back.
Afterwards I tried EVERYTHING to make it freeze again, but I couldn't :D.

I have had multiple crashes today in OS X and Windows in Boot Camp. During a presentation at work. Now I am officially very, very angry. Apple's quality has dropped to Dell's or worse at this point in my mind.

I'm going to be expecting a fix. SOON. As in yesterday. This is horsecrap. I don't feel bad about asking for a replacement at all now. If the next one suffers this I'll have to downgrade to a MacBook but I already bought a 15" hard case. I will expect Apple to pay for that. And/or throw in a free upgrade or something.

On one crash on XP it was weird...One crash actually Windows didn't fully crash-- a dialogue came up saying the NVIDIA driver failed at something, and the screen went to a low resolution and small number of colors (4-bit). I was able to save work but upon selecting restart it Blue Screened. All others are the typical freeze of input and screen.

Folks if you think this thread is getting long, check out the one at Apple Support!!!:eek::eek:

Hopefully you don't experience freezing again, but I have my doubts on the majority of cases being a logic board issue. I think it's software / firmware issue.

Yeah, Apple drivers really suck. As of 10.5.8, I am still getting hard freezes when using Front Row and its stupid screen saving opengl efect (when the song name is long). It works fine in 10.6.3. I don't trust Apple, software quality is really low. So I am going to upgrade to SL when Leopard doesn't get more security upgrades. Come on Apple, spend some $ and get a decent QA team!

Did Apple ever say something if this with the freezes is a software problem? I wonder if it happens to everyone. The funny thing is I experienced only two freezes when I was transferring from my external PC hard disk (Seagate) while I kept on working in iphoto. Since then I absolutely had no more freezes. Even not with my new external Mac hard disk for my Backups. So was I just lucky or does it only affect some MBP?

Well I don't know if it's hardware or software. Has Apple officially responded to this? Or are they stonewalling as usual. It's ********--why don't they at least acknowledge it and say they're looking in to it. Sure not a huge banner in stores. They have to sell crap. But they should at least put a post in on that long thread on their OWN forum. Pff. At this rate, I may end up getting a PC with Windows 8. Seriously. This crap just isn't worth it. I'm too busy. I was so excited this round. Now..I'm on the verge of switching. To a PC.

I shall tell you my woes: I have a 2010 15' Macbook Pro, low end model, high-res anti-glare screen.

Every time I insert an Audio CD into the Superdrive, iTunes tries reading it. This goes on for an indefinitely long time, during which the application stops responding. I force-quit iTunes. I try to reopen iTunes, but it does not let me, saying that the library has been locked. As soon as I dismiss the error message, the computer as a whole locks up. I try force quitting Finder, and it quits but will not re-open. I try logging out, at which point the computer completely freezes and I need to do a hard restart by holding the power button. When I restart, it automatically recognizes the Audio CD and works fine.

This long process happens identically /every time/ I insert an Audio CD, whether or not iTunes was already open or just opening because of the CD.

By the principle of sufficient reason, there must be some explanation for this weird behavior. Does anyone know what it could be?

I just experienced a freeze on my brand new 2.66 i7 Macbook Pro. Only had it for four days and this is the first time it's happened. Only programs running were Safari and Skype.

Not sure if it's the same kind of freeze mentioned here though, because I was not able to move the mouse cursor using either my USB mouse of the trackpad.

I also did not wait 10 minutes for everything to go back to normal (did not know you could do that).

Do these freezes leave any evidence in the system logs anywhere?

I've had my low end MBP 13 2010 for about a month now, and so far it freezed on me about 5 times. When I tried closing the lid while it was frozen, the apple light still remained on, and the keyboard/trackpad wouldn't work. I had to hold the power button down to turn it off. The freezing just happens randomly, like when I'm using safari or on dashboard. It also happened when I was on iWork... I've also been having many random "beachball/pinwheels" which pause the laptop for like 10-20 seconds at a time, and safari crashes where it just closes it altogether. This is my first mac, and I'm kind of disapointed with all these crashes. Should I email Apple? Have they done anything for anyone else with these problems? I really don't feel like driving 45 minutes to an Apple store, or having to part with my laptop for a week or so for repairs. :| Everything else is fine though, besides the freezing/crashing.

Macbook affected too?

Is this problem only limited to Macbook Pro's or does the new 13" Macbook experience this issue too?

s15" i5 5400

had the same problem would freeze randomly. brought back to apple store and they thought i was a bad sector on the disk even though the logs said something about nvram and video card. got back the so called repaired mbp and freezes still happened. went back to apple store and got a brand new replacement so far no problems now on the new mbp but i did disable the energy saver auto graph switching...

I also have an 15" i7 with intel ssd (my home laptop) which I watch much more videos on vs. my work one and never once had a freeze.

I truly believe its a bad batch of logic boards or nvidia parts.

I've had my 15" i5 for 30 days now. I use it about 10-12 hours a day, most of the time connected to an external monitor or proyector. It runs on AC, or battery with the dynamic switching enabled, I run windows 7 via Fusion 3, and do a lot of video editing and never had a single freeze.

How can it be a total freeze if the audio is still running ?

it's definitely not a total freeze. i've had the "freeze" happen to mine one time. i was converting a blu-ray rip with handbrake while transferring another large blu-ray iso from my desktop (which has the blu-ray drive) to the mbp. all of a sudden i had no control over the mouse or keyboard and the screen showed no signs of movement. i kept trying keyboard shortcuts and was about to do a hard restart until i remembered i could check my desktop pc that was transferring the file over ftp in the other room. i checked it and data was still transferring at a good pace. i decided to wait it out and about 2-3 minutes later, it unfroze and i saw a few of my keyboard shortcuts go through (apple-tab and such).

in any case, it did not mess up the handbrake conversion or the ftp file transfer. i think that's important to note. it hasn't happened since.

I have been trying everything with my 2.4 i5, particularly with video, youtube, ect... It seems that everything is running really great with no freezing issues. I just had one freeze when I initially created my user account during the first boot up, but that was on battery power and I have been running it on AC power since. I also reinstalled OS X just incase, and setup was fine that time. I'm just nervous about running it on battery power again as well as activating automatic graphics switching until the update(s) are rolled out.

People are reporting a freezing issue with other models besides i5/7 so I think there's a good chance of it being a software / firmware issue. I just don't know why most people are having issues with the i7 though.

Because of the new processors and Apple releasing the new MBP's and 10.6.3 at about the same time we aren't going to be able to find out for sure if that will fix things untill an OS update is out. Apple should be focusing 100% on this if it truly requires a software / firmware update or they are going to be faced with a lot of returns.

All,
as I posted also on apple site forum, I am really interested into knowing whether or not the replacement (latest) provided by apple (mainly the cto coming right now from china) have addressed the freezing issue to some of you.
I had the freezing once up to now (when wanting to import an avchd file into imovie, just when I had to select on which HDD record the file) but without using intensively the mbp; apple are ready to replace it.
I really hesitate because, if it is a hw problem, did apple have the time to fix it already in latest machines? If it is a sw problem the replacement would be useless. What do you think? Please advise. I am not the kind of person playing back and forth with apple mainly bcause of false HW problems....
Ciao
ps i called apple usa, from france, and they told me that they are not familiar to this freezing problem....bs!!!!
